From the glittering 80s and 90s to today’s streaming dominance, Subhash Ghai has witnessed and influenced every phase of Hindi cinema’s metamorphosis. The showman, known for blockbusters that blended grandeur with heartfelt drama, opened up about his career and industry transformations in a candid interview.

His tryst with films started in the late 1960s at Pune’s prestigious film institute. There, Ghai devoured world cinema alongside acting training, laying the groundwork for his success. Post-graduation, he deliberately paced his ascent: acting for three years, scripting next, then directing. ‘You must grasp the industry’s every layer to master it,’ he advised.

Ghai’s empire grew impressively—he helmed nearly two dozen films, floated his production company on the bourse, dabbled in distribution, and built cinema chains. This all-encompassing experience fueled his latest venture: a dedicated film academy.

‘The school bridges the gap for wide-eyed newcomers,’ Ghai said. ‘Over 2-3 years, students network with pros, practice relentlessly, and emerge industry-ready.’ It’s his way of giving back to the dream factory that shaped him.

Delving into cinematic shifts, Ghai observed that films evolve with society. ’80s-90s tales suited those times’ sensibilities. Now, aware audiences crave innovative narratives, reshaping storytelling styles.’

Embracing the digital wave, he hailed OTT and web series as game-changers. ‘Cinema isn’t solitary anymore; diverse platforms spotlight new talents, offering endless storytelling avenues.’ Ghai’s insights paint a picture of an industry more inclusive and dynamic than ever.
