Tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border took a momentary backseat as both countries declared a ceasefire for Eid-ul-Fitr. Mediated by calls from Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Qatar, this ‘temporary cessation’ aims to allow celebrations in peace, but underlying grievances persist.

The announcement originated from Islamabad, with Minister Ataullah Tarar detailing on X that Pakistan initiated the halt during its Operation Ghaib-ul-Haq. Effective from late March 18 to late March 23, it’s framed as a nod to Eid’s brotherhood, influenced by allied Gulf and Turkish urgings.

Skepticism mounted swiftly when border airstrikes on purported Taliban sites were reported shortly after. Tarar clarified the truce’s conditions: it evaporates instantly if Pakistan faces incursions, drones, or terror acts.

Kabul echoed the gesture promptly. Spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid affirmed Afghan forces would pause defensive actions for Eid, but vowed swift retaliation to any aggression, positioning Afghanistan as resolute defenders.

The backdrop is grim: Taliban accusations of a Pakistani airstrike on a Kabul rehab facility, claiming over 400 deaths and 250 injuries from the Monday assault. Wednesday’s mass burials amplified international condemnation, spotlighting the human cost.

Sirajuddin Haqqani labeled it an assault on human and Islamic values, per Tolo News reports. With over 100 deaths previously blamed on Pakistan by Afghanistan, mistrust runs deep.

This Eid window offers a sliver of calm, yet both sides signal readiness to resume if crossed. Analysts see it as a tactical breather rather than a path to lasting peace, with the Durand Line divide as fraught as ever. Regional powers watch closely, hoping for de-escalation beyond the holiday.
