The gaming industry is reeling from the impact of the ban on real money games following the passage of the Online Gaming Bill. The effects of the ban are expected to be felt soon, as sources indicate that the popular gaming app Mobile Premier League (MPL) may soon lay off a significant number of employees. According to a company insider familiar with the company’s plans, the company may let go of 60% of its workforce following the new laws passed for the online gaming industry.

MPL is strengthening its operations in the US market, focusing on free-to-play games, according to the Economic Times. A source within the company stated that approximately 300 of the 500 Indian employees working in marketing, operations, finance, engineering, and legal teams will be laid off.

An internal email viewed by Reuters, sent to the staff, revealed that MPL CEO Sai Srinivas wrote, “With a heavy heart, we have decided to make significant cuts to our Indian team.” The email did not specify the number of layoffs.

He stated that they are committed to providing all possible assistance to those affected. India accounts for 50% of M League’s revenue, and this change means that they will not be able to earn any revenue from India in the future.

Why Games Like MPL-Dream 11 Became Popular

The government has banned online real money games, citing financial losses among young people as a reason. This decision by the government has led to the closure of online gaming apps. MPL and Dream11 have become quite popular among people in recent years because they offer winners the opportunity to win financial prizes. The online gaming industry claims that games depend on skills and are therefore not gambling.

Several online gaming platforms, including prominent names like WinZO and Dream11, have suspended their operations in response to the Indian government’s crackdown on online money games. The Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, was passed by both houses of Parliament on Thursday without debate. This bill aims to curb harmful online money gaming while promoting e-sports and online social games. The legislation also restricts advertisements for online money games and prevents financial institutions from handling transactions related to these games. Moreover, it seeks to outlaw all forms of online betting and gambling, encompassing games like poker, rummy, and fantasy sports. Affected platforms include WinZO, Mobile Premier League, Zupee, and PokerBaazi (operated by Nazara Tech’s associate firm, Moonshine Technologies). RummyCulture (Gameskraft Technologies), Dream11, A23 Rummy and A23 Poker (Head Digital Works), and Probo have also ceased their online money game operations. The new regulations are expected to significantly impact India’s $3.8 billion gaming sector, leading to potential shifts in the market.

A new online gaming law has been implemented in India, targeting online real money games where players wager actual currency. The government introduced the Online Gaming Bill 2025 to curb…

A new online gaming law has been implemented in India, targeting online real money games where players wager actual currency. The government introduced the Online Gaming Bill 2025 to curb these games. The primary focus is now on promoting esports, a move expected to significantly impact India’s gaming ecosystem, IT industry, and publicly listed companies.

**Distinction between Esports and Money Games**
Esports represent a realm of skill and strategy, where players triumph through their mental prowess and reflexes. Whether it’s the battlegrounds of BGMI, the shootouts in Valorant, the football fields of FIFA, or the digital warfields of Clash Royale and Dota, success hinges on performance. Esports feature leagues, tournaments, and substantial prize money, with players recognized as true “sports stars.”

In contrast, money games involve players staking real money, and the outcome relies not just on skill but also on luck. Whether selecting teams on Dream11, sitting at a RummyCircle or Poker table, or playing Teen Patti cash games, fortune often plays a bigger role than skill in securing a win.

**Government’s New Strategy**

* Esports will now be categorized as sports, not gambling/betting.
* The government is preparing to establish a National Authority to determine:
* Which games are legal and which are prohibited.
* Registration of all games will be mandatory.
* Esports tournaments will be encouraged.
* Emphasis on developing domestic Indian games, similar to PUBG.
* Promotion of esports versions of traditional sports like cricket, football, and chess.

This presents opportunities for Indian game developers. Esports players will receive prize money and international exposure. The IT and startup sectors will gain new direction, enabling India to secure a position in the global esports market.

**Challenges**
The ban on money games will disrupt the business models of several companies, leading to potential job losses, as fantasy and rummy apps employed a large number of people. Furthermore, the government will need to maintain a clear distinction between esports and gambling-like games.

**How the Government will Promote E-Gaming**
Following the passage of the new gaming bill, the government will focus on esports by issuing new guidelines. The government will promote esports in India by taking similar crucial steps.

Zupee, a prominent skill-based online gaming platform based in India, has ceased offering its real-money gaming services.
The Indian government recently introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha aimed at regulating online gaming. The ‘Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Bill’ proposes to ban online gaming related to…

The Indian government recently introduced a bill in the Lok Sabha aimed at regulating online gaming. The ‘Online Gaming Promotion and Regulation Bill’ proposes to ban online gaming related to money or its advertisement, with penalties including imprisonment and fines for those who offer or advertise such games. The bill differentiates these games from e-sports and online social games, promoting the latter. Violators of the bill’s provisions for offering online money gaming services may face up to three years in prison, a fine of up to one crore rupees, or both. Advertisers who violate the rules may be imprisoned for up to two years and/or fined up to 50 lakh rupees. Those involved in transactions related to online money gaming could face similar penalties. Repeat offenses related to online money gaming could result in stricter penalties, including imprisonment of 3-5 years and fines. The objective of the bill is to regulate online gaming by promoting online social games and e-sports while prohibiting money-related online gaming in the public interest, due to its use in money laundering and other illegal activities. Leading players in the market, like Dream11 and others, are now facing potential challenges. The Indian online gaming market is currently valued at $3.7 billion and is projected to more than double to $9.1 billion by 2029. The All India Gaming Federation (AIGF) has appealed to the Home Minister, expressing concerns that a complete ban could severely harm the industry. The current size of the Indian gaming market is estimated at ₹31,938 crore. Real Money Gaming (RMG) plays a significant role, accounting for approximately 85.7% of the total revenue, or ₹27,438 crore, in 2024. More than 45 crore Indians play online games. The sector is currently valued at $25 billion and contributes over ₹25,000 crore in taxes annually. The online gaming sector employs over 2 lakh people, with ₹25,000 crore in FDI flowing into the industry. A complete ban could result in an annual tax loss of ₹20,000 crore for the government. Approximately ₹6,000 crore is spent annually on promotion and technology. There are over 1100 gaming companies in the country, including over 400 startups. A 2023 HP Gaming Landscape Study surveyed 3,000 gamers across 15 cities, revealing that 58% of women spend up to 12 hours per week on gaming, while the figure for men is 74%. In North India, 54% of women are engaged in serious gaming, compared to 74% in West India.

The Lok Sabha recently approved the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, 2025, a significant legislative move aimed at governing India’s burgeoning online gaming sector. This bill seeks to foster specific areas of the industry while imposing restrictions on others. Introduced by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw and subsequently passed in the Lok Sabha, the bill has two primary objectives: to support the growth of e-sports and educational gaming, and to completely prohibit real-money online gaming (RMG), irrespective of whether the games involve skill or chance. The new law is poised to significantly impact India’s digital entertainment and gaming landscape, affecting gaming platforms, fintech payment systems, advertisers, influencers, and users alike. The bill establishes a national regulatory framework with the following objectives: encouraging the growth of esports and social or educational gaming; setting rules for digital gaming platforms and formally acknowledging legitimate games; banning all forms of online real-money gaming, including related advertisements and financial transactions; and safeguarding young people and vulnerable groups from the financial, psychological, and social risks linked to real-money gaming. Key definitions within the bill include ‘Online Game,’ which encompasses any digital or electronic game played via the internet or electronic devices; ‘Online Money Game,’ a game of skill, chance, or both, involving monetary stakes for potential winnings; ‘E-sports,’ recognized competitive digital games based on skill, played without monetary stakes; and ‘Social Games,’ designed for fun, learning, or recreation, without any wagering. E-sports and social games are exempt from the ban and will receive support through institutional initiatives. Prohibited activities under the bill include the provision or enablement of any form of online real-money gaming, advertising or promoting real-money games (including via influencers), and money transfers for such games. Violators face penalties of up to three years in prison, with repeat offenses potentially leading to fines of up to Rs 2 crore. Authorities are granted extensive enforcement powers, including the ability to conduct searches and make arrests without warrants, access both physical and digital spaces, and block content on platforms violating the ban. While the bill strictly prohibits real-money gaming, it actively promotes growth in areas such as e-sports, which will be officially recognized and supported similarly to traditional sports, and educational and social games, provided they do not involve money. The need for this bill is underscored by the rapid expansion of India’s online gaming industry, which has attracted over 400 million users. However, the government has expressed serious concerns about the rising issues of addiction, mental health problems, financial losses among vulnerable groups, and potential links to illicit activities. The bill aims to supersede all existing state-level regulations, cover both domestic and international platforms catering to Indian users, and may face legal challenges from industry players and states.

Artificial intelligence is streamlining tasks across various industries, with the gaming sector increasingly leveraging its capabilities. A recent Google Cloud survey indicates that 87% of game developers are now utilizing AI agents to automate and streamline tasks. This shift comes as the gaming industry focuses on reducing costs, especially after significant layoffs.

AI is proving instrumental in automating repetitive tasks, enabling developers to concentrate on more creative aspects of game development. Game publishers are turning to AI to address industry-wide challenges such as rising costs and lengthy creation cycles, driven by the need to meet the expectations of gaming enthusiasts and the pressures of intense competition. The study, conducted by Google and The Harris Poll, surveyed 615 game developers from South Korea, the United States, Finland, Norway, and Sweden between late June and early July.

The study reveals that approximately 44% of developers use AI agents to optimize content and accelerate the processing of information, including text, code, voice, audio, and video. However, the integration of AI in video games remains a controversial topic, sparking concerns about job displacement, intellectual property disputes, and potential wage reductions within the gaming industry.

Last year, Hollywood video game performers went on strike over AI and wage-related issues, leading to studio closures and the loss of over 10,000 jobs. The gaming industry is projected to experience growth this year and the next, fueled by premium title releases and the launch of new consoles, which are expected to increase spending. According to the survey, 94% of developers anticipate that AI will reduce overall development costs in the long run.
