  • Government school in Himachal Pradesh closed as 15 students test COVID-19 positive

    SHIMLA: A government school in Himachal Pradesh’s Hamirpur district was closed after its 15 students tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, officials said.

    Overall 258 fresh coronavirus cases were reported in the state in the past 24 hours, they said.

    Government senior secondary school at Bara in Nadaun town of Hamirpur has been closed till further orders after fifteen students and one staff member were found COVID-19 positive, a health official said.

    Besides, seven jawans of the Indian Reserve Battalion, Jangel Beri (Sujanpur Tira) in Hamirpur district have tested coronavirus positive, he said.

    The jawans were told to remain in isolation, he added.

    One more person died of COVID-19 in the state on Saturday, taking the death toll to 3,718.

    The fresh death was reported from Mandi district.

    The 258 new cases pushed the total infection count to 2,22,569, a state health official said.

    As many as 163 more patients recovered from the infection in the past 24 hours, he said.

    The overall recoveries have reached 2,17,256, he added.

    The Covid active cases in the state as on Saturday was 1,578, the official said.

  • Himachal Pradesh CM Jai Ram Thakur expresses concern over rising COVID cases

    SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur on Monday expressed concern over rising coronavirus cases in the state.

    The number of active cases in the state rose to 2,086 on Monday, while the positivity rate was recorded at 1.9 per cent last week, a health official said.

    Thakur said the rise in numbers is a matter of concern and no one knows what type of situation will arise in the coming days.

    During a discussion in the state assembly on the Covid situation, Congress MLA from Kinnaur Jagat Singh Negi claimed that both the state and central government failed to properly handle the Covid pandemic.

    Negi said the prime minister should have got himself vaccinated first as the heads of several other foreign countries had done.

    At this, the chief minister intervened and took a strong exception to Negi’s statement.

    Thakur urged the opposition not to do politics on the pandemic.

    Several other legislators, including CPM MLA Rakesh Singha and Congress legislator Sukhvinder Sukhu, also participated in the discussion initiated by Congress MLA Inder Dutt Lakhanpal and BJP MLAs Bikram Singh Jaryal, Narinder Thkaur, Vinod Kumar and Kishori Lal.

    Meanwhile, samples of 88,887 people were tested last week, of whom 1,726 tested positive for Covid, the health official said, urging the public to follow Covid-appropriate behaviour.

  • Himachal Pradesh’s COVID-19 tally reaches 65,242, active count at 3,577

    SHIMLA: Himachal Pradesh registered 404 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, taking the cumulative count to 65,242, informed the state health department on Sunday.

    The active cases in the state have reached 3,577. As ten people succumbed to the virus in the last 24 hours, the COVID-19 death toll has mounted to 1,057.

    With 256 fresh recoveries, the total number of recoveries in the state now stands at 60,587.

    India reported 93,249 new COVID-19 cases and 513 coronavirus-related deaths in the last 24 hours, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday.

    The total number of COVID-19 cases in the country has reached 1,24,85,509. With 513 new deaths, the death toll in India has gone up to 1,64,623. There are 6,91,597 active cases in the nation as of now.
