In a move that has ignited outrage across activist circles, Pakistani police arrested Baloch Yakjehti Committee member Fouzia Baloch on Saturday, prompting fierce condemnation from leading human rights groups. The incident unfolded in Karachi, spotlighting the volatile human rights situation in Balochistan.

Fouzia’s detention occurred against the backdrop of her brother Dadshah Baloch’s enforced disappearance. Security personnel reportedly dragged him from their home on April 21, with no trace since. When the family sought police assistance, officials refused to register the case, leaving them helpless.

Planning to expose the ordeal publicly, Fouzia and her kin arrived at the Karachi Press Club for a media briefing. Police intercepted them there, whisking Fouzia away to parts unknown.

BYC leaders called for her swift release alongside her brother’s, appealing to global human rights forums to intervene. ‘Pakistan must end this reign of fear,’ they declared.

Paank, the human rights arm of the Baloch National Movement, framed the arrest as systematic suppression of grieving families. They argue it’s designed to block access to justice and perpetuate silence on disappearances.

Similarly, Baloch Voice for Justice highlighted the erosion of dissent spaces. ‘Intimidation tactics target those who dare question missing relatives,’ the group noted, emphasizing violations of fundamental rights.

The Baloch Students Organization Azad had previously raised alarms on Thursday, pointing to a spike in abductions of Baloch women. Around 20 cases this year from various districts involve torture and smear campaigns to undermine the independence movement, they charged.

This latest episode amplifies longstanding grievances in Balochistan, where enforced disappearances have become a flashpoint. Rights advocates warn that without accountability, such actions risk escalating regional instability and drawing sharper international scrutiny on Pakistan’s conduct.
