Chess grandmaster Kirill Shevchenko has received a three-year ban from all FIDE-rated competitions and has had his grandmaster title revoked due to a cheating scandal. Although a one-year portion of the ban is suspended, this suspension is contingent on his future conduct. The ruling signifies a serious stance against cheating within the chess community. The ban, effective from October 19, 2024, to October 18, 2026, was imposed by FIDE. The revocation of his grandmaster title is effective immediately. The FIDE Ethics and Disciplinary Commission (EDC) initially made a decision on March 15, 2025, imposing the three-year suspension, though the title revocation came later. Shevchenko appealed the initial decision, and FIDE’s Fair Play Commission cross-appealed, leading to a re-examination of the case.
The incident occurred at the Spanish Team Championship in October 2024. A mobile phone was discovered in a private restroom with a note, raising suspicions. Tournament authorities investigated, and their inquiry led to Shevchenko, who was subsequently disqualified. Two of his opponents, GM Francisco Vallejo Pons and GM Bassem Amin, alerted the arbiters about Shevchenko’s extended absences from the board, prompting a deeper investigation. While Shevchenko admitted to hiding a phone in the restroom, he denied using it to access chess engines during games. However, FIDE’s report indicates he later admitted to using the Lichess application on the phone, contributing to the disciplinary action. This case marks a significant instance of cheating in recent chess history, given Shevchenko’s age (22) and high ranking.

Nineteen-year-old Divya Deshmukh has etched her name in chess history by clinching the 2025 FIDE Women’s World Cup title, becoming the first Indian woman to achieve this feat. In a dramatic all-Indian final held in Baku, she defeated the experienced Koneru Humpy with a score of 1.5-0.5 in the rapid tie-breaks. The classical games over the weekend showcased intense competition, with both players displaying exceptional preparation and composure. In the opening game, Divya, playing with white, established a dominant position, although Humpy fought back. The second game was more evenly matched, with Divya recovering from a challenging situation to secure a draw. The tie-breaks, however, proved to be Divya’s moment, with Humpy making crucial mistakes under time pressure. Despite entering the match as an underdog against Humpy, a two-time World Rapid Champion and world No. 5 in classical chess, Divya remained composed and emerged victorious. This victory marks a remarkable rise for the Nagpur native, who previously won the World Junior Championship in 2024 and contributed to India’s success at the Chess Olympiad in Budapest, where she also secured an individual gold medal. This World Cup win not only solidifies Divya’s place in history but also earns her India’s 88th Grandmaster title, making her the fourth Indian woman to hold the title.

The Norway Chess tournament’s unforgettable hand-smash scene has spawned countless memes. Initially, sports reels mimicking other board games like Snakes and Ladders emerged. This evolved into parodies, including humorous takes on evading ticket checkers. Now, Indian Grandmaster Pentala Harikrishna joins the fun, humorously referencing the infamous fist smash in a FIDE interview. This gesture playfully acknowledges the dramatic moment when world No. 1 Magnus Carlsen reacted after losing to Gukesh, who became the world champion. Harikrishna’s playful imitation echoes the viral moment. Anish Giri also humorously mirrored the fist smash in a previous FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Teams Championships, further highlighting the meme’s impact. Harikrishna’s teammates even voted him as the best joke-teller, showing his ability to make people laugh.
