  • Suspects did detailed recce of Ghazipur flower market before planting improvised explosive device

    By ANI

NEW DELHI: Soon after the Delhi Police recovered an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) from the city’s Ghazipur flower market on Friday, the Special Cell said that the suspects had done a detailed recce of the spot where the explosive was recovered.

According to sources in the Special cell, the bag full of IED was kept near the gate of the flower market. Its detailed recce had been done by the suspects. If the bag had been kept inside the gate, it could have been captured in the CCTV camera. The bag was kept on the ground. The police had received a call after which the team had been alerted.

A man named Anupam had informed the control room about the presence of an unattended bag at 10.19 am on Friday. His scooter was parked at the place where the explosive was planted.

The special cell sources further said that two CCTV cameras are installed at the gate of the market and the police are exploring them along with the cameras installed in the nearby areas to find the clue of the suspect.

“There are two CCTV cameras installed at the gate of the flower market. However, none of the cameras could capture the act of placing the bag at the spot. One camera is fitted on the inside and the other on the outside. There were possibilities of finding the footage of the incident on the CCTV on the outside,” the sources said.

“But the camera has been placed in such a way that it captures the number plate of the vehicles entering the market. So, the police could not find any clue from the footage. The Delhi Police is also looking into the CCTV camera footage of the nearby locations to find a clue of the suspect,” added the sources.

Minutes after the incident, the Delhi Police said, “A case has been registered in the Delhi Police Special Cell under provisions of the Explosive Substances Act.”

Sensing the severity of the matter, NSG commandos were sent. Later, NSG officials told ANI, “A bomb disposal squad of NSG has defused the IED recovered from Ghazipur. Samples of the IED have been collected and the NSG team will later submit a report of the chemical component used to assemble the explosive.”

Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana told ANI on phone, “Based on the information received, an IED has been recovered.”

Earlier today, a bomb disposal squad and fire engines were sent to control the situation after the information about an unattended bag was received, from which the IED was recovered. NSG commandos were sent. Later, NSG officials told ANI that the bomb disposal squad of NSG has defused the IED and the samples of the IED have been collected. The Bomb Disposal Squad of the NSG has shared with chief M.A. Ganapathy that prima facie, RDX and Ammonium Nitrate chemical compounds are suspected to have been used in the manufacturing of the approximately 3 kg IED.

  • Punjab Police recover ‘tiffin box bomb’ hidden in fields near India-Pakistan border

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police has said it foiled a possible attempt of a terror attack after it recovered an explosive-filled tiffin box hidden in an agricultural field near the Indo-Pak border in Ferozepur district on the eve of Diwali.

The recovery was made in Ali Ke village on Wednesday following interrogation of three people arrested earlier this week in connection with the Jalalabad blast case.

Director General of Police (DGP) Iqbal Preet Singh Sahota said the Ludhiana Rural police on Monday had arrested two persons for allegedly providing shelter and logistical support to Ranjeet Singh alias Gora, an accused in the Jalalabad blast case being investigated by the NIA.

The two people arrested were Jaswant Singh alias Shinda Baba, a resident of village Jhugge Nihanga Wale in Ferozepur, and Balwant Singh of village Walipur Khurd in Ludhiana. Ranjeet Singh alias Gora too has been arrested, the DGP said.

According to an official statement, one “tiffin bomb”, two pen drives and Rs 1.15 lakh in cash were recovered from the trio earlier.

During the course of investigation of the case, it came to light that the accused were in possession of another “tiffin bomb” which they had kept concealed in agriculture fields.

“Following revelations of the accused persons, a joint search operation was carried out by teams of Counter Intelligence (of Punjab Police), Ferozepur and Ludhiana and CIA (crime investigation agency) Jagraon at village Ali Ke in Ferozepur on Wednesday and the tiffin bomb was recovered,” the DGP said.

An FIR has been registered under relevant provisions of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) at Sidhwan Bet Police Station in Ludhiana Rural.

Additional Director General of Police (Internal Security) R N Dhoke said that further investigation in the case is on and more arrests are expected to be made soon.

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had on Monday conducted searches at four locations in Fazilka and Ferozepur districts of Punjab in connection with the explosion in a two-wheeler near a Punjab National Bank branch in Jalalabad of Fazilka.

Balwinder Singh alias Bindu of village Jhugge Nihanga Wale died in the motorcycle blast on September 15.

Tiffin bombs have also been recovered in Amritsar Rural, Kapurthala, Fazilka and Tarn Taran in the past few months.

The Punjab Police had earlier foiled a major terror attack attempt ahead of Independence Day after recovering a double-decker tiffin box bomb filled with improvised explosive device (IED) along the Indo-Pak border in Amritsar.

The police had then said 2-3 kg IED was packed into the tiffin box and it could have been delivered on the Indian side through a drone from Pakistan.

  • NH-44 in south Kashmir on Jaish, Lashkar target, suggest Intelligence inputs

    Express News Service

NEW DELHI:  Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) and Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), the two terror groups that have been working in coordination for some time, are planning to carry out a major attack in south Kashmir by “ripping the national highway to shreds” with a series of IED explosions, intelligence inputs suggest.

“There are threats of IED attacks on National Highway-44 from Qazigund to Khanabal axis in south Kashmir,” said a senior intelligence official, who refused to share more details. Although security forces have been taking precautions since the Pulwama attack in February 2019, in which 40 CRPF personnel were killed, the latest input has sent all security agencies in Kashmir into a tizzy. Sources told TNIE that an even greater vigil was being maintained, especially over the transport of personnel and ammunition.

According to highly placed sources, several inputs suggesting a “major attack” on the forces have been received since the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan on August 15. Anti-India terror groups such as JeM and LeT, along with outfits such as Hizbul Mujahideen and Al-Badr, which have been lying low over the past few months, have become highly active and collaborative, the intelligence inputs suggest. The JeM, founded by Masood Azhar, has carried out several dastardly attacks in India including the 2001 Parliament attack. There have been reports about Azhar meeting Taliban top leaders in Kandahar in the third week of August, seeking support for ‘India-centric operations’.

The Taliban and the JeM are believed to have been working in tandem for quite some time now and have expressed similar sentiments in interpreting Sharia. While LeT is the most active group in the Valley, the JeM, desperately trying to make an impact, has been focusing on consolidating its organisation network in south Kashmir, the official said.

Worryingly, Ministry of Home Affairs’ data accessed by The New Indian Express shows a total of 305 youths, including 272 from Kashmir, have gone missing this year. Security agencies believe at least 82 of them have joined terror groups, with 42 being recruited by LeT. More than 80 per cent of the new terror recruits belong to south Kashmir, which has been a hotbed of terrorism in Kashmir.

The traffic on the vital road remained suspended for over three hours after the detection of the IED by the Road Opening Party (ROP) of the security forces, they said.

The terrorists are believed to have planted the IED during the intervening night under the cover of darkness, the officials said, adding that a massive search operation is on to arrest the terrorists who were planning to set off the blast.

The officials said the experts removed the IED from the road to a secluded place in the nearby forest and later detonated it in a controlled explosion without causing any damage.

  • Villager guiding cops killed after IED planted by Maoists explodes in Jharkhand’s Gumla

    Express News Service
RANCHI: A day after a Combat Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) jawan was critically injured when an IED, planted by Maoists to prevent security forces from tracing them, exploded in the jungles of Marwa in Gumla, a villager was killed in a similar incident early on Wednesday. According to police, the villager was accompanying the security forces to guide them during a search operation being conducted to locate the Maoists when he stepped on an IED and was killed.

“A villager, Rameshwar Munda, got injured in the IED blast and was evacuated immediately from there, but succumbed to his injuries before he was taken to a doctor. Being a local, he was taken along by the security forces to guide them in the dense forests,” said Gumla SP Hurdeep P Janardhanan.

The squads of Maoist Zonal Commander Budheshwar Oraon and Ravindra Ganjhu have planted several IEDs in the Marwa jungles of Gumla and these often blow up when security forces are on search operations or when villagers go into the jungles to graze their animals.

This is the sixth such incident of a landmine blast within a year in the Marwa jungles.

In February this year, a CRPF jawan had lost both his legs in a similar blast while a villager Mahender Mahto also got seriously injured in another IED blast that occurred in the Marwa Karagani jungles under Kurumgarh police station in Gumla.

According to villagers, they have been warned by the Maoists not to enter the jungles as the land mines planted by them might explode claiming their lives or they may get critically injured. As per the message given to the villagers, the Maoists have planted hundreds of landmines in the jungles of Gumla to prevent the entry of security forces.

“The message was spread among the people in more than 40 small and big villages under Kurumgarh police station warning us to enter the jungles at our own risk as they have planted landmines there. Since then, we have not entered the jungles,” said a villager Budhan Munda. But it is very difficult to survive without the jungles as most of the day to day activities of the villagers are dependent on it, he added.

Admitting that a network of IEDs has been planted in the Marwa jungles, the Gumla SP said that regular operations are being conducted in the region to neutralise the IEDs and the Maoists as well. All efforts are being made to neutralise the squads of Budheshwar Oraon and Ravindra Ganjhu, which are active in the region, said the Jharkhand Police spokesperson.
