Hosp whodunit: Charges fly. Not Israel, says US
Express News Service
NEW DELHI/GAZA/TEL AVIV : The explosion at a Gaza hospital on Tuesday was not done by Israel but by its foes, US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday. “I was deeply saddened and outraged by the explosion of the hospital in Gaza yesterday, and based on what I’ve seen, it appears as though it was done by the other team, not you,” Biden told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a meeting in Tel Aviv.
While firmly backing Israel in its war on Hamas, Biden also shared his concerns about the rising civilian casualties. He said Israel can draw lessons from the US campaigns after the 9/11 terror attacks. “Justice must be done. But I caution this: While you feel that rage, don’t be consumed by it. After 9/11, we were enraged… While we sought justice and got justice, we also made mistakes,” the US president added.
After the explosion at the Gaza hospital on Tuesday, Hamas officials had claimed at least 500 people died and blamed it on an Israeli air strikes. Israel Defence Forces, however, denied the claim and said their analysis showed the hospital was hit by a misfired rocket launched by the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, the second largest militant group in Gaza after Hamas. For its part, the Islamic Jihad denied any role in the attack, saying it wasn’t operating from there.
Israel also released drone footage of the scene of the explosion to show that there was no impact crater from any missile or bomb. An Israeli air strike would have created a huge crater, it explained. While Hamas and Israel are blaming each other for the hospital attack, world leaders expressed horror over the turn of events. Expressing anguish over the ongoing conflict and civilian casualties, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was deeply shocked at the tragic loss of lives in the hosptial blast. “Our heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims, and prayers for speedy recovery of those injured. Civilian casualties in the ongoing conflict are a matter of serious and continuing concern. Those involved should be held responsible,” he said in a post on X.

By PTI
GURUGRAM: Three more people, who were hospitalised with severe burns in the explosion of a firecracker at a home in Gurugram last week, have died, pushing the toll to six in the incident, police said on Friday.
Five days ago, three people had succumbed to injuries in an explosion in a house in Nakhrola village. With this, all six injured in the October 12 explosion have died, police said.
According to the police, Tanuj (14) and Vishnu Kant (40) succumbed on Friday morning at a hospital in Delhi while Satish (40) died on Wednesday night.
Earlier, the house owner, Bhagwan Das alias Kala (40), his son Manish (20) and daughter Chhavi (10) died on October 16.
Satish was a relative of Kala while Tanuj was his son. Vishnu Kant was the driver with Satish, said police.
Six people, including four members of a family and their one relative and his driver, were seriously injured after a huge explosion at the house on October 12 afternoon. An FIR was registered against house owner Das at Kherki Daula police station.
According to the police, Das used to supply firecrackers for use in weddings and other functions.
“All the injured were critical as they had more than 90 per cent burn injuries and died during treatment in the duration of nine days,” said inspector Rajendra Singh, the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kherki Daula police station.

IIT (ISM) study discover measures to prevent fire and explosion in mines and ensure better safety
Express News Service
RANCHI: In a first of its kind imitative, IIT (ISM) mining engineering research unit has discovered measures to prevent fire and explosion in mines and ensure better safety. Associate professor of mining engineering department IIT (ISM), Devi Prasad Mishra has conducted the research on pulverised coal that can help to improve the safety of coalmines from spontaneous combustion and explosion, as wellas risk management of coalmines.
The outcome of research titled ‘Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Pulverized Coal and their interrelations- a spontaneous combustion and explosion perspective’ can also have applications with regard to safety and risk management of process industries and utilities sector dealing with pulverized coal.
“Not only in coal mines, but the study will also prove to be helpful to the industries and utility sectors that deal with pulverized coal. It will strengthen their safety and help in the risk management process,” said Mishra. It was found during the study that with a decrease in particle size, its surface area increases which enables it to interact with oxygen, further increasing its combustibility and explosivity, he added.
The research findings helped the team to get knowledge about the particle size, exposed specific surface area and gas adsorption characteristics of coal of various particle sizes that in turn facilitated the mine management to take appropriate measures to prevent the occurrence of spontaneous combustion, minefires and explosions in coal mines.
The objective, according to Mishra, was to study the spontaneous combustion susceptibility of coal with particle size variation and exclusivity. The study will also give direction to further research in the field, he said. “Now, we will go to the application part and try to adopt techniques so that fire and explosions could be prevented in coal mines. For example, there is an issue of Jharia Coal Mines in Dhanbad; we will try to find out the material or chemical to put into it to check further spread of fire,” said Mishra.
In order to prevent fire and explosion in mines, suitable measures have to be taken to reduce dust so that they do not get in contact with oxygen, he added. Fire is a very common phenomenon in underground mines everywhere.
“This research can be extended to coarser mine size coals, which are generally found in goaf (mined out) areas of underground mines, coal stacks and waste dumps and prone to spontaneous combustion” further opined the Associate Professor while highlighting the need for further research in the area.
Elaborating on the advantages of the research Mishra said, “This unique study which led to a better understanding of the physio-chemical characteristics of pulverized coal also revealed the variations of bulk density, specific surface area and gas adsorption characteristics of coal with particle size”.
“The relationship developed in this research can help to determine the bulk density and specific surface area of pulverized coal of known particle size” summed up Mishra, adding that they visited several mines across the country during the course of research to analyze the pulverized coal.

Mohali explosion: Raids conducted across Punjab, no arrest yet
By PTI
CHANDIGARH: The Punjab Police on Wednesday said it has conducted raids across the state and rounded up suspects for questioning in connection with the explosion at its intelligence wing headquarters in Mohali.
Police said they are examining the CCTV footage to trace the people involved in the incident.
In an audacious attack on Monday, a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) was fired at the third floor of the highly-guarded building in Mohali’s Sector 77 at 7.45 pm, which sent the state in a high alert mode.
“Raids have been conducted across the state and possible suspects are being rounded up and questioned. CCTV footages are being extensively analysed to find out about the suspects involved,” the state police said in a statement. “Forensic experts are being roped in to further develop on clues regarding the case,” the statement said.
In a CCTV footage of the grenade attack, regular traffic movement could be seen on the road in front of the building of the intelligence wing headquarters.
Suddenly, there was a flash of light when a car passed through the road, suggesting that the RPG was fired from that car, as per the footage that surfaced on Wednesday. The video footage also shakes with the impact of the blast. However, it was not visible in the footage who fired the RPG.
Meanwhile, police have detained a man from Tarn Taran district in connection with the Mohali explosion, sources said on Wednesday.
Nishan Singh, a resident of Kulla village, will be questioned for his alleged role in the Mohali explosion incident, said the sources.
Singh is already facing several criminal cases, including one related to attempt to murder and another under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The police on Tuesday had said that it had recovered the launcher used in the attack.
The Mohali police had on Monday termed the explosion at the headquarters as minor. Police are suspecting the involvement of gangster-turned-terrorist Harvinder Singh Rinda, who is believed to be in Pakistan, in the incident.
Rinda has been taking the help of local gangsters to carry out anti-national activities here, police sources said. His name came up when a terror plot was foiled recently with the arrest of four suspected Pakistan-linked terrorists in Haryana’s Karnal.
Rinda’s involvement was also detected in a hand-grenade attack at the Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) office in Nawanshahr last month.
In his statement after the attack, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had promised strictest punishment to those trying to spoil the state’s atmosphere.
Mann, who had held a meeting with the Director General of Police V K Bhawra and other senior officials on Tuesday, had said that nobody would be allowed to disturb the peaceful atmosphere of Punjab.
A case under the relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), and the Explosives Act was lodged at Mohali’s Sohana police station after the incident.
Punjab Police chief Bhawra had earlier said that a projectile had hit the building and the explosive used in it seems to be TNT (trinitrotoluene).
