The Himachal Pradesh government is preparing to approach the Supreme Court to contest a High Court directive that mandates the widespread removal of trees, including fruit-bearing ones, from encroached forest lands. Revenue, Horticulture, and Tribal Development Minister Jagat Singh Negi expressed strong opposition to the mass felling, labeling it as environmentally damaging and in conflict with ecological conservation principles. He emphasized that the government is complying with eviction orders but finds the destruction of mature trees, especially apple orchards, unjustifiable. The government is concerned about potential environmental consequences, including soil erosion and flooding, especially in light of recent heavy monsoons and landslides. The minister also provided updates on restoration efforts following recent severe weather events, including the reopening of major highways and improvements in power and water supply. He also addressed the Shrikhand Mahadev Pilgrim Death and ordered an inquiry.

A dispute erupted in Gumla, Jharkhand, when municipal council personnel attempted to remove vegetable shops from the Jashpur Road, adjacent to NH-78. The ensuing confrontation turned the vegetable market into a battleground for about half an hour. The situation escalated when a municipal council employee allegedly struck a female vegetable vendor and her child with a bamboo stick during the anti-encroachment drive. This action triggered outrage among the vendors, who retaliated by attacking the municipal council staff. The police intervened to protect the employees. In response to the bulldozer action, the irate shopkeepers blocked the Ranchi-Chhattisgarh road near the Bengali Club on Jashpur Road, causing a traffic jam from 12 noon to 2 pm. The road was cleared after SDPO Suresh Prasad and Inspector Mahendra Karmali intervened and persuaded the protestors. A subsequent meeting was held at the police station involving the municipal council and vegetable vendors to resolve the issue.

The High Court has taken a strong stance on the increasing number of road accidents in Chhattisgarh. A division bench comprising Chief Justice Ramesh Sinha and Justice Ravindra Kumar Agrawal, during a hearing on a public interest litigation (PIL) on Wednesday, expressed displeasure over liquor shops operating along the highways and encroachment by roadside eateries. The court’s concern stems from the unsafe conditions created by these establishments, which contribute to accidents. The court has issued notices to NTPC and SECL, seeking their response on the matter.
