A recent defense agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan has ignited a new discussion regarding India’s relations with the Gulf countries. This agreement stipulates that an attack on one country will be considered an attack on the other, potentially including the use of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. While Pakistan’s Defense Minister clarified that Saudi Arabia would not receive nuclear protection under the deal, the agreement has sparked questions about India’s most reliable and steadfast allies in the region. The Gulf nations, comprising Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iraq, Bahrain, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and Oman, share borders with the Arabian Gulf (Persian Gulf). India’s historical, cultural, energy, and trade ties with these countries are long-standing, with a significant Indian diaspora residing there. Saudi Arabia stands as a traditional partner for India, with deepening relations across energy, trade, investment, and security over the past two decades. The current presence of approximately 2.6 million Indians in Saudi Arabia strengthens this bond. The UAE is perhaps India’s most significant partner, with nearly 4.3 million Indians, representing about 35% of the total population. Trade between India and the UAE reached $28.4 billion in 2021-22, with projections estimating it could reach $100 billion by 2026. The UAE also accounts for approximately 27% of India’s total remittances. Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman also have significant Indian populations and strong relationships with India, contributing to their economic and social development. Iraq is vital for India’s oil needs, importing 22% of its total crude oil from Iraq. India’s relationship with the Gulf nations rests on three pillars: the Indian diaspora, remittances, and energy and trade. With nearly 8.9 million Indians in the Gulf countries, India receives the world’s highest remittances annually, with over half originating from these nations. Furthermore, India fulfills 60% of its oil needs and conducts $154 billion in trade with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC). In return, India supplies 85% of the food and grain needs of the Gulf countries, including rice, spices, seafood, and meat. Indian travelers also represent a large customer base for Gulf airlines. While the new defense agreement between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan is a concern for India, India’s relations with the Gulf countries are deeply rooted and multifaceted. While Saudi Arabia is crucial for energy and political cooperation, the UAE is India’s closest partner in terms of expatriates and trade. Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman are also reliable friends because of their significant Indian communities and economic collaboration. The UAE and Saudi Arabia appear to be the leading allies.

A recent Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, Qatar, included the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), comprising 57 Muslim countries. The summit was convened after Israel targeted Hamas…

A recent Arab-Islamic summit in Doha, Qatar, included the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), comprising 57 Muslim countries. The summit was convened after Israel targeted Hamas leaders in Qatar with airstrikes on September 9th. Despite numerous OIC meetings, including three in the past year, criticism of Israel has remained largely symbolic. A key reason for Israel’s perceived lack of fear stems from its strategic agreements with several Muslim nations.

Azerbaijan is a major oil supplier to Israel, providing 60% of its oil needs and signed a gas exploration agreement in March 2025. In October 2023, during the Hamas-Israel war, Azerbaijan played a crucial role in fulfilling Israel’s energy requirements when ports were closed.

The Abraham Accords, signed in September 2020, saw the UAE become the first Arab nation to recognize Israel, followed by Bahrain, Morocco, and Sudan. Bilateral trade between the UAE and Israel increased in 2024, with Israel sourcing 10% of its petroleum products from the UAE. The two nations have fostered extensive cooperation in tourism, education, health, trade, and security. However, the UAE has cautioned that the Abraham Accords could be jeopardized by plans for West Bank occupation following the Gaza war.

The natural gas agreement between Egypt and Israel is critical for both countries’ energy security. Gas from Israel’s Leviathan and Tamar gas fields is transported through Egyptian LNG terminals to Europe. The Dolphin agreement, established in 2018, allows Israel to receive natural gas from Egypt, generating billions of dollars annually. Both nations are working towards becoming an energy hub through gas pipeline infrastructure.

Saudi Arabia faces challenges from the Houthi rebels, who have been active in Yemen since 2014 and regularly launch attacks on Saudi Arabia. A weakened Israel could embolden Iran and strengthen the Houthi group. Saudi Arabia views Israel’s presence as a deterrent to Iranian expansionism. Houthi attacks on Saudi oil depots have impacted the global oil market. Israel conducts ongoing attacks on Houthi rebels in Yemen. The absence of Israel could exacerbate Saudi Arabia’s difficulties.

Turkey, despite severing trade ties with Israel due to the Gaza war in May 2024, still maintains an active embassy in Tel Aviv. Trade continues behind the scenes, facilitated by Turkish companies via third countries like Georgia and Armenia. This trade reached $1.2 billion in 2024. Turkey, a NATO member, has long-standing defense ties with Israel, and has a Jewish population of 26,000. While the Erdogan government publicly supports Palestine, it maintains relations with Israel for commercial interests.

The United States plays a complex role in the establishment of relations between Pakistan and Israel. While the US desires greater recognition of Israel by Muslim countries, a significant portion of the Pakistani population supports Palestine. Pakistan, reliant on US economic and military aid, faces a dilemma. It faces US pressure concerning IMF loans and aid, compounded by the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Public opposition within Pakistan could result if Israel is recognized, hence, Pakistan has not made any decision thus far.

A significant development is underway in Bihar, promising a new era of industrial advancement and job creation. Within the next three years, the Bhagalpur district will witness a major transformation…

A significant development is underway in Bihar, promising a new era of industrial advancement and job creation. Within the next three years, the Bhagalpur district will witness a major transformation in its power supply infrastructure. The state’s largest power plant, a 2400-megawatt facility, is set to be constructed in Pirpainti, Bhagalpur, with an investment of 21,000 crore rupees. The plant will span 1020 acres, significantly bolstering Bihar’s energy security.

This project, entrusted to Adani Power, is expected to generate thousands of employment opportunities within the district. Energy Secretary has mandated the completion of the project within three years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is anticipated to lay the foundation stone on September 15th in Purnia, with preparations in full swing.

The plant’s strategic location, near the Ganga River to the north, the ancient Vikramshila University and Bateshwar Sthan to the south, the Jharkhand hills to the east, and the Rajmahal coal mine to the south, offers robust connectivity and favorable geographical conditions. The area benefits from ongoing railway projects, including a route from Pirpainti to Hansdiha via Godda and another connecting Katihar to Gorakhpur and Guwahati, making it historically significant. The project site is conveniently located just one kilometer from Pirpainti railway station.

This thermal power plant will provide employment for a large number of people. Initially, it could generate employment for 50,000 people. Furthermore, it will promote the establishment of food processing units and cement factories. This represents a major investment in Eastern India. The Chief Secretary of the Energy Department and Managing Director inspected the project site and instructed officials to complete the pairing work by October and hand it over to the Adani Group. The project is expected to be a milestone for Bihar, generating employment for the people. The DM, Dr. Naval Kishore Chaudhary, has stated that the project will bring significant economic changes and provide large-scale employment opportunities for local residents.

Former US President Donald Trump stated that he had heard India might cease purchasing oil from Russia, calling it a ‘good step’ if true. This statement came after Washington imposed a 25% tariff on Indian imports due to the country’s ongoing trade with Russia, including the purchase of crude oil and military equipment. Trump indicated that additional penalties against India were under consideration.

During an interview, Trump responded to a query about potential penalties and a possible conversation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Earlier, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) clarified that India’s energy procurement decisions are based on national interests and market dynamics. The MEA added that it wasn’t aware of any specific developments regarding Indian oil companies stopping imports from Russia. These remarks followed criticisms from the United States, including Trump and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, regarding India’s import of discounted Russian crude oil despite Western sanctions. Trump had previously criticized India’s economic ties with Russia, labeling both economies as ‘dead,’ while later suggesting that negotiations with India were underway.

Chhattisgarh is not merely the ‘Rice Bowl’ of India; it is also a state rich in mineral resources, vital for the nation’s energy and industrial needs. This was emphasized by Raipur MP and senior BJP leader Brijmohan Agrawal during a meeting of the Coal and Mines Ministry’s advisory committee in Hyderabad. The meeting included Union Coal and Mines Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of State Satish Chandra Dubey, committee members, and senior ministry officials.

The first session of the meeting focused on ‘Beyond Mining: Mine Closure and Reuse,’ while the second session discussed ‘Mineral Exploration in India.’ Agrawal presented the issues and potential of Chhattisgarh’s mineral sector, highlighting the need for sustainable practices and responsible resource management.

Agrawal advocated for the safety and reuse of closed mines. He proposed filling abandoned mines with fly ash and overburden material to prevent accidents, ensuring the safe disposal of waste. He suggested that fly ash from NTPC plants be used to fill closed mines of SECL, with payments on a per-ton basis. He cited a recent accident in Dhamda, Durg district, as an example of the dangers posed by neglected mines. He proposed that land filled with fly ash be leased to farmers for agricultural use.

He also expressed concern over coal theft and the need for data monitoring systems in every mine, along with the operation of all weighbridges under an authorized body.

Agrawal suggested that tree planting be made mandatory in mining areas to offset forest damage. He proposed that every mine area should have basic facilities like schools, ITIs, coaching centers, hospitals, and water treatment plants. He also recommended that CSR funds be extended to Coal Advisory Committee members to enable their active participation in regional development.

During the second session, he stressed the need for serious efforts towards mineral exploration in Chhattisgarh. He mentioned the rich potential of the state, including the Paylikhand area of Gariaband district, known for its diamond deposits, and the presence of diamonds in Tumla village of Jashpur district. He highlighted the availability of natural diamonds, alexandrite, garnet, beryl, quartz, amethyst, and the strong possibility of lithium and other mineral reserves. He emphasized that the use of state resources should prioritize local youth employment, regional development, and national interests while maintaining a balance between development and environmental protection.

He demanded the establishment of a Mining Bureau in Chhattisgarh and the opening of regional offices of the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the National Mineral Development Corporation (NMDC) for the scientific and transparent exploitation of the state’s mineral potential. The meeting concluded with the decision to make closed mines safe and environmentally reusable, and a letter would be sent to the state government to take concrete steps in this direction.
