In a pulsating IPL 2026 encounter at Chennai, Delhi Capitals’ fielding frailties proved costly as they fell 23 runs short of Chennai Super Kings’ 213-run target. Skipper Axar Patel didn’t mince words, declaring sloppy fielding as the match-winner.

Electing to bowl first, DC watched helplessly as CSK posted 212/2. Sanju Samson’s masterful unbeaten 115 from 56 deliveries lit up the MA Chidambaram Stadium, complemented by Ayush Mhatre’s 59 (retired out).

DC’s reply crumbled to 189. Pathum Nissanka’s 41 provided stability, and Tristan Stubbs’ explosive 60 off 38 balls offered hope. But Jamie Overton’s 4/18 and Anshul Kamboj’s 3-fer derailed the chase.

Axar dissected the loss: ‘Good powerplay, but middle-order wickets tumbled post-powerplay. Fielding let us down massively – that’s the key difference.’

He elaborated, ‘Wickets in pairs made it tough. Momentum dipped. Batsmen fought, but without sharp fielding, 213 was always going to be tricky.’

Credit where due: ‘Bowlers were outstanding, holding CSK under 215 on a flat track. Missed fielding chances were game-changers.’

With two losses in four, DC holds fourth place. CSK’s first win ends a skid, boosting them to ninth.
