The Centre on Friday said, delaying the paddy procurement, which was supposed to have started on October 1 from Punjab and Haryana to October 11, is in the “overall interest of farmers and consumers as well because of the untimely rains, maturity of paddy grains is delayed”.

As per Indian Meteorological Department data, rainfall during September 2021 is 77 per cent and 139 per cent above normal in Punjab and Haryana, respectively, a release from the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution said.

Punjab and Haryana witnessed widespread protest and anger over the delay in the procurement. A day earlier even Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and requested him to take back the decision to postpone the paddy procurement by 10 days.

As a protest, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) President Sukhbir Badal accompanied a trolley filled with paddy to the Food Corporation of India (FCI) head office here to get the moisture content of the food grain checked.

Talking to the media, Badal said the postponement in paddy procurement would spell doom for the state’s economy. “Farmers had planned in advance and had started harvesting their crop since the last few days. Paddy had also reached ‘mandis’ in the state. Postponing procurement will not only result in harassment of farmers but will also jeopardize the paddy crop in case of inclement weather,” he said.

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: An employee working as an assistant in the office of Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij was on Friday handed over to police on allegations of leaking information about confidential matters by clicking photos of “secret files”, sources said.

Suspicious about his activities, the minister, in the presence of reporters, called up the police after checking the mobile phone of the employee and finding photos of some secret files, documents and information about confidential matters of the departments that Vij heads, they said.

On the Vij’s complaint, the employee was handed over to police.

This happened in the presence of the minister.

Police said they were investigating the matter.

Besides home, Vij also has portfolios of health, urban local bodies, technical education, and science and technology.

Police said the accused was working as an assistant in the minister’s office.

The sources said that a large number of photos regarding confidential matters was found to have been clicked by the accused who was working in the minister’s office for more than a year.

These were being sent to different people, sources said.

To whom these were being send is a matter of investigation, police said.

In the previous term of the BJP government in the state, Vij, who was then health minister, had caught a ‘CID officer’ allegedly spying outside his office.

However, later the then DGP had clarified that such personnel are deployed as per standard procedure to keep an eye on people visiting ministers.

At that time, Vij had been told by a member of his personal staff that a man whom they had spotted on many previous occasions wandering outside his office, was again in the premises.

  • Nationalist Amarinder Singh’s ouster political murder: Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Thursday termed Congress veteran Amarinder Singh’s exit as the Punjab CM a “political murder”, which he said was done as the “nationalist” leader was a hurdle in the party’s “gameplan”.

Vij also accused the Congress of hatching an “anti-national conspiracy” in Punjab while referring to state Congress chief Navjot Singh Sidhu’s visit to Islamabad for the swearing-in ceremony of Imran Khan in 2018.

After resigning as the Punjab CM following a bitter power tussle with Sidhu, Amarinder Singh had said he felt “humiliated” and called the Punjab Congress chief “anti-national” and “dangerous”.

Claiming that the Congress wants to bring Punjab and Pakistan closer, Vij alleged that an “anti-national conspiracy is being hatched” in the state.

“Nationalist Amarinder Singh was a hurdle in the Congress gameplan, this is why his political murder was done,” Vij told reporters here.

He further alleged that the “conspiracy” is being hatched by the top leadership of the Congress.

“All nationalist forces should join hands to defeat this conspiracy,” he said.

The Haryana minister said this was proved when Sidhu went to Pakistan to attend Imran Khan’s oath ceremony despite Amarinder Singh advising him against it.

Vij said in Pakistan, Sidhu not only heaped praise on Imran Khan but also warmly hugged the neighbouring nation’s Army chief.

“When Sidhu came back and was asked why he had gone to Pakistan despite Amarinder advising him not to go, he then said that my captain is not Amarinder Singh, my captain is Rahul Gandhi,” Vij said.

“It is clear from this that the game was being played and the conspiracy was being hatched against nationalist Amarinder Singh, who was obstructing this dirty conspiracy of the Congress,” Vij alleged.

Not only Amarinder Singh, all nationalist forces in Punjab should join hands “to defeat the gameplan of the Congress”, said Vij.

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Home Minister Anil Vij on Wednesday directed officials to immediately open alternative routes in Sonipat and Jhajjar districts towards Delhi as the Singhu and Tikri borders remain closed due to the farmers’ protest.

He asked them to start repairs on these roads so that people do not face any kind of problem commuting to Delhi on these routes from Haryana, an official statement said.

Keeping in mind the inconvenience faced by the people due to the closure of the main roads on the highway by the agitating farmers, all alternative routes will have to be opened and repaired at the earliest, and work in this regard will start soon, the minister said.

He said that repairs and filling of potholes on the roads being used by the people going to Delhi should be started from Thursday.

Haryana BKU (Chaduni) chief Gurnam Singh Chaduni, addressing a farmers’ gathering in Kurukshetra district on Wednesday, said the farmers sitting at Delhi’s borders will not budge till the three contentious farm laws are repealed.

Thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana and elsewhere have been sitting at Delhi’s borders for nearly 10 months demanding the repeal of the laws.

At the meeting with officials, Vij said Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation roads are the main alternative routes from Sonipat to Delhi, and they should be repaired at the earliest.

  • Haryana Congress delegation meets governor, seeks judicial probe into lathicharge on farmers

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: A delegation of Congress MLAs on Tuesday met Haryana Governor Bandaru Dattatreya, seeking a judicial probe into the lathi-charge on farmers and requesting him not to give his nod to the land acquisition bill passed by the state Assembly recently.

The state police had lathi-charged a group of farmers disrupting traffic movement on a highway while heading towards Karnal in Haryana to protest against a BJP meeting on August 28.

The state Assembly had in its monsoon session passed the Right to Fair Compensation and Transparency in Land Acquisition, Rehabilitation and Resettlement (Amendment) Bill, 2021, which has been dubbed as anti-farmer by Congress.

The Congress delegation led by the Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly, Bhupinder Singh Hooda, also submitted a video of an official, in which he is seen telling police to “break farmers’ heads”, according to a statement.

Submitting a memorandum, Hooda reiterated his demand for a judicial inquiry by a sitting judge of the High Court or a retired judge into the lathi-charge incident, in which around 10 farmers were injured.

Dubbing the land acquisition Bill as “anti-farmer”, the Congress delegation urged the Governor not to give his approval to it and send it back to the Haryana Assembly for reconsideration.

Hooda had earlier said the Haryana government has delivered another blow to the rights of farmers through the Bill, with the Congress demanding that it be either withdrawn or referred to a select committee.

“This Bill is anti-farmer, anti-poor and undemocratic. The Bill was passed hurriedly without a detailed discussion in the House,” Hooda told the Governor.

Hooda said the new Bill will hurt the interests of farmers who are already agitating against the Union government’s agriculture laws for the past nine months.

He claimed that provisions safeguarding the interests of farmers have been taken away.

“All provisions of the old Land Acquisition Act, such as the consent of farmers, the procedure for prior notice and giving residential plots with compensation in lieu of land, have been done away in the new Bill,” Hooda said.

“”Not only this, under the old law, the consent of 75 per cent of the landholders was required for the government authority within the public-private partnership and according to Section 10 of the Act, fertile land could not be acquired. This has been done away in the new law,” he said.

Earlier talking to reporters here before meeting the Governor, the former chief minister commenting on the completion of the 2,500 days of the BJP-led government, claiming, “Both terms of the BJP government have been full of failures.

“Then what is the government celebrating?” “Is the government celebrating the fact that it has made Haryana number one in unemployment, crime, drugs, scams, farmer protests and pollution?”” he asked.

“”Is the government celebrating the fact that it got the farmers beaten up with sticks? Is it being celebrated that the farmer is sitting on the streets today? Is it celebrating the fact that today the state has got a debt of Rs 2.5 lakh crore,”” Hooda asked.

  • Khattar’s anti-farmer agenda exposed: Amarinder Singh hits back at Haryana CM

    By PTI

CHANDIGARH: Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar’s “anti-farmer agenda” has been exposed as he defended the assault on peasants by accusing the Congress government in Punjab of fuelling the unrest against the Centre’s three farm laws, Amarinder Singh said on Monday.

Earlier in the day, Khattar put the onus of the unrest in his state against the Central legislations on the Amarinder Singh government in Punjab, the Congress and the Left.

Hitting back, the Punjab chief minister said, “The BJP’s adamant refusal to revoke the laws reflected the vested interests of the party and its leadership, which had once again placed their crony capitalist friends over the common man.

” Blaming the BJP squarely for the unrest, Amarinder Singh said the crisis would not have assumed such grave proportions had the BJP, including the Haryana chief minister and his deputy, heeded the farmers’ concerns and empathised with them “instead of taking refuge in shameful lies for the horrendous attacks on the peaceful farmers”.

He said Khattar’s “anti-farmer” agenda has been exposed as the Haryana chief minister tried to defend the criminal assault on protesting farmers by putting the onus of their agitation on Punjab.

“Can’t you see that the farmers of your own state are angry with you for your apathetic attitude towards them and your party’s stubborn refusal to repeal the farm laws?” he posed.

The farmers were fighting for their survival and did not need provocation from Punjab or any other state to protect themselves and their families, CM Amarinder Singh said.

“Repeal the farm laws instead of blaming Punjab for the mess your party has put the farming sector in.

The BJP will have to pay for their sins in the upcoming Assembly elections in various states and in every poll thereafter,” he said.

Around 10 people were allegedly injured on Saturday as police lathi-charged a group of farmers disrupting traffic movement on a national highway while heading towards Karnal to protest against a BJP meeting.

A Kisan Mahapanchayat on Monday sought registration of a case against those involved in the lathi-charge and threatened to lay siege to the secretariat there if their demands are not met by September 6.

The Punjab chief minister said the Khattar government’s repeated attempts to “forcibly end the farmers’ agitation and the derogatory and obnoxious terms used against farmers by various BJP leaders, will backfire.”

Recalling that the farmers had held protests across Punjab for two months before shifting focus to the Delhi borders, Amarinder Singh said his state had not witnessed a single incident of violence during the period.

“Even recently, when sugarcane farmers staged protests, we negotiated with them and resolved the issue instead of using brute force,” he added.

The Punjab chief minister said he and his government were firmly with the farmers in their anti-farm laws stance and were even giving compensation and jobs to the families of those who have died at the Delhi borders “because of the BJP’s follies”.

“A government or a political party which allows such tragic and totally avoidable loss of lives to continue under its watch cannot survive,” he added.
