A massive cloudburst struck the Karligarh Sahastradhara area of Dehradun, Uttarakhand, on Monday night, leading to extensive damage. Flash floods, triggered by continuous heavy rainfall, ravaged homes, shops, and hotels. The repercussions of the cloudburst extended beyond Sahastradhara, with debris reaching near the IT Park in Dehradun and subsequently raising the water level of the Song River. The local administration announced a holiday for all schools, from Class 1 to 12, on Tuesday, September 16. The India Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Dehradun, forecasting exceptionally heavy showers accompanied by thunderstorms and strong winds. Rivers like Tamsa, Chandrabhaga, and Sahastradhara overflowed their banks. Videos depicted significant debris accumulation, up to 2 feet deep, in the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Shivalinga complex. The bridge near Fun Valley and Uttarakhand Dental College on the Dehradun–Haridwar National Highway also suffered severe damage.

A second monsoon disaster has struck Jammu and Kashmir during the pilgrimage season, following the Kishtwar cloudburst on August 14th. On Wednesday, rescue teams recovered an additional 28 bodies from a landslide site along the trek to the Vaishno Devi shrine. This grim discovery brought the total number of fatalities from Tuesday’s landslides and flash floods in Reasi and Doda to 38. The majority of the victims at Ardhkuwari in Reasi were pilgrims hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Punjab. Initially, six deaths were reported at the site, with at least 20 others sustaining injuries as a result of the landslide. The Lieutenant Governor, Manoj Sinha, has announced ex gratia payments of Rs 9 lakh each to the families of the landslide victims. Additionally, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has sanctioned Rs 4 lakh each for the families of the 11 individuals from his state who perished in the Reasi landslide. Former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah raised questions regarding why district officials did not halt the pilgrims’ progress on the Vaishno Devi route amid adverse weather conditions. He expressed his sorrow and questioned the lack of protective measures for the pilgrims. Lieutenant Governor Sinha provided briefings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, updating them on the flood situation and the Union territory’s preparedness for evacuation and relief operations.

Jammu and Kashmir is facing the devastating consequences of torrential rainfall, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue severe weather alerts, including warnings for potential landslides and cloudbursts. The region has endured relentless downpours over the past 24 hours, resulting in at least four fatalities in Doda district and significant property damage across the Jammu region. The district administration in Doda is actively involved in rescue and relief operations, addressing the widespread impact on residential structures and other properties. Chief Minister Omar Abdullah convened an emergency meeting to assess the situation and announced his plans to visit Jammu to oversee the ground operations, emphasizing the critical need for increased vigilance and preparedness. The ongoing adverse weather conditions have led to the closure of the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH-44) due to landslides, flash floods, and rockfalls, along with the closure of schools in Jammu as a precautionary measure. The Tawi Bridge from the Bikram Chowk side is also closed for traffic, with diversions in place. The IMD has issued orange and yellow alerts for several districts, warning of further flash floods, landslides, and rising river levels, with forecasts predicting continued heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in several areas. Authorities are urging residents, especially in low-lying and hilly areas, to exercise extreme caution as intermittent showers persist. Rescue teams, including police, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and civil defense personnel, have been deployed to assist affected families. The Jammu and Kashmir Board of School Education (JKBOSE) postponed the scheduled 10th and 11th-class exams due to the inclement weather.

Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa experienced a devastating loss of life within a 48-hour period, with flash floods triggered by heavy monsoon rainfall claiming the lives of approximately 344 individuals. Rescue teams continued their efforts to sift through mud and debris on Saturday. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) recorded 324 deaths in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, with additional fatalities reported in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK) and Pakistan-occupied Gilgit-Baltistan (PoGB). At least 137 people sustained injuries as homes collapsed and floodwaters swept away residents, livestock, and vehicles. The provincial government declared six districts – Buner, Bajaur, Swat, Shangla, Mansehra, and Battagram – as disaster-stricken due to the widespread destruction. Thousands of homes were destroyed, and major roads, bridges, and link routes were washed away, severely complicating relief and rescue operations. Heavy rainfall, landslides, and washed-out roads severely hampered rescue efforts, particularly the transportation of heavy machinery and ambulances. In some areas, workers faced long walks to reach disaster sites. Efforts focused on evacuating survivors, although few were relocating due to the deaths of relatives or loved ones trapped in the debris. Approximately 2,000 personnel were deployed for rescue operations, with officials cautioning that more victims might remain trapped under rubble in remote areas. In Shangla district alone, 37 deaths were confirmed, with several others still missing. Torrential flooding, landslides, and lightning strikes injured hundreds, destroyed homes, and displaced entire communities. Eleven fatalities occurred in PoJK, nine in PoGB, and five in Bajaur district, including those from a government helicopter that crashed during a relief mission due to inclement weather on Friday.

Devastating flash floods, triggered by torrential rainfall, have ravaged northwest Pakistan, leading to widespread destruction and a tragic loss of life. The disaster has claimed the lives of over 300 people in a single day, with the remote mountainous regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bearing the brunt of the devastation. The relentless downpour, characterized by cloud bursts, flash floods, lightning strikes, and landslides, marks the deadliest event of this year’s monsoon season. The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) reported a staggering number of fatalities and continues to assess the full extent of the damage.

Further complicating the situation, a rescue helicopter crashed during a mission in the northern part of the country, resulting in the loss of five crew members. The helicopter was carrying relief supplies to the flood-affected areas when it went down in bad weather. In the wake of the disaster, the government has declared a one-day mourning period. Rescue operations are ongoing, with teams working tirelessly to evacuate stranded individuals and provide aid to those affected by the floods.
