Colombo buzzed with diplomatic activity as India’s Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan embarked on a landmark two-day visit, his first of its kind. On Sunday, he convened with Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, advocating for robust people-to-people linkages to elevate bilateral bonds.

The dialogue, as shared by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal on X, celebrated the shared civilizational ethos binding the two neighbors. ‘Discussions centered on fortifying ties through enhanced interpersonal relations,’ Jaiswal noted, praising the gracious hosting during the visit.

Radhakrishnan’s itinerary kicked off with a high-level huddle with President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Conversations spanned bilateral and cultural synergies, with a strong reaffirmation of India’s Neighbourhood First approach. Focus areas included ongoing Indian Housing initiatives and recovery projects post-Cyclone Dwathwa, backed by a substantial $450 million aid package.

This pioneering visit underscores India’s proactive neighborhood diplomacy. Radhakrishnan is set to inaugurate the third phase of housing for Tamil communities, symbolizing tangible aid. As the two-day tour unfolds, expectations run high for outcomes that could reshape regional cooperation dynamics.

With shared maritime borders and intertwined histories, India and Sri Lanka stand at a pivotal juncture. These engagements not only revive historical affinities but also pave the way for future collaborations in trade, security, and sustainable development, ensuring mutual prosperity in the Indian Ocean region.

Colombo witnessed a joyous occasion as 300 talented students hailing from every one of Sri Lanka’s 25 districts received the Mahatma Gandhi Scholarship from Indian authorities. The high-profile event at the Education Ministry featured key dignitaries including Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya, Deputy Minister Madura Senewiratne, and Acting Indian High Commissioner Satyanjal Pandey.

Designed on a merit-cum-means basis, the scholarship disburses 2,500 Sri Lankan Rupees monthly to top performers—six from each district. This combined ceremony for 2021-2024 batches highlighted the program’s continuity amid challenging times.

In her address, PM Amarasuriya thanked India for the scholarships and broader contributions, felicitating the students and drawing inspiration from Gandhi’s ethos. She encouraged them to embody his values in their personal and professional journeys.

Dr. Pandey, while congratulating the awardees, described the scholarship as more than monetary support—a symbol of enduring responsibility. He hoped the recipients would champion Gandhi’s wisdom in education and beyond, shaping a brighter future.

India’s educational outreach in Sri Lanka is expansive. Annually, 210 scholarships cover diverse disciplines from STEM to indigenous medicine. The ITEC program provides over 400 funded training opportunities for officials.

Bilateral momentum continues with a 2024 MoU for training 1,500 civil servants over five years, signed during President Dissanayake’s India visit. PM’s April 2025 trip secured 700 yearly slots for professional development.

These initiatives reflect a deep-rooted India-Sri Lanka bond, empowering youth to lead with integrity and innovation, true to Gandhi’s vision.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has expressed a strong desire for enhanced cooperation with India, particularly in trade, maritime security, and sustainable development. During a recent event hosted by the India Foundation, she emphasized Sri Lanka’s commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indian Ocean, where all nations can thrive. Amarasuriya highlighted the shared concerns regarding Indian Ocean security, acknowledging that while no bilateral relationship is without its challenges, the partnership between India and Sri Lanka is mature enough to manage them constructively.

A key area of discussion involved the sensitive issue of Indian fishermen operating in Sri Lankan waters, a practice like bottom trawling that deeply affects the livelihoods of Sri Lankan fishermen. The Prime Minister assured that both governments are dedicated to finding equitable solutions through empathetic dialogue and mutual respect. She stressed that the strength of their relationship lies not in the absence of differences, but in the ability to address them constructively.

Sri Lanka envisions itself as a vital maritime hub for the Indian Ocean, offering a cost-effective gateway for India’s global trade. Amarasuriya proposed that Sri Lanka could serve as a complementary partner in India’s ambitious ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative, potentially acting as a production base for sectors like textiles, electronics, and food processing. Collaborative efforts in maritime security, combating drug trafficking and piracy, and exploring renewable energy development were also underscored as crucial for mutual benefit and regional stability. The Prime Minister reiterated Sri Lanka’s commitment to international law and a peaceful, prosperous Indian Ocean region.

Furthermore, Amarasuriya recognized India’s pivotal role in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery. She spoke of deepening the economic partnership beyond the existing Free Trade Agreement, with hopes to soon recommence negotiations on an economic and technological cooperation agreement. Integrating Sri Lanka into India’s manufacturing and service sector value chains was identified as a mutually beneficial prospect.

Sri Lankan Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya has expressed a strong desire for enhanced cooperation with India, emphasizing trade, maritime security, and sustainable livelihoods. Speaking at an event, she highlighted Sri Lanka’s commitment to a free, open, and inclusive Indian Ocean, where all nations can thrive. Amarasuriya acknowledged the complexities in the bilateral relationship, particularly concerning Indian fishermen operating in Sri Lankan waters and employing practices like bottom trawling. She stressed the need for sensitive handling and sustainable solutions to protect the livelihoods of Sri Lankan fishermen, particularly those in the North who are rebuilding their lives. The Prime Minister conveyed confidence in the mutual commitment of both governments to address these issues with empathy and respect. She pointed to the maturity of the India-Sri Lanka relationship, capable of constructively managing differences through dialogue and mutual accommodation. Sri Lanka aims to become a key maritime hub for the Indian Ocean and a cost-efficient gateway for India’s global trade, leveraging its strategic port locations. Amarasuriya believes Sri Lanka can be a natural partner in realizing India’s ‘Viksit Bharat’ vision, advocating for continued collaboration on maritime security, combating drug trafficking and piracy, and enhancing regional cooperation, especially in renewable energy development. She affirmed that shared challenges necessitate a collective response, underpinned by collaboration, respect, and international law. The Prime Minister also underscored India’s vital role in Sri Lanka’s economic recovery, citing the successful India-Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement and the potential for deepening economic partnership through future agreements. She proposed Sri Lanka as a complementary production base for Indian industries aiming for global manufacturing leadership under the ‘Viksit Bharat’ initiative, particularly in sectors like textiles, electronics, and food processing. Earlier in her three-day visit, Amarasuriya met with Indian leaders to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional matters.
