  • UP’s ‘village of soldiers’ gears up to celebrate Independence Day

    By PTI

GHAZIPUR: In Gahmar, one of the country’s largest villages and where almost every household has members who have served or are serving in the Army, the enthusiasm is palpable on the eve of Independence Day with the tricolour hoisted atop every house.

In this “village of soldiers”, hoisting the tricolour on Independence Day and Republic Day is a tradition and the government’s ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign this year has only added to the spirit of patriotism.

The central government has launched the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign under which people are being encouraged to hoist the tricolour at their houses to mark 75 years of India’s independence.

Villagers say soldiers from Gahmar have fought in wars from World War II to Kargil conflict.

Pictures and medals of soldiers adorn shelves in most houses of Gahmar. Village head Balwant Singh estimates that Gahmar has given 20,000 soldiers to the country so far. “Currently, about 5,000 villagers are working in different positions in the Army,” he said.

Gahmar has a population of about 1.25 lakh.

“The spirit of patriotism resides in the heart of every family living here. Ours is a village of soldiers. You will definitely find a soldier in almost every house here. Many members of most families are serving in the Army,” Balwant Singh told PTI.

“Though Independence Day is celebrated every year in Gahmar village, this time special preparations are being made to mark 75 years of independence. People of the village have also joined the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign,” he said.

“The tricolour has been hoisted atop every house in the village and the administration is also doing its bit to make the campaign a success,” he added.

Ishwar Chandra, a social worker, said the spirit of patriotism gripped the village after many of its soldiers laid down their lives in World War II.

“Multiple generations of some families have been associated with the Army,” he said.

One such family is that of Lt.Col Ram Bachan Singh (retd.) who took part in the 1971 India-Pakistan war. Three generations of Ram Bachan’s family have served in the Army. His son Ashok is currently serving in the Army.

Gahmar even has a training ground to help those who wish to join the Army prepare for it.

“Village youths have arranged all the necessary equipment for running and exercise in a ground near a river bank and they train every morning and evening,” social worker Chandra said.

The ground resembles an Army training unit, he said, adding that it has a running track and various other facilities needed for rigorous training for Army recruitment.

Chandra said youths of the village are inspired by their elders and also get preference in Army recruitment as children of ex-servicemen.

“But due to youngsters focusing on training for military recruitment instead of pursuing higher education, hardly a dozen people from the village have made it to officer ranks,” he said.

  • Union Minister Subhas Sarkar accuses Mamata government of ‘not allowing’ him to hoist national flag

    By PTI

KOLKATA: Union Minister Subhas Sarkar on Saturday alleged that he was “not allowed” by the West Bengal government to hoist the national flag at a correctional home in Paschim Medinipur district as part of the Centre’s ‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiatives.

He claimed that the state officials were initiated about his visit to the Midnapore Central Correctional Home but he found “no arrangements were made to hoist the tricolour” there.

“When I stepped into the premises, I found no arrangements were made to hoist the national flag.

It shows the West Bengal government’s apathy and indifference towards the sacrifice of our heroes,” he told reporters outside the jail compound.

Sarkar, the union minister of state for education, said he would not blame the correctional home authorities as they “followed the directives of the state government and there was apparently no communication about the August 13 programme”.

“Despite all official communication, including my telephonic talk with the chief secretary, I was not given permission to celebrate the event and pay my tributes to the martyrs of West Bengal at the Midnapore Central Jail (Midnapore Central Correctional Home),” he posted on his official Facebook page.

‘Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav’ and ‘Har ghar tiranga’ initiatives have been taken by the Centre to celebrate 75 years of Independence.

Responding to Sarkar’s comments, TMC spokesperson Sukhendu Sekhar Roy said “nothing could be more ridiculous than such a statement on his part.”

The TMC’s Rajya Sabha MP claimed that Sarkar created the controversy to show the state government in poor light as “everywhere in the state, arrangements are made to hoist the tricolour”.

“We should not learn about patriotism or how to show respect to the country’s freedom fighters from the BJP,” he added.

  • Flags being imported from China for ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative, alleges Maharashtra Congress chief

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Maharashtra Congress president Nana Patole on Wednesday claimed that tricolours were being imported from China for the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ initiative launched by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led central government.

He was speaking in Buldhana district as part of the Azadi Gaurav Padyatra of the Congress.

“A long struggle had to be waged to oust the tyrannical British rule. The country was united under the Congress flag and Congress’s idea of taking everyone together brought independence to this country. People who have not contributed anything in this freedom struggle are today running events in the name of ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign,” Patole charged.

Tricolours are being imported from China for this event, which is an insult to the freedom fighters and the national flag, the Congress leader claimed.

Patole further said that when the country became independent, not even a needle was manufactured in the country, but under the visionary leadership of Jawaharlal Nehru, India reached the pinnacle of progress.

Former prime ministers Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi also successfully took India forward by driving development.

After them, PV Narasimha Rao, Manmohan Singh also implemented various development schemes in the country, he said.

“Indiraji and Rajivji sacrificed (their lives) for the country. But today’s BJP government is selling the public companies that were created by the Congress and were the glory of the country. Schemes like ‘Agnipath’ are like rubbing salt into the wounds of the youth. Inflation, and unemployment have increased tremendously. People are being looted by imposing GST on grocery items as well,” the former MP added.

“China is encroaching on our borders, but the prime minister is not talking about it. On the contrary, attention is being paid to how they get financial benefits by importing tricolour flags from China,” he said.

Patole alleged that the BJP came to power through lies and it cheated the people of the country and forgotten the promises made to the people.

Work will be done to expose the falsehood of the BJP by creating public awareness through this padayatra, he charged.

Legislature party leader and former minister Balasaheb Thorat participated in the Azadi Gaurav Padayatra in Dhule and Jalgaon districts.

He met the families of freedom fighters at Krantibhumi Kapadne in Dhule district.

  • Join ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’: Amit Shah

    By Express News Service

NEW DELHI: Urging every citizen to hoist the national flag at their houses during ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign (August 13 to 15), Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Tuesday said the programme gives a message to the world about the determination of people of India for the prosperity of the nation. He said the call for flag hoisting at each household under Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav (AKAM) is also to tell the younger generation about the sacrifices made by the freedom fighters during the 90-year-long struggle and instil a feeling of patriotism among them.

“This campaign Har Ghar Tiranga is a message to the world that each Indian citizen will work unitedly for the next 25 years, according to the assertion of people who drafted the Constitution and expectation of the Constitution, for the development, accomplishment, security and carrying forward the Indian culture,” said Shah. He was speaking at ‘Tiranga Utsav’, an event held to celebrate the 146th birth anniversary of freedom fighter Pingali Venkayya, who designed the national flag. On the occasion, Shah also launched ‘Tiranga’ anthem and video. The family of Venkayya was felicitated at the event. A commemorative postage stamp in honour of Venkayya was also released.

Speaking about the significance of the national flag, Shah said, “Jawan on the border pledges allegiance to this flag and makes supreme sacrifice. Crores of farmers of this country see this flag and make efforts to feed the entire world. This is the flag which has been established in the hearts of countrymen as a symbol of the country.” Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a decision to celebrate AKAM to pay true homage to heroes of the freedom struggle and create awareness among children about them. Another objective is to tell each citizen about 75 years of achievements and let the world know our strength,” he said.
