Tehran and New Delhi are closer than ever after India’s decisive ‘no’ to a UN resolution targeting Iran’s protest handling. Western powers, including the EU heavyweights and Japan, pushed the measure, but India stood firm with the Global South, earning effusive thanks from Iranian envoy Mohammad Fathali.

The Saturday statement came amid fallout from Iran’s December protests. Fathali hailed India’s ‘theoretical and steadfast support’ on X, praising its defense of sovereignty against ‘political motivations.’ The vote tally: 25 yes, 7 no—including India—and 14 abstentions.

This isn’t just diplomacy; it’s a statement. India rejected meddling in domestic matters, a cornerstone of its non-alignment legacy. Proponents like Britain, Italy, and South Korea aimed to spotlight alleged atrocities, but New Delhi saw hypocrisy in Western lectures.

India’s position spotlights two realities. First, it won’t kowtow to transatlantic pressure groups. Second, unusual bedfellows emerged: India, China, Pakistan united against the resolution. In a US tariff-threatened world, India’s defiance underscores strategic autonomy.

Fathali’s gratitude tweet went viral, symbolizing warming Indo-Iran ties. Energy security, Chabahar port, and countering Pakistan play into this. Critics may cry inconsistency on rights, but India prioritizes realpolitik.

As Global South voices rise, India’s UN play repositions it as a bridge-builder, not a Western satellite. The message to Washington and Brussels is unmistakable: India’s path is its own.

In a powerful show of defiance, South Africans took to the streets of Cape Town on Friday, protesting what they call an unlawful US military incursion into Venezuela. The focal point: the January 3 operation that reportedly captured President Nicolas Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, transporting them against their will to New York.

Adderley Street transformed into a sea of activism by midday. Protesters hoisted signs proclaiming ‘Stop US Imperialism’ and ‘Get US Out of Venezuela,’ their voices united in cries of ‘Free Maduro’ and ‘Free Venezuela.’ The South African BDS Coalition, behind the event, appealed for mass participation in the upcoming February 6 International Day Against US Imperialism, linking causes from Palestine to Venezuela.

Global condemnation has mounted since the alleged raid, with fears of escalating conflict. The coalition warned that US belligerence invites worldwide war and economic ruin, framing the incident as a brazen challenge to sovereignty.

Retired pharmacist Michael Tytus, 75, captured the sentiment: ‘America’s actions in Venezuela are illegal—a clear sign of their global bullying.’ He stressed the need for relentless opposition, adding, ‘People aren’t free because of US interference. We’ll protest until they back off.’

Organizer and student Farik Thiba heightened the stakes: ‘This breaks every rule of international law. Venezuela is the beginning; anyone could be next, including us in South Africa.’ He hoped for stronger Global South cohesion to halt the momentum.

This Cape Town rally underscores a widening rift, as nations and activists worldwide decry the US move and rally behind Maduro. With international tensions at a boiling point, the protest signals broader resistance against perceived hegemony.

In a move signaling continued solidarity, China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi held the ninth round of strategic dialogue with the African Union on January 8 at its Addis Ababa headquarters. The meeting with AU Commission Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat comes at a time when both powers are navigating key development milestones.

Wang commended the AU for spearheading unity across Africa, playing a unique role in bilateral relations. He pointed to President Xi’s 13-year streak of messages to the AU summit as evidence of China’s prioritized engagement.

Marking dual milestones – 70 years of China-Africa diplomatic ties and 36 straight years of early-year FM visits to the continent – Wang stressed these as symbols of policy consistency and developing world unity.

‘We stand at a new juncture with immense cooperation prospects,’ Wang stated. China aims to aid Africa’s modernization through shared development, support AU-led initiatives, and collaborate on global initiatives for infrastructure, digital economy, green development, and industrial chains.

Mahamat reciprocated warmly, calling China a trusted ally rooted in respect and mutual growth. Thankful for sustained support, the AU upheld the one-China principle, endorsed China’s Taiwan stance, and committed to joint efforts for Global South advocacy and equitable world progress.
