  • DRDE to set up advanced biological defence lab in Gwalior to research, fight dangerous viruses

    By PTI

GWALIOR: A new laboratory to study viruses dangerous to humans will be set up at the Defence Research Development Establishment (DRDE) in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh shortly, a senior official said.

The proposed Advanced Biological Defence Research Centre (ABDRC) will focus on dangerous viruses, its effect on humans and come up with safeguards and develop equipment to fight them, DRDE Director Dr Manmohan Parida told reporters on the sidelines of a exhibition of the premier institution here on Friday.

“Defence labs are working hard to make India self-reliant and society is getting benefited by it. The DRDE’s laboratory here has already provided defence to the Army to fend off nuclear and chemical warfare. DRDE scientists have already developed technology for detection of and defence from dengue, anthrax and such dangerous viruses,” he said.

“The new ABDRC laboratory with the help of artificial intelligence and cyber techniques will develop ways to repel virus attacks instantly. ABDRC is going to be of Bio Safety Level (BSL) – 4, which very few countries have right now,” Parida informed.

He said the DRDE laboratory has been successful in equipping T-90 tanks with the means to ward off nuclear, chemical and biological attacks, adding that “even Israel and Egypt have evinced keen interest in our products.”

The products of DRDE have not only saved valuable foreign exchange but made India emerge as a big exporter, he added.

Amid the coronavirus outbreak, DRDE has come up with top quality sanitisers, N -95 masks and PPE kits, while a lamp kit for PCR test developed recently has shown encouraging initial results, he said.

“We will join hands with IITs and universities to enhance DRDE’s role in biological defence, as well as to foster scientific temper and promote research for the benefit of people,” Parida said.

  • Country will disintegrate if Hindus grow weaker in number, power: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat

    By Express News Service

BHOPAL: “Bharat (India) and Hindu cannot be separate. If Bharat (India) wants to remain as Bharat (India) then Bharat (India) will have to remain Hindu and if Hindu wants to remain as Hindu, then Bharat (India) will have to be kept Akhand (undivided),” RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said on Saturday, November 27, 2021.

Addressing an event to mark the completion of 50 years of the Swadesh newspaper group in Gwalior on Saturday evening, the RSS chief said the country will disintegrate whenever Hindu will become weak in power and numbers.

“Why did (Bharat) India disintegrate or why did Pakistan happen. The Hindus there became weak in power first and then in numbers, which is why Pakistan became Pakistan and not Hindustan or Bharat. The same land was the birthplace of Vedas and also the place where Sanskrit Vyakran evolved. Even Sindhu from which the word Hindu originated is there (in modern Pakistan). But still, when the country was partitioned, the land which became Pakistan didn’t wish to be named as Bharat or Hindustan,” Bhagwat said.

Bhagwat’s linking of the creation of Pakistan with the weakening of Hindus, came just two days after he, during a book launch event in Noida (UP) targeted those, who talk about dividing India, saying that India had a major setback at the time of Partition that cannot be forgotten and will never be repeated.

At the Gwalior event on Saturday evening, where MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan was among those present, the RSS chief while cautioning about the decline in the numbers and power of Hindus, said in all such parts of the country, there is rising instability, a threat to unity and integration as well as major social and economic problems.

  • Gwalior’s ‘Kejriwal’ hopes Delhi CM can one day taste his chaat

    By Express News Service

BHOPAL:  While Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is working hard to broaden the Aam Aadmi Party’s base in poll-bound Punjab, Uttarakhand, Goa and Uttar Pradesh, his lookalike is tantalising the taste buds of foodies in Gwalior.

Meet Gaurav Gupta, the chaat seller. He is backer of Kejriwal’s bete noire, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The 45-year-old has been running the Guptaji Ki Swadishth Chaat stall in the crowded Moti Mahal area for 10-12 years. While the Delhi CM is known for his resolve to make life better for the common man, his lookalike specialises in delighting them with fares like papadi chaat, palak papadi, samosas, meetha samosas and dahi vadas.

The Class X dropout remembers fondly how his friends told him that he was a ‘duplicate’ of the Delhi CM. “In the last few months, social media has made me famous as a duplicate of Kejriwal. My stall is often called Kejriwal’s chaat stall. Even the number of daily customers has grown by 30-40% owing to my videos doing the rounds on social media,” said Gupta.

Gupta, father of a daughter and a son, originally hails from UP’s Auraiya district. He has been in Gwalior for decades, after his father shifted here to sell jaljeera water in used liquor bottles. “My father has returned to UP, but we’ve made Gwalior our home,” he said.

Hailing from a family which has long been a BJP supporter, Gupta says he backs PM Modi, but is also a fan of Kejriwal’s honest politics. “Arvind Kejriwal is one of the most honest politicians in the country and I’m happy that I’m his lookalike,” he said proudly.

Maintaining that he doesn’t want to join politics, Gupta said after he became famous as Kejriwal’s lookalike, local AAP workers requested him to join their party. “I refused.  I’m happy with daily earnings of `700-`800. I want  the PM and the CM to visit my stall,” Gupta said.

    By Express News Service

BHOPAL: Three employees of the city municipal corporation died, while another was injured critically when the platform/trolley of the hydraulic crane broke while being used to install the national flag on a post office building in Gwalior city of Madhya Pradesh on Saturday morning.

The deceased employees were identified as Pradip Rajouria (32), Kuldip Dandotiya (35), and Vinod Sharma (55), while the injured employee was identified as Manzar Alam Khan.

The killer mishap happened at around 8 am when the municipal corporation staff was installing the national flag on the post office building (a heritage building) and suddenly the trolley/platform of the crane broke. The three employees of the municipal corporation working on the building’s terrace came under the crane’s broken part and died instantly.

The deceased employees were identified as Pradip Rajouria (32), Kuldip Dandotiya (35), and Vinod Sharma (55), while the injured were identified as Manzar Alam Khan.

On the complaint of the injured employee Manzar Alam Khan, the Gwalior district police lodged a case u/s 304 IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) against the Gwalior Municipal Corporation (GMC) fire officer Umang Pradhan and fire brigade hydraulic crane machine vehicle driver Dharmendra Verma.

In the complaint, the injured employee of the municipal corporation alleged that despite requests by all four employees not to use the hydraulic crane machine (as the staff was untrained), both Pradhan and Verma forcibly used the heavy machine, resulting in the mishap.

The flag was installed on the heritage Maharaj Vada building housing the post office, as part of decorations on the historical building just like previous years for the Independence Day celebrations.

Coming to know about the tragedy, the state’s minister in charge of Gwalior district, Tulsiram Silawat rushed to the spot and ordered a detailed probe into the matter. The state government announced Rs 4 lakh ex gratia to the kin of the deceased employees and also government jobs on compassionate ground to one dependent of each of the three employees.

According to official sources in Gwalior, a magisterial probe has been ordered by the district collector into the entire mishap.

Municipal Corporation’s employee leader Jairaj Singh Chouhan blamed senior officials of the GMC for the killer mishap. “The senior officials are to be solely blamed for the killer mishap, as they sent untrained employees to install the flag through the crane on the building. All senior officials of the municipal corporation should be booked for murder and arrested.”

Meanwhile, ex-CMs and senior Congress leaders Kamal Nath and Digvijaya Singh, while grieving the deaths of the three employees, demanded a detailed probe into the entire mishap. Singh also questioned why the post of Gwalior municipal commissioner is lying vacant.

  • Torrential rains, overflowing dams cause major floods in MP’s Gwalior-Chambal region

    By Express News Service
BHOPAL: Surge in major rivers due to torrential rains and overflowing dams have caused major floods in a large part of the Gwalior-Chambal region of Madhya Pradesh and adjoining Rajasthan. Over 1100 villages in six districts of MP’s Gwalior-Chambal region have been hit by the flood. Among them, 200 are badly affected, while 22 have been marooned.

All major rivers, including Sindh, Kuwari, Kuno, Chambal and Parvati are in spate in most districts of the region, including Shivpuri, Sheopur, Datia, Guna, Gwalior and Bhind districts. Out of these districts, Shivpuri is worst hit.

“1600 people have been rescued so far by the state home guards, SDRF and NDRF teams, while the five helicopters of the Indian Air Force are airlifting people from various flood-hit villages, despite the weather being on the wrong side,” chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said.

“The situation in Shivpuri is particularly grim as the district has reported 800 mm rainfall in just 48 hours. Our two cabinet ministers Yashodhara Raje Scindia and Mahendra Singh Sisodiya are camping in Shivpuri district and coordinating flood relief and rescue operations from a control room,” the CM said.

With the MP CM requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Defence minister Rajnath Singh for armed forces, four columns of the Army, each column comprising 80 jawans have been rushed to MP from Gwalior and Jhansi to further accelerate the rescue of people stranded villagers — particularly in Shivpuri, Datia, Guna and Sheopur districts.

While two NDRF teams are already engaged in rescue operations and three more have been sent from Varanasi and Lucknow in UP.

In Datia district, two of three road bridges built over the Sindh river were washed out following the overflowing Manikheda Dam. Five trains have been partially cancelled or diverted by the West Central Railway’s Bhopal Division due to submerging of tracks between Shivpuri and Mahona.

Meanwhile, the IAF rescue operations by five helicopters which started on Monday couldn’t take off for a long time on Tuesday, owing to inclement weather, particularly hanging clouds.

Three villagers, including a teenager, had to spend around 15-20 hours on trees after being surrounded by flood in Bichi village of Shivpuri district. With the IAF copters not being able to reach the villagers stranded on the trees, it was the NDRF team that finally rescued them on Tuesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, there seems to be no respite in sight for rain-flood affected districts, as the Met Department has sounded red alert for five districts, including Shivpuri, Guna and Sheopur (Gwalior-Chambal region), orange alert for nine districts and yellow alert for eight districts.
