In a touching session of the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday reflected on the impending retirement of 59 members scheduled from April to July. Representing 20 states and multiple parties, including nine women, this biennial event evokes deep emotions in the chamber.

Thanking Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan for the platform, Modi highlighted the presence of stalwarts like H.D. Deve Gowda, Mallikarjun Kharge, and Harivansh among the outgoing. ‘This House thrives on diverse discussions where every voice matters,’ he observed. Partisan differences fade during goodbyes, giving way to shared pride in their transition to new chapters.

Turning to Harivansh, Modi lauded his poise and eloquence in maintaining decorum, especially during challenging times. ‘His shoulders often bear the weight of proceedings, handled with exceptional skill,’ the PM said. Harivansh’s outreach to youth nationwide, promoting national consciousness through dialogue, underscores his multifaceted role as both writer and doer.

Looking ahead, Modi assured that seasoned members would guide newcomers, blending experience with youthful vigor to elevate the Rajya Sabha. ‘Democracy flourishes on second opinions,’ he asserted, drawing a parallel to personal consultations with mentors. ‘Varied perspectives enrich our debates; diversity remains our paramount power.’ Concluding with warm wishes and gratitude, Modi celebrated their invaluable service.

Former MP Prajwal Revanna broke down on Friday after the Karnataka MP/MLA Special Court held him guilty of raping a domestic help. On Saturday, the court pronounced the verdict in one of the four rape cases registered against Prajwal, the grandson of former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda.

A Special Court in Bengaluru, designated to handle criminal cases involving former and sitting MPs and MLAs, convicted former Hassan MP Prajwal Revanna in one rape case. The court sentenced him to rigorous imprisonment for the remainder of his life. This is the maximum punishment prescribed under Section 376(2) of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with aggravated forms of rape, particularly when committed by individuals in positions of authority or trust.

Prajwal’s father, Hardanahalli Devegowda Revanna (HD Revanna), is a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) in Karnataka, representing the Holenarasipur constituency in Hassan district. The case against Prajwal was initiated following a complaint by a woman from K R Nagar in Mysuru.
