In a bid to ensure peaceful assembly elections, the Election Commission has greenlit the largest-ever security deployment in West Bengal: 2,400 companies comprising CAPF, IRB, and other armed police from various states. This comes as the state braces for two crucial voting phases on April 23 and 29.

The decision was announced late Friday, highlighting the ECI’s proactive stance against violence witnessed in recent polls. Currently, 480 CAPF units are already on the ground. After the final phase ends on April 29, 200 companies will secure electoral assets like EVMs and strong rooms through counting day.

To curb post-poll chaos—reminiscent of 2021 and 2024 incidents—another 500 CAPF companies will linger until further orders. The balance of 1,700 units will return home post-polling.

West Bengal’s administration has been tasked with crafting a comprehensive deployment strategy, covering everything from transport to housing, in tandem with security agencies. CRPF will oversee CAPF logistics, led by IG Shalbh Mathur as the nodal officer.

This mammoth exercise reflects lessons learned from past unrest, aiming to shield democracy from intimidation. With elections around the corner, all eyes are on how this force will be distributed across volatile districts. The ECI’s message is clear: no room for lawlessness.

Stakeholders hope this will boost voter confidence, particularly in areas prone to booth capturing and clashes. A secure poll process could set a benchmark for other states facing similar challenges.

KOLKATA: Kolkata’s new Police Commissioner Ajay Kumar Nand moved swiftly to quell concerns on Tuesday, asserting no tensions exist between West Bengal Police and central paramilitary forces since the state assembly election schedule was unveiled last week.

Speaking a day after assuming office, Nand highlighted the structured deployment of central forces for indirect assistance during the elections. ‘Deployments happen in phases with prior approvals,’ he explained. ‘Clear directives prevent any clashes, and communication channels via nodal officers are well-established.’

Dismissing accusations of poor coordination, he stressed adherence to predefined timelines. Nand also assured that upcoming polls will be free, fair, and secure, with Kolkata Police dedicated to citizen protection.

Recent complaints, from poster vandalism to the altercation near Minister Shashi Panja’s home on March 15, are being probed rigorously. ‘No central troops were in the vicinity then,’ Nand noted, countering delays in response claims. ‘Our teams are equipped to manage law and order swiftly, monitoring rallies and gatherings proactively.’

With central forces’ presence minimal statewide for now, Nand vowed not to falter in his leadership role. This firm stance aims to build confidence as political activities intensify, promising impartial enforcement of electoral norms.

Bangladesh’s general elections are in full swing today, with voting live on 299 parliamentary seats from 42,779 polling stations. Gates opened at 7:30 AM and will close at 4:30 PM, after which counting begins to herald a new era in governance.

Held 18 months post the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s long-standing Awami League regime amid widespread demonstrations, these polls double as a referendum on sweeping 84-point reforms. The voter base stands at 127.7 million, including a robust 44% under 37 years old, poised to influence outcomes significantly.

The Dhaka Tribune highlights a surge in female voters: 62.88 million women registered, featuring 2.7 million newcomers compared to 1.87 million men. This contrasts sharply with candidate diversity, where women number only 83—mere 4% of the field.

To thwart disruptions, authorities have mobilized 958,000 security forces across the country, with extra deployments in volatile areas. An additional 100,000 soldiers stand ready to maintain order and facilitate peaceful voting.

Banned from participating, Awami League cedes ground to BNP, which leads alongside a Jamaat-e-Islami alliance. Tarique Rahman, Khaleda Zia’s 60-year-old son returning after exile, tops predictions with pledges for employment, stability, and expression freedoms.

This election isn’t just about seats; it’s a referendum on reform and resilience. With youth and women at the forefront, Bangladesh edges toward potential transformation, under the watchful eyes of its massive security apparatus.

Tight security blankets Telangana as municipal elections grip its cities and towns on this crisp Wednesday. From Hyderabad’s bustling streets to far-flung municipalities, 52.17 lakh voters are heading to polls in 123 urban bodies, covering 2,981 wards. Polling at 8,191 centers began at dawn and runs till dusk, managed by a massive SEC machinery.

With 41,773 staffers and 1,379 returning officers on duty, webcasting covers every vote cast. Commissioner Rani Kumudini’s call to action resonates: download your slip via app or site and vote. Competition is fierce with 12,944 hopefuls, prominently featuring Congress’s 2,358, BRS’s 2,478, and BJP’s 2,252 in municipalities alone.

Unopposed wins dot the landscape—nine in municipalities, two in corporations—while a somber note lingers from a BJP aspirant’s suicide, halting one ward’s polls. Seven corporations buzz with 2,225 candidates across 412 wards and 2,174 booths. DGP Reddy’s forces, bolstered by 3,000 extras, guard 1,302 critical and 1,926 vulnerable sites.

As the day progresses, officials watch turnout closely. Repoll looms Thursday if irregularities arise, counting follows Friday, and leadership polls cap it on the 16th. These elections aren’t just about wards; they’re a litmus test for state parties ahead of bigger battles. Voters, young and old, are shaping their localities’ destiny one ballot at a time.

In a bid to safeguard Nepal’s upcoming parliamentary elections, India and Nepal have decided to seal their shared border posts for 72 hours. The elections, set for March 5, will…

In a bid to safeguard Nepal’s upcoming parliamentary elections, India and Nepal have decided to seal their shared border posts for 72 hours. The elections, set for March 5, will see unprecedented security measures, including this temporary closure to thwart any external interference.

The pact was sealed during the 16th DIG-level coordination meeting between Nepal’s APF and India’s SSB in Biratnagar on Friday. The focus was on fortifying border security against elements that might disrupt the democratic exercise.

APF DIG Vishnu Prasad Bhatt revealed that Nepal proposed shutting the posts two days prior to voting, a request India accepted without hesitation. “Election day plus 72 hours – that’s the plan,” he stated, noting it’s routine protocol for both nations.

Heavy security blankets polling stations during elections, making it essential to block suspicious cross-border traffic. Beyond the closure, talks delved into combating cross-border crimes: from human smuggling and fake notes to weapons, ammo, and drugs.

India’s persistent worries about terrorists from Kashmir and Pakistan sneaking through the open border were reiterated. Other agenda items encompassed securing border markers, easing traveler flow normally, collaborative patrols, emergency response training, and people-to-people sports initiatives.

The two sides pledged to pinpoint vulnerable spots, evaluate threats, keep tabs on migrants and refugees, and ramp up inspections. This collaboration reflects the strong bilateral ties forged over decades, ensuring Nepal’s polls proceed smoothly amid regional tensions.

With the open border facilitating both trade and threats, such measures are vital. Expect intensified joint operations leading up to March 5, prioritizing voter safety and electoral fairness.

With Bangladesh’s parliamentary polls and referendum just days away on February 12, a wave of pre-election violence has prompted the US Embassy to issue a stark security alert. American citizens in the South Asian nation are warned of heightened risks from political unrest and possible militant strikes.

‘Peaceful gatherings can quickly turn violent,’ the Friday advisory cautions, pointing to vulnerabilities at rallies, voting centers, and faith-based locations like temples, churches, and mosques. The embassy’s message is clear: avoid crowds, stay aware of surroundings, and track news developments closely.

Government measures include a motorcycle ban starting February 10 and a total transport shutdown on the final two days before voting. This will limit embassy operations in Dhaka to essential services only on February 11 and 12.

Campaign trails have become battlegrounds. Since Wednesday, incidents of gunfire, stabbings, riots, and property damage have claimed lives and injured dozens across constituencies. Minority communities, particularly Hindus, have faced brutal targeted assaults. Newspapers like the Dhaka Tribune document looting of campaign offices, microphones, vehicles, and even polling station surveillance equipment.

Dozens of candidates have lodged formal complaints about assassination threats and conspiracies against them. This escalation of criminality is fueling doubts about the safety of the entire electoral process. International observers note that such turmoil could undermine public trust and participation, urging authorities to restore order ahead of the crucial vote that will shape Bangladesh’s political future.

Intelligence reports ahead of Bangladesh’s February 12 elections warn that Rohingya camps could become hubs for disruptive activities. Rejecting the Election Commission’s full lockdown idea, authorities favor a robust, layered security framework to ensure smooth voting.

The camps in Cox’s Bazar span massive areas with poor fencing and monitoring, rendering seals impossible, per Dhaka Tribune. Since the 2017 Myanmar violence, nearly a million Rohingyas have crammed into these sites, straining resources and spilling over to nearby borders, including India.

Commissioner Sanaullah’s recent call to isolate camps and bolster borders aimed to block any election meddling. Yet, a key task force meeting emphasized protection without isolation.

January 22’s intel report to the Home Ministry stressed realism: sealing is off the table. It flagged dangers like riots, bogus votes via manipulated lists, rally mobilizations, and arms proliferation among refugees.

Recommendations include urgent fixes to surveillance and walls, pre-election checkpoints, instant arrests outside camps, anti-arms sweeps, force deployments, and strict advisories to parties.

Elections face scrutiny over fraud claims, force bias, and party clashes, with 12.77 crore voters enrolled. Rohingya voter infiltration fears amplify risks.

Religion’s politicization adds fuel, as reports decry extremism’s rise in a democracy-starved environment, citing promises of heavenly rewards and Sharia pushes by candidates.

In preparation for the upcoming Ghatsila Assembly by-election in East Singhbhum district, local authorities have announced temporary traffic restrictions to ensure the safe transport of polling materials and manage vehicular flow. Heavy vehicle movement within the city will be completely prohibited on November 10th and 11th. This crucial measure aims to facilitate the smooth conduct of the electoral process.

The administrative order specifies that from 4:30 AM to 11:30 AM on November 10th, and again from 4:30 PM to 11:30 PM on November 11th, no heavy vehicles will be permitted to enter or exit the city limits. During these periods, only smaller vehicles and those associated with essential services will be allowed on the roads. This strategic traffic management is designed to prevent any disruptions.

The Traffic DSP highlighted that this arrangement is primarily to guarantee the unimpeded and secure transit of all election materials. He added that a special deployment of police personnel will be in place to prevent any congestion or disorder during the critical election period, ensuring a secure environment for voters and staff.

Residents are urged to cooperate with these directives and avoid unnecessary travel with heavy vehicles. Authorities have issued a stern warning that strict action will be taken against anyone violating these traffic regulations. The traffic control room will remain on high alert to respond swiftly to any emergencies and ensure no obstacles hinder the election proceedings.

Nepal has temporarily shut down all border crossings with India for a period of 72 hours, commencing Saturday. This stringent security measure is being implemented in anticipation of the second phase of elections in the Indian state of Bihar. Several districts situated along the shared frontier, including Sarlahi, Mahottari, and Rautahat, are participating in this border closure. Notably, the Mahottari district has completely sealed all eleven of its access points to India.

Authorities have cited security concerns related to the November 11th Bihar election as the primary reason for halting cross-border movement. Assistant Chief District Officer of Mahottari, Sanjay Kumar Pokhrel, confirmed that the border would be sealed from 6 PM on November 8th until 6 PM on November 11th. This synchronized closure is a well-established protocol during electoral processes in either nation, involving close collaboration between security forces of Nepal and India to ensure peace and order.

Local administration offices in bordering regions have been placed on high alert. A directive has been issued suspending all travel between the two countries, with exceptions made only for critical emergency situations. The second phase of the Bihar polls will cover 122 constituencies across 20 districts, with results slated for announcement on Friday. This electoral process sees over 1,300 candidates vying for seats, with a significant portion being women. Millions of eligible voters are expected to cast their ballots across thousands of polling centers.

During the upcoming Ghartshila by-election, all polling and security personnel will receive comprehensive cashless medical treatment. This was announced following a crucial meeting chaired by Deputy Commissioner Karn Satyarthi with representatives from government and private hospitals in East Singhbhum. The district administration has prioritized the health and safety of election duty staff. Hospitals are directed to ensure immediate cashless medical access in any emergency situation, regardless of whether it’s a government or private facility. The Civil Surgeon has been tasked with ensuring the availability of necessary medical resources, medicines, and medical teams within hospitals.
