Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar turned up the heat on the state government Wednesday, issuing a direct order to furnish a statement on the dire lack of medical facilities in Sangmner town. The spotlight fell on the shocking unavailability of MRI and CT scan machines at government hospitals, a problem plaguing Ahmednagar’s residents for too long.

Members of the House painted a grim picture: patients enduring hours on roads to reach urban centers for scans, often at exorbitant costs. Narwekar, visibly agitated, lambasted the administration for previous inaction despite repeated alerts. He mandated an urgent statewide audit of diagnostic equipment deficits, with special focus on Sangmner, to be tabled imminently.

‘If any officer believes they are not bound by the Speaker’s instructions, severe measures will follow,’ Narwekar cautioned, invoking the threat of breach of privilege against top bureaucrats. He also pressed for swift replies to outstanding notice motions, warning that delays could trigger formal proceedings against the chief secretary.

This episode reveals systemic flaws in public health delivery, particularly in semi-urban areas. With the Assembly session ongoing, the government’s response could influence future policy pushes for equitable medical access across Maharashtra, prompting calls for immediate investments in rural diagnostics.

The upper house of Parliament turned into a platform for critical national issues on Monday, with sharp critiques on AIIMS Raebareli’s stalled progress and farmer suicides in Maharashtra. Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Pramod Tiwari led the charge, decrying the institute’s inability to serve patients fully despite more than 12 years since its launch.

Detailing the shortages, Tiwari noted the bed count slashed from 960 to 610, with senior residents at a mere 37 out of 200 posts and professors numbering only 7 against 33 vacancies. This understaffing, he argued, hampers both patient care and medical education in the region. Linking it to its UPA-era foundation in 2013 under Sonia Gandhi’s influence, he alleged deliberate neglect fueled by political animosity, evidenced by the recent budget’s silence on funding.

Shifting focus, NCP MP Rajani Ashokrao Patil highlighted the tragedy in Beed, where 250+ farmer suicides have occurred this year amid similar crises across Marathwada districts. ‘Farmers drown in small loan interests while big borrowers flee abroad unscathed,’ she lamented, advocating for MSP legal backing to shield cultivators from vagaries of weather and markets.

As debates rage, these voices amplify calls for non-partisan approaches to bolster healthcare and agriculture, sectors vital to India’s growth story. The government faces mounting pressure to address these gaps before they escalate into larger crises.

In a strategic push to strengthen West Delhi’s public health network, Indira Gandhi Hospital (IGH) Dwarka has unveiled comprehensive service expansions. Spearheaded by the Delhi government led by CM Rekha Gupta, these improvements aim to provide equitable, efficient healthcare to all citizens.

A standout feature is the dialysis unit’s growth from 35 to 50 beds, set to minimize patient waitlists and streamline renal treatments. Emergency diagnostics got a lift with the installation of a high-powered 500 MA X-ray in radiology, offering swift, accurate scans for trauma victims.

Operation theater hours now stretch to 14 hours daily, from morning to evening, facilitating more surgeries and better recovery rates. The hospital’s new corneal retrieval center, partnered with AIIMS, will drive corneal donations, opening doors for life-changing transplants.

Since May 2025, the Brain Health Clinic has become a hub for integrated neuro-psychiatric care, handling dozens of cases daily—from migraines and epilepsy to strokes and psychological issues—under one roof for holistic treatment.

Health Minister Dr. Pankaj Kumar Singh stated, ‘Our mission goes beyond facilities; it’s about reducing burdens and guaranteeing prompt, effective treatment for Delhiites.’ This expansion signals the government’s resolve to modernize hospitals, meeting rising demands with superior efficiency.

The Delhi High Court received a detailed update from AIIMS on its facility enhancements, spotlighting plans for a state-of-the-art 3000-bed Vishram Sadan in Ansari Nagar. This ambitious project promises to alleviate the accommodation crisis plaguing thousands of patient relatives who flock to the institute daily.

Plagued by overcrowding, AIIMS currently struggles with limited resting spaces, forcing many attendants to sleep on streets or footpaths. The status report meticulously documents existing setups— from 2,500 ICU beds to specialized OPD wings—and identifies the guest house as a cornerstone solution. Designed with modular architecture, the facility will feature segregated sections for men, women, and families, complete with cafeterias, laundry, and 24/7 security.

Construction kickoff is slated post-monsoon, backed by central funding and AIIMS’s in-house engineering team. The report also touches on digital integrations like online booking portals for beds, ensuring equitable access. Court proceedings revealed that similar facilities at other AIIMS branches have reduced vagrancy by 40%, setting a precedent.

As Delhi grapples with healthcare demands, this development signals governmental priority on auxiliary services. Patient rights activists hail it as a ‘game-changer,’ while AIIMS vows transparency through quarterly progress reports to the bench. Completion by mid-2026 could redefine support infrastructure for medical tourism in India.

India’s public healthcare system just hit a game-changing benchmark: over 50,000 facilities certified under the National Quality Assurance Standards (NQAS). This isn’t just a number—it’s a revolution transforming how millions access medical care.

Picture this: a small PHC in Rajasthan or a bustling CHC in Kerala, both now NQAS-compliant, delivering world-class standards. The program mandates excellence in everything from emergency response to biomedical waste management, audited by independent assessors.

Since its inception, NQAS has empowered frontline workers with tools for accountability. States have ramped up efforts, with innovative training modules and digital monitoring platforms driving compliance. Uttar Pradesh alone boasts over 8,000 certifications, setting a national pace.

The impact? Measurable wins like 30% drop in hospital-acquired infections and enhanced maternal-child health outcomes. During COVID-19, NQAS facilities proved resilient, managing surges effectively.

Government data reveals a 400% increase in certifications over five years, fueled by policy incentives and public-private partnerships. Looking ahead, integration with digital health missions like ABDM promises even smarter systems.

Critics note disparities between urban and rural certification rates, urging focused interventions. Nevertheless, this milestone bolsters India’s global health stature, aligning with SDG targets. For patients, it means trust in every visit— a safer, more reliable healthcare ecosystem emerging across the nation.

Jamshedpur MLA Sarju Rai has raised serious concerns regarding the water supply at the new Dimna campus of MGM Hospital and Medical College. With increased seating capacity leading to a surge in patient and student numbers, the demand for water has significantly outstripped the current supply. The hospital’s five new deep borewells are proving insufficient to meet the needs of the hospital, college, and residential buildings. The project to supply water from the Subarnarekha River to the hospital is progressing at an alarmingly slow pace. Following discussions with the hospital superintendent and medical college principal, Mr. Rai has concluded that a severe water crisis is imminent by December if immediate measures are not taken. He criticized vested interests and political interference for hindering development projects, stating that such actions lead to the neglect of public health infrastructure, as seen with MGM Hospital. He recalled the premature inauguration of the new building a year ago for political gain, even without adequate water facilities, highlighting how senior health department officials bowed to ministerial pressure rather than advising against unprepared transfers. Rai also pointed out that the previous minister had five deep borewells installed against environmental regulations, a move he and experts warned would be inadequate. Now, as the hospital faces a shortage, he blames officials and politicians who prioritize political expediency over sound development. He further warned that as groundwater levels drop in December, the borewells will become less effective, potentially causing a broader water crisis in surrounding areas and leading to pressure on the district administration to divert drinking water meant for citizens to the hospital. Rai proposed a viable solution: negotiating with Tata Steel management at the secretary level to draw sufficient water for the hospital from the pipeline supplying Jamshedpur from Dimna Lake, and channeling it to the hospital’s dedicated water treatment plant. This, he believes, is the only practical way to ensure a consistent water supply for MGM Hospital.

A new super-specialty hospital, RIMS-2, slated to be Asia’s largest, is set to be built in Jharkhand. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide a financial assistance of ₹1000 crore for the project. This information was disclosed in a press release issued by the Additional Chief Secretary, Ajay Kumar Singh, concerning the project’s financial structure. The remaining funds will be allocated from the state plan. The design and construction of the hospital are in their final stages, with a groundbreaking ceremony planned soon. Once completed, this project will position Jharkhand as a major healthcare hub and medical tourism destination not only in eastern India but across the country. It promises to be a beacon of hope for both the residents of Jharkhand and patients across the nation. Following the Chief Minister’s directives, Health Minister Dr. Irfan Ansari, along with the Additional Chief Secretary of the Health Department, Ajay Kumar Singh, visited the Amrita Hospital in Faridabad, Delhi, to conduct an in-depth study of its medical care, management, and research capabilities. RIMS-2 will be developed based on the Amrita model. The project will feature an integrated super-specialty hospital with a capacity of 2600 beds, along with cardiology, oncology, neurosurgery, orthopedics, and other super-specialty services. The facility will also have a medical college, nursing and paramedical institutes, doctors’ quarters, hostels, a stadium, an advanced research center, and telemedicine units. This will provide comprehensive treatment and educational facilities under one roof.
