  • Australian States Impose Travel Ban As Sydney Records Spike In Cases

As the COVID-19 pandemic still continues to hinder lives across the world, Australian states have started imposing entry bans on Sydney residents as the novel coronavirus outbreak spreads in the largest city of the island nation. With Christmas season just around the corner, the holiday pans have been dashed by the border closures outside New South Walles (NSW) with even airlines cancelling several flights leaving the Sydney Airport on December 21 after the midnight deadline.

As per reports, the city has recorded at least 83 cases till now in the outbreak and all are linked to Sydney’s Northern Beaches region. In the wake of the situation, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on December 21 that “2020 is not done with us yet”. Speaking from Canberra, Morrison called the recent events in the country “incredibly frustrating and disappointing” for people across the nation who were looking forward to get-togethers and inter-state travel.

  • Who did Lionel Messi vote for at the FIFA The Best Awards

Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski was crowned the Best Men’s Player for 2020 at the FIFA awards on Thursday, finishing ahead of both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi after a stellar season.

It’s no surprise to see Lewandowski scoop the prize after a phenomenal season where he won the treble and scored an incredible 55 goals in 47 games for the Bavarian giants.

Messi did vote for Lewandowski but only had the striker down in third place. The Barcelona captain voted former team-mate Neymar as his No. 1 choice with Kylian Mbappe his second favorite ahead of Lewandowski.

Lewandowski voted for Thiago, Neymar and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, while Ronaldo went for Lewandowski, Messi and Mbappe.

Messi was named in the FIFPro World XI, for the 14th year in a row, taking his place in a team containing Lewandowski, Ronaldo, Thiago and Sergio Ramos among others

  • Dhananjaya Lakshan’s all-round show puts Galle in final

Three wins, six losses, LPL finalists. The Galle Gladiators are the first team to qualify for the final of the Lanka Premier League, coming out victors in a semi-final that at points seemingly neither side wanted to win.

Indeed, a two wicket win with one ball remaining barely begins to tell the story of a game that was largely dominated by the ball, but will undoubtedly be remembered for some incredibly sloppy moments in the field from both sides. The Gladiators to be sure will know they have got away with one.

In a truly Jekyll and Hyde performance, the Gladiators were exemplary with the ball; the pace trio of Mohammed Amir, Nuwan Thushara and Dhananjaya Lakshan, gave away just 80 runs in their 12 overs, picking up four wickets, which allowed Lakshan Sandakan to scalp the critical wickets of Angelo Mathews, Andre Russell, and Ashan Priyanjan.

At no point in the Kings’ innings were the batsmen allowed a breather – except for Daniel Bell-Drummond, who was dropped thrice and survived a run out scare on the way to a 53-ball 70 – as they were held to a sub-par 150 for 9.

But with the bat, the Gladiators showed the Kings more than enough opportunities to steal the win, all of which they somehow managed to squander. That the Kings got there without the bowling chops of Russell (who slipped in the dressing room and didn’t take the field) and Mathews (who pulled a hamstring midway through his spell), illustrates how difficult the Gladiators made life for themselves.

  • Cristiano Ronaldo Scores 750th Career Goal, Says Next Stop 800

Star striker Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 750th career goal during Juventus’ 3-0 win over Dynamo Kyiv in the Champions League game.

Federico Chiesa opened the scoring in the first half, before goals from Ronaldo and Morata put the result beyond a doubt at the Allianz Stadium on Wednesday evening.

“750 goals, 750 happy moments, 750 smiles on the faces of our fans. Thanks to all the players and coaches who have helped me reach this incredible number, thanks to all my loyal opponents who have made me work harder and harder every day,” Ronaldo wrote in an Instagram post as he thanked coaches and fans.

  • 5 talking points as the London derby ends in a stalemate | Premier League 2020-21

In an incredibly cagey game in the 2020-21 Premier League at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur split points following a goalless draw.

The Blues went into the game in the knowledge that a win would take them to the top of the Premier League table, but instead, the stalemate took Tottenham Hotspur back to the summit on goal difference while Chelsea remain third.

Chances for both Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur were few and far between throughout the match, as the game had the air of a high-stakes chess contest rather than a swashbuckling affair. To tell the truth, a draw was probably the fair result.

Against Spurs, Chelsea took 13 shots but only managed three on target while Tottenham Hotspur had five attempts with one on target. Essentially, this was a game of half-chances, and neither side really came too close to scoring; Mason Mount’s long-range effort did draw a fine save from Hugo Lloris, though.

It raises a pertinent question: which side is the happier with a point? On the surface, one will have to say Tottenham Hotspur, as Jose Mourinho’s side moved back to the top of the Premier League table after being on the defensive for large swathes in the game.
