Regional trade faces severe disruption as dozens of Pakistani truck drivers remain stranded for weeks at major border crossings, caught in an escalating dispute between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The closure of vital trade routes has led to hundreds of vehicles being parked, leaving drivers without basic necessities like food, money, and shelter.

Exporters and logistics companies report that the suspension of cross-border operations has effectively halted the movement of Pakistani kinnow fruit and other shipments destined for Afghanistan, Iran, and Central Asian nations. This trade shutdown, which began on October 11, follows significant clashes between Pakistani and Afghan forces, marking the most serious incident since the Taliban’s return to power in 2021. Islamabad has accused Kabul of failing to address militant activities originating from Afghan soil.

The impact is particularly severe for kinnow exporters, freight handlers, and logistics firms, with perishable goods perishing at the border points. This crisis unfolds during the peak season for kinnow exports, exacerbating financial hardship for everyone involved, from farmers to transporters. Efforts to ease financial burdens, such as exempting kinnow exports to Iran and Central Asia from complex financial regulations, have reportedly been rejected.

Last year, Pakistan exported kinnows worth $110 million. However, this year’s earnings are projected to decrease to $100 million due to the ongoing crisis. Thousands of cargo containers are stuck across Pakistan, incurring significant daily demurrage costs for traders and clearing agents. Urgent calls are being made to waive these penalties, as many small businesses and exporters are facing imminent collapse.

Imagine a colossal network of steel tracks spanning over 220,000 kilometers, long enough to circumnavigate the globe more than five times. This is the United States’ railway system, the most extensive in the world. Connecting vast distances, from bustling cities and industrial heartlands to agricultural hubs and coastal ports, this infrastructure is the silent engine of the American economy.

The origins of this epic network date back to the 19th century, driven by private companies eager to link the East and West Coasts. The completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869 was a monumental achievement, revolutionizing transportation and trade. Unlike many nations, the US largely maintained private ownership of its freight railways, a model that fueled rapid expansion and consolidation. Today, major players like Union Pacific, BNSF Railway, and CSX dominate the primary routes.

While passenger travel takes a backseat compared to high-speed rail in other countries, the US excels in heavy freight transport. Countless freight trains carry essential goods like coal, grain, automobiles, and consumer products across the continent daily. A single freight train can haul the equivalent of 280 trucks, moving a ton of goods significantly further on a single gallon of fuel. Amtrak provides passenger services, though often utilizing tracks owned by freight operators.

This immense system, comprising over 6,000 operators from colossal corporations to local lines, includes remarkable feats of engineering, such as a 500 km straight rail segment across the Great Plains. The environmental benefits are substantial; rail is a remarkably fuel-efficient mode of transport, producing lower emissions per ton-mile than trucking. This efficiency underscores its vital role in supply chain resilience, economic output, and sustainable commerce, making the American railway system an indispensable part of the nation’s past, present, and future.

President Donald Trump has officially ended the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, signing a temporary funding bill into law late Wednesday. The historic 43-day closure has officially concluded, bringing relief to millions of federal employees and resuming vital government services. This landmark decision came shortly after the House of Representatives passed the measure, securing the President’s support and ensuring a unified Republican front despite significant Democratic opposition.

The newly signed legislation is set to revitalize crucial systems, including the air-traffic control network, and guarantee back pay for hundreds of thousands of federal workers. Essential food assistance programs, which were disrupted by the shutdown, will also be reinstated. Approximately 1.3 million federal employees, who were either furloughed or compelled to work without compensation, will now see their paychecks restored. The bill ensures that all affected workers will receive their owed back pay as operations fully resume. Beyond immediate relief, the package also secures full-year funding for key sectors such as Military Construction, Veterans’ Affairs, and the Department of Agriculture, safeguarding critical food assistance programs like SNAP. While the immediate crisis is resolved, the underlying political disputes remain, signaling future legislative challenges.

Hundreds of flights across the United States have been cancelled due to ongoing federal government shutdown, leading to significant travel disruptions and passenger delays. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has mandated air traffic reductions, impacting numerous airports and raising concerns about the escalating situation. Charlotte Douglas International Airport reported over 130 cancellations by Saturday afternoon, with major hubs like Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, and Newark also experiencing severe disruptions. These reductions, currently affecting 4% of flights at 40 airports, are projected to rise to 10% if the shutdown continues. The root cause of these cancellations is a critical staffing shortage among air traffic controllers who have been working for weeks without pay. Many controllers are reporting sick or taking on additional jobs, while others are forced into mandatory overtime. Transportation officials have warned that further flight cuts may be inevitable. While international long-haul flights have largely remained on schedule, domestic travelers are facing stress, rebooking challenges, and last-minute changes, with some opting to cancel trips entirely as the holiday season looms. The shutdown’s impact also extends to American military bases overseas, where thousands of unpaid local employees in Europe are facing financial hardship. Host governments are stepping in to cover salaries in some locations, underscoring the widespread economic strain caused by the federal impasse.

The implementation of new GST rates from September 22nd and the onset of Navratri have spurred a significant surge in vehicle sales. Several companies have achieved new records during this period. This momentum from September is expected to provide substantial benefits in October, potentially leading to record-breaking vehicle sales. According to a City Research report, the sales of passenger vehicles and two-wheelers showed improvement in September 2025. This growth is attributed to festive demand and the recent GST rate cuts.

The report highlights that the festive season began on September 22nd, after which the market experienced an upswing compared to the slower sales in August. Wholesale sales for some auto companies (OEMs) were limited due to delayed purchases by dealers and logistical challenges. Tractor sales remained exceptionally strong. Considering the full-month impact of the GST cuts and positive market sentiment, an even more impressive performance is anticipated in October.

**Strong Recovery by Auto Companies**

Bajaj Auto witnessed a 5% year-on-year (YoY) increase in domestic two-wheeler sales and a 48% month-on-month (MoM) surge. Exports grew by 12%, while commercial vehicle sales declined by 1%. However, exports increased by 67%. TVS Motor’s total two-wheeler sales rose by 11%, with a 12% increase in domestic sales and an 8% rise in electric vehicles (EVs). Hero MotoCorp’s domestic sales grew by 5%, and total sales increased by 8%. The company’s exports saw a remarkable 95% growth.

**Strong Performance in Passenger Vehicle Sales**

Maruti Suzuki experienced robust retail sales. The company delivered nearly 2 lakh vehicles and had 2.5 lakh bookings pending. However, wholesale sales decreased by 8% due to logistical issues. Domestic sales, in conjunction with Toyota, decreased by 6%, but exports increased by 52%, resulting in an overall sales increase of 3%. Hyundai’s domestic sales increased by 1%, while exports surged by 44%. Mahindra & Mahindra’s SUV sales increased by 10% and tractor sales by a substantial 50%, supported by festive demand. Tata Motors recorded a 45% growth in domestic passenger vehicle sales. Commercial vehicle sales remained stable, while small commercial vehicles and pickup sales increased by 30%.

Recent changes to the H-1B visa program implemented by the Trump administration, which included a substantial increase in fees to the equivalent of approximately 8.8 million rupees, have triggered a…

Recent changes to the H-1B visa program implemented by the Trump administration, which included a substantial increase in fees to the equivalent of approximately 8.8 million rupees, have triggered a significant legal challenge in the United States. A coalition comprised of healthcare providers, religious organizations, university professors, and other groups has filed a lawsuit in federal court. The plaintiffs allege that the fee hike has created chaos for employers, employees, and federal agencies.

The alterations were mandated by President Donald Trump through a proclamation issued on September 19th. The rationale behind the increased fees was the perceived misuse of the H-1B visa program, which the administration believed was exploited to replace American workers with lower-paid, less-skilled foreign labor. The proclamation was slated to take effect within 36 hours, catching employers off guard.

The lawsuit, lodged in a federal court in San Francisco, argues that the H-1B program is critical for the recruitment of healthcare professionals, educators, and contributes to innovation and economic development within the United States, facilitating the employment of specialized workers. The Democracy Forward Foundation and the Justice Action Center have jointly stated that without relief from the visa changes, hospitals could lose doctors, religious institutions could lose their clergy, schools could lose teachers, and entire industries could be at risk of losing their key innovators. They are seeking immediate intervention to halt the order and restore normal operations for employers and employees, branding the fee increase as an anti-immigration tactic.

Critics of the H-1B visa program argue that it facilitates the entry of foreign workers, often willing to work for salaries as low as $60,000 per annum, while American tech workers typically earn upwards of $100,000. Historically, H-1B visas have been granted through a lottery system. In the current year, Amazon, headquartered in Seattle, received the most visas (over 10,000), followed by Tata Consultancy, Microsoft, Apple, and Google. California has the highest concentration of H-1B workers.

American University Professors Association President Todd Wolfson expressed concern that the $100,000 fee could deter talented individuals from seeking opportunities in the U.S. and hinder life-saving research efforts. Furthermore, the Regional Director of the United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, Mike Miller, stated that the Trump administration’s plan prioritizes wealth and connections over scientific capability and hard work. Democracy Forward President Skye Perryman asserts the high fees could encourage corruption and are illegal, as the H-1B program was established by Congress and is not subject to unilateral changes or fee imposition via executive order.

In response, White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson defended the administration’s position, emphasizing that the order is legally sound. She indicated that the measure seeks to prevent entities from exploiting the system and suppressing American wages.

The H-1B program plays a pivotal role by permitting U.S. employers to recruit foreign specialists in sectors such as technology, healthcare, and education. Tech companies are highly reliant on the visa program for bringing in international talent. Each year, 65,000 visas are issued, with an additional 20,000 reserved for those holding advanced degrees. These visas are generally valid for three to six years. As per government data, India leads in the program, with 71% of approvals last year, while China had 11.7%. Employers already pay fees ranging from $2,000 to $5,000, depending on factors like company size. The Trump order would increase the cost to approximately 8.8 million rupees per new H-1B hire.

Pakistan has informed the International Monetary Fund (IMF) about the economic damage caused by recent floods. The government revealed that the floods resulted in a loss of 371 billion rupees ($1.2 billion). The infrastructure and agriculture sectors bore the brunt of the damage. The floods claimed the lives of 1,006 people, injured 1,063, and damaged 12,569 homes.

The government had set a GDP growth target of 4.2% for the fiscal year 2025-26, but this is now projected to decrease to 3.9% due to the impact of the floods. Finance ministry officials told the IMF that Pakistan requires $26 billion in external funding, with $12 billion needed immediately.

The floods caused extensive damage to Pakistan’s infrastructure, including 2,133 kilometers of roads, 248 bridges, and 866 water structures. In addition, 1,098 schools, 128 healthcare centers, and 3.026 million acres of agricultural land were affected. Livestock, businesses, and public buildings also suffered significant losses.

Looking at the regional impact, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa recorded the highest number of deaths (504), followed by Punjab (304), Sindh (80), Great Britain (41), Jammu and Kashmir (38), Balochistan (30), and Islamabad (9). Balochistan saw the most damage to homes, with 5,086 houses destroyed. Roads and bridges were also damaged in various provinces.

The agriculture sector suffered a loss of 155 billion rupees. Crops like cotton, wheat, sugarcane, and maize were affected. Cotton production could decrease by 1.5 to 2 million bales, while wheat production may decline by 0.7 to 1.3 million tons. The growth rate of the agricultural sector could fall to 4%.

The industrial sector’s growth rate is projected to decrease from 4.3% to 4.2%, and the growth in the electricity, gas, and water supply sector is expected to drop from 3.5% to 2.9%. The service sector’s growth may also decline from 4% to 3.7%.

To secure funding, Pakistan informed the IMF that it plans to launch a Panda bond in the Chinese market in November, targeting $250 to $300 million. A Eurobond is planned for April 2026. To increase foreign exchange reserves, Pakistan purchased over $500 million from the interbank market in June 2025, bringing its total reserves to $7.7 billion.

At the Shubham “K Mart” in Raipur, the Chief Minister of the state made a surprise visit to understand the impact of GST savings. He purchased essential household items worth 1,645 rupees, paying via UPI. He interacted with shoppers, inquiring about the difference in prices of household goods due to the GST rate cuts. The Chief Minister not only bought groceries, benefiting from the reduced GST rates but also engaged with the public.

The United States, under former President Donald Trump, has implemented a significant increase in the fees associated with H1-B visas, raising the cost from $600,000 to $8.8 million. This new fee structure took effect on September 21st, sparking numerous questions among H1-B visa holders and applicants. This includes details about who will be affected and who may be exempt.

This move is expected to disproportionately affect Indian professionals, who constitute approximately 70% of H1-B visa recipients. A senior Trump administration official has clarified the details to address existing confusion.

**Exemptions from the New Fees:**

According to White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany, the $1 million fee is solely applicable to new visa holders, while current visa holders are exempt. Individuals rushing to the US from India were not required to arrive before Sunday to avoid the new fee. Additionally, the Homeland Security Secretary retains the discretion to waive the fee for any company or worker whose activities are deemed to be in the national security, economic interest, or public good of the United States.

**Who Must Pay the New Fees?**

As per the order issued by the Trump administration, any company wishing to bring a worker from outside the US on an H-1B visa will be required to pay the substantial fee of $8.8 million. It is crucial to understand that this rule applies to the companies employing the workers, not the visa holders themselves.

**Potential Impact on India:**

Given that around 70% of the workers on H-1B visas are Indian, the increase could significantly affect the country. As the cost of employing foreign workers rises for companies, they may become less inclined to hire from countries like India, instead prioritizing American workers. This could potentially lead to an increase in unemployment rates in India.

**What is an H-1B Visa?**

The H-1B visa is a type of work visa that allows US companies to employ foreign professionals in specialized occupations, such as scientists, engineers, and computer programmers. These visas are typically granted for a period of 3 years, with the possibility of extension up to 6 years.

**Rationale Behind the Fee Increase:**

President Trump, consistent with his ‘America First’ policy, stated that the H-1B visa program was intended to attract highly skilled workers, but its use had been exploited. Companies, allegedly, used the visa to bring in foreign professionals at lower salaries, displacing American workers. The new regulations, according to Trump, aim to protect American jobs and ensure that only those with high-level skills are granted entry.

The Indian government is currently assessing the full ramifications of the United States’ decision to impose a $100,000 annual fee on H-1B visa applications. This measure is being studied by relevant parties, including the Indian industry, with the expectation that it may cause humanitarian consequences, particularly for families. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) indicated that both Indian and U.S. industries have a shared interest in fostering innovation and creativity, suggesting that consultations would be beneficial in determining the best course of action. The government noted reports of the proposed restrictions, with industry already beginning to analyze the implications. Skilled talent mobility is recognized as a significant contributor to technological advancements, economic growth, and wealth creation in both the United States and India, with policymakers considering the recent steps while taking into account the strong people-to-people connections between the two nations. The MEA expressed concern that the measure could cause family disruptions and expressed hope that US authorities would address these issues appropriately. The new fee, part of a presidential proclamation, is framed as a move to curb “systemic abuse” and is set to take effect on September 21, 2024.
