Elon Musk’s electric car company, Tesla, launched the Model Y in India on July 15, 2025. The company commenced deliveries towards the end of September, approximately two months after the launch. By the end of September, Tesla had delivered a total of 60 Model Y units to Indian customers. Although this number may seem small, it represents a promising start for Tesla in India, given that it’s their first car in the country.

According to vehicle portal data, BMW sold 307 electric vehicles during the same period, while Mercedes-Benz sold 95, and Volvo sold 22. The delivery of Tesla’s 60 units, priced around ₹60 lakh (ex-showroom), positions it in the luxury EV market, competing with European brands.

The Model Y is available in two variants:

* Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) with a range of 500 km (according to WLTP)
* Long Range RWD with a range of 622 km

Currently, the company has only started delivering the RWD variant, while deliveries of the Long Range model are expected in the coming months. The Model Y’s starting price is ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Tesla initiated bookings for the Model Y in July and has received over 600 orders. However, this is slightly less than the company’s initial expectations. Tesla initially aimed to import 2,500 units annually but, considering the slower demand, has revised its plan to limit it to 350 to 500 units per year. The company is likely to accelerate the delivery of the Tesla Model Y around Diwali.

Tata Motors, a renowned Indian automotive company, is preparing to reintroduce its iconic SUV, the Tata Sierra, to the Indian market. This vehicle was highly popular in the 1990s, but was eventually discontinued. The company plans to launch it with a fresh design and advanced features at the BMGE 2025 event. Notably, the electric vehicle (EV) version of the Sierra will debut first, followed by petrol and diesel variants.

Based on recent testing models, the design is expected to closely resemble the concept model displayed last year. It will feature a wide horizontal grille, sleek headlights, and a full-width LED light bar. The SUV’s rear will have a strong bumper, sleek taillamps, and a roof spoiler, contributing to its attractive appearance. It is anticipated to include a panoramic sunroof with a black roof, creating a floating roof effect.

While Tata Motors has not released official specifications, it is estimated that the EV version will feature a dual-motor setup similar to the Harrier EV, enabling all-wheel drive (AWD) capability and a range exceeding 500 km. The petrol variant may include a new 1.5-liter turbo engine, producing approximately 168 PS of power and 280 Nm of torque. The diesel variant is expected to have a 2.0-liter engine, delivering roughly 170 PS of power and 350 Nm of torque. Transmission choices may include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed torque converter automatic gearbox.

The new Sierra’s interior will be completely modern, potentially featuring a triple-screen setup with a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch driver display. Furthermore, the SUV might incorporate Level-2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, ventilated seats, and other premium features.

According to reports, the Tata Sierra could be launched in the Indian market in early 2026. The company has showcased it at dealer events and has been frequently spotted testing prototypes, indicating that the SUV’s development is nearly complete.

The narrative of electric vehicles (EVs) in India has primarily been confined to metropolitan areas such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Hyderabad. However, recent developments suggest a shifting landscape. Mahindra & Mahindra’s experience indicates that the next surge in EV adoption in India will originate from Tier-2 cities.

Tier-2 Cities Emerge as EV Hubs

According to reports, Nalini Kanta Gollagunta, CEO of Mahindra’s automotive sector, highlights that cities like Bhubaneswar, Indore, Jaipur, and Meerut are emerging as new centers of EV demand. Smaller cities offer the advantage of readily available dedicated parking, simplifying the setup of home charging stations. Moreover, the increasing prevalence of short-distance daily commutes and improvements in highway infrastructure are accelerating EV adoption. Many customers in these areas fall within the price bracket exceeding 20 lakh rupees, making the transition to electric cars feasible without significant obstacles.

Mahindra’s Three-Tier Strategy

For Mahindra, this shift reinforces its EV strategy. The company secured a 41% revenue market share in the EV segment during Q1. This success is built upon its three-tier product approach.

Pack 3: Premium segment (e.g., BE 6 and XEV 9e), launched to strengthen the company’s EV identity.
Pack 2: Mid-range EVs, expanding the customer base and increasing sales from 3,500 to 4,000 units per month.
Pack 1: Entry-level EVs, tailored for first-time EV buyers.

The Premium Formula

Mahindra has focused on positioning EVs as premium products rather than merely affordable options. Pack 3 models have successfully presented EVs as desirable products to customers. Now, Pack 2 maintains a premium touch while remaining affordable, particularly for Tier-2 cities where enthusiasm for EV adoption is growing. Pack 1 is expected to attract a broader customer base in the future.

This formula is also evident in its SUV lineup. While the Scorpio is a volume driver, the XUV700 and Thar have resonated with younger demographics. The 3XO surpassed the 1 lakh unit mark within a year of its launch, demonstrating a balance between premium and mass-market appeal.

Challenges Remain

Although opportunities are substantial, challenges persist. Reduced GST on larger ICE SUVs could narrow the price gap between EVs and ICE vehicles. However, Mahindra believes that with the inclusion of features and tax benefits, EVs are already priced comparably to ICE vehicles in 60% of the market.
