Bangladesh braces for a critical verdict as a special tribunal is set to rule on charges against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, is reportedly seeking the death penalty for the 78-year-old politician, accusing her of orchestrating crimes against humanity during widespread anti-government protests last year. With the decision anticipated within 24 hours, national security forces have been placed on high alert, reflecting concerns over potential public unrest and nationwide instability. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) is expected to deliver its judgment concerning Hasina and several other former officials, including ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Charges range from murder to torture, stemming from the crackdown on the July 2023 student-led uprising that led to the downfall of Hasina’s Awami League government. While Kamal is also facing charges, Al-Mamun has reportedly become a state witness. The prosecution has explicitly called for the death penalty for Hasina, labeling her the ‘mastermind’ of the violent suppression. Supporters of the former premier maintain that the charges are politically motivated, designed to remove her from the political arena. The interim government’s request for Hasina’s extradition from India remains unanswered. The unfolding situation presents a tense and uncertain future for Bangladesh, with potential implications for regional dynamics.

Authorities have registered a First Information Report (FIR) under stringent anti-terror laws, including the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) and the Explosives Act, following a devastating blast near Delhi’s iconic Red Fort. The explosion, which occurred in a slow-moving car, has resulted in a significant number of casualties, with initial reports indicating at least 11 fatalities and 20 injuries. The national capital has been placed on high alert, with enhanced security measures implemented across critical locations such as airports, railway stations, and bus terminals. Law enforcement agencies are actively conducting searches at numerous sites as part of the ongoing investigation into this shocking incident. The FIR, filed at the Kotwali police station, specifically invokes Sections 16 and 18 of the UAPA, provisions dealing with punishment and conspiracy related to terrorist acts. This legal framework underscores the seriousness with which the incident is being treated, suggesting a potential terrorist motive. Investigations are progressing rapidly, with authorities exploring all possible angles, including the possibility of a suicide bombing. Eyewitness accounts describe a deafening explosion that reverberated across a wide area, causing widespread panic and disbelief. The vehicle involved, a Hyundai i20, reportedly had three occupants. The origin and ownership trail of the car are also a key focus of the probe, with police tracing its past owners across different cities. The blast caused extensive damage, with graphic images emerging from the scene depicting the severe impact of the explosion. Fire services responded swiftly to control the blaze, and the area has been cordoned off for forensic examination. Sources suggest the use of explosives like ammonia nitrate, fuel oil, and detonators, further intensifying the investigation into the technical aspects of the blast.

A high alert has been issued in 13 villages in a district of Chhattisgarh as the threat of elephants looms again. Forest officials have strongly advised villagers to stay indoors. The warning comes after reports of elephants roaming in the forests of the region. The alert has caused significant concern, especially for farmers who are currently busy with agricultural activities, particularly given the ongoing monsoon season.

According to the Forest Department, a herd of elephants has been roaming in the forests of Compartment numbers 155, 156, 126, and 127 of the Forest Development Corporation for the past three days. Forest Department teams are continuously monitoring the elephants’ movements.

The alert has been issued in villages including Chhatal, Talajhar, Murumdih, Daldali, Keshaldih, Sukulbay, Nandbaru, Amloor, Khirsali, Bandora, Raymuda, Jhakhmuda, Achanakpur, and Fuseradih. The Forest Department has appealed to the villagers in these areas not to venture into the forest, especially during the morning and evening hours.

The presence of elephants has doubled the concerns of farmers engaged in agriculture. With the rains, this is the time for planting and preparing fields, but due to the warning from the Forest Department, villagers are now afraid to go to their fields.

In Sukma district, Chhattisgarh, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Akash Rao Giripunje was martyred in an IED blast planted by Naxalites. The incident also left the SDOP and the station in-charge seriously injured. Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai expressed deep sorrow over the event, offering his condolences to the family of the martyred officer. He stated that the attack was deeply saddening and condemnable, and assured that the injured would receive proper medical care. CM Sai affirmed that a decisive battle is being fought against Naxalites in Chhattisgarh and that the security forces are continually achieving success, which is causing the Naxalites to resort to such cowardly acts. His loss is a significant blow to the Chhattisgarh police force, but this attack will not halt operations.
