  • Heavy rains: Lucknow schools, higher educational institutions to remain closed on Tuesday

    LUCKNOW: With heavy rains lashing several parts of Uttar Pradesh, the Lucknow district administration has declared holiday for all schools and higher educational institutions on Tuesday.

    A statement issued by District Magistrate of Lucknow Suryapal Gangwar said that schools will remain closed on Tuesday.

    Citing a government order, the DM said all higher educational institutions will also remain closed on Tuesday.

    A state government official said higher educational institutions will remain closed in the districts where the authorities have declared holiday in view of heavy rains.

    Special Secretary, Higher Education Department, Manoj Kumar has said in an order sent to the Director of Higher Education and all the regional higher education officers that in view of the possibility of heavy rains in the state, District Magistrates of many districts have declared holidays in educational institutions and such orders issued by the district magistrates would also be applicable to higher educational institutions.

    Earlier on Sunday, the district authorities in Lucknow, Noida, Ghaziabad, Agra, Meerut, Aligarh, Mathura, Kanpur, Etah, Mainpuri and Firozabad had ordered closure of schools on Monday.

    Several parts of Uttar Pradesh continued to receive heavy rains on Monday.

    On December 29, Prince Harry and his wife Meghan released their first podcast for the holiday season in which they thanked the frontline workers and medics who battled the coronavirus pandemic in the forefront. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex released the 33-minute show titled ‘holiday special’ on Spotify as a part of a $US40million ($52.5m) project with the streaming service.

    In the podcast, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex reflect on the year of the mounting challenges and give encouraging messages of hopes for the new year ahead as they play tunes of Elton John. In an excerpt released by the admirable couple, Meghan uplifts the spirit of the people, saying, “From us, I’ll say no matter what life throws at you guys, trust us when we say, love, wins.” Harry adds, “Love always wins.” Further, the Duke of Sussex called 2020 “a year we could have never imagined.”

    According to CNN, Duke and Duchess of Sussex had scores of celebrities and artists ‘on mute’ on the show that later appeared to share stories about their struggles and hardships that they had overcome in the face of a very challenging year. Among the several notable artists was the author of the couple’s favourite book Notes on a Nervous Planet who came onboard the show and spoke to the listeners about the year 2020.

  • Winter holiday from 21 in the High Court, but the holiday has started today

    Chhattisgarh High Court will have a winter holiday from December 21 to 31. On Friday, Saturday and Sunday is a holiday with the holiday of Guru Ghasidas Jayanti. Due to this, functioning in the High Court will be closed from Friday itself.

    The judicial registrar of the High Court has declared a winter holiday from 21 to 31 December. During this time petitions can be filed in the Registrar General Office of the High Court. The registrar general office will also function during the winter vacation. Also, the vacation judges will also hear important matters. Special and urgent cases will be heard during the holiday. Immediate hearings and applications can also be made during winter vacation.

    The cases will be listed in the court on December 21 and earlier. A Division Bench may also be constituted in case of any urgent situation arising during the holiday period. On leave, Justice RCS Samanta will hear the cases as a vacation judge. Winter holiday has been declared in the High Court from Monday. But meanwhile, on Friday, there will be a holiday on Baba Gus Ghasidas Jayanti. After this, there will be a holiday on Saturday and Sunday also.

    Amid the resurgence of COVID-19 cases in the United States, nation’s Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is hosting indoor holiday parties inviting reportedly hundreds of guests to the Department in the upcoming weeks. Two State Department officials familiar with the planning of the events reportedly revealed the information despite the constant health warnings from the medical professionals calling for Americans to avoid large gatherings. However, reports of events in the State Department came just a week after the protocol office, that plans such gatherings, had to undergo deep cleaning due to potential case.

    As per CNN report, the US State Department has sent out over 900 invites for the events lined-up in mid-December while another 180 went out to foreign ambassadors in the United States. The media outlet cited its sources saying that the department officials are hosting a holiday reception at the State Department or Blair House that is close to White House. These events are almost every day over the next few weeks. Moreover, the sources reportedly said that US President Donald Trump’s hosting of events has motivated Pompeo to do the same.
