India’s MSME sector is poised for continued robust credit demand, but deep-rooted financing challenges continue to stifle its momentum. A new report from ICRA Limited and Assocham predicts that credit expansion for FY2026 will hit ₹26 lakh crore, reflecting a solid 14.3 percent growth from the prior year.

Looking ahead to FY2027, growth is expected to ease slightly to 11.3-12 percent, amounting to ₹23.5-25 lakh crore. Analysts attribute this to a high base from last year rather than any dip in underlying demand, pointing to a balanced trajectory ahead.

While demand thrives, fueled by economic recovery, stronger balance sheets, and formalization drives, the sector grapples with limited access to funds. This gap curtails growth and innovation among small businesses, which are crucial to India’s economic fabric.

Overall bank lending is set to hold steady, with MSMEs and retail borrowers leading incremental growth. Assocham Secretary General Saurabh Sanyal stressed, ‘Ensuring seamless credit flow to MSMEs is essential for inclusive prosperity and widespread economic gains.’

Echoing this, ICRA’s K. Ravichandran noted the financial system’s improved stability but urged a shift from conventional lending paradigms to meet modern needs effectively.

MSMEs are at the heart of supply chain diversification and formal economy integration, boosting activity in cities and towns alike. Policy measures enhancing formalization and data transparency have aided lenders in better evaluating risks, spurring credit disbursement.

Nevertheless, structural hurdles loom large: varied borrower risks, collateral shortages, and opacity in operations make funding hard to secure promptly, particularly for informal or semi-formal units. The report calls for holistic reforms to close this divide, empowering MSMEs to propel India’s growth story forward.

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 kicked off in New Delhi on Monday, with senior officials stressing that artificial intelligence is indispensable for achieving inclusive economic growth in India.

Chief Economic Adviser V. Anant Nageswaran painted a compelling vision, warning that procrastination in AI adoption could severely limit India’s economic choices. “To promote inclusive development, India needs to leverage AI benefits right away,” he asserted.

Nageswaran envisioned India pioneering a model where human and machine intelligence mutually enhance prosperity. He urged all stakeholders—government bodies, businesses, educators, and regulators—to collaborate as ‘Team India.’

Key priorities include bolstering basic education and widespread dissemination of premium skills. “AI advancement requires proactive measures, strong political commitment, and enhanced capacities,” he noted.

Reforms in education and skilling must lead the charge, followed by growth in labor-heavy services and removal of bureaucratic barriers. Failure to act decisively risks widespread instability, Nageswaran warned.

MeitY Secretary S. Krishnan reinforced the need for people-focused AI. “Ensure democratic access to AI resources, keeping humans central to the transformation,” he said, positioning AI as a catalyst for growth in India and the Global South.

This summit marks a pivotal moment, galvanizing collective action to make AI a tool for shared prosperity rather than division.

In the Uttar Pradesh Assembly, Finance Minister Suresh Khanna painted an optimistic picture of economic resurgence while presenting the state budget. He announced that per capita income has skyrocketed beyond double the 2016-17 figure of Rs 54,564, now at Rs 1,09,844 for 2024-25. Projections for 2025-26 peg it even higher at Rs 1.20 lakh.

Khanna credited the BJP regime’s multifaceted initiatives for this leap. Enhanced security, industrial boom, employment generation, gender equity, agrarian prosperity, and poverty reduction have propelled comprehensive growth. The GSDP hit Rs 30.25 lakh crore in 2024-25, up 13.4% year-on-year.

A staggering 6 crore citizens have escaped multidimensional poverty, and unemployment stands at just 2.24%. UP’s SDG ranking improved dramatically from 29th to 18th. The landmark Global Investors Summit in February 2024 attracted Rs 50 lakh crore in MoUs, eyeing 10 lakh new jobs.

Positioning UP as India’s mobile manufacturing epicenter, 65% of national production occurs here, alongside 55% of electronics components. Exports reached Rs 44,744 crore, bolstered by innovation driving the state to ‘Leader’ status in national startup rankings.

NITI Aayog’s Export Preparedness Index crowned UP number one among landlocked states. Agriculturally, it tops production charts for key crops. Irrigation coverage grew by 60 lakh hectares to 2.76 crore, with crop intensity jumping to 193.7% from 162.7%.

This budget speech reinforces UP’s trajectory toward self-reliance and national leadership, blending past successes with future ambitions.

Praising fiscal reforms and rising investments, Modi noted how Saha’s administration has spawned employment avenues, empowering the youth and signaling Tripura’s economic renaissance.

Haryana Minister Anil Vij dropped a significant hint on the state’s forthcoming budget, stating it will be crafted to fulfill the expectations of the masses. During an interaction with media persons, Vij outlined how the government is fine-tuning allocations based on public feedback.

‘Every rupee in the budget will serve the interests of Haryana’s janata,’ the minister affirmed. He detailed plans to enhance funding for agriculture subsidies, irrigation projects, and public health infrastructure, areas repeatedly flagged by citizens.

The budget preparation process has involved widespread participation, including virtual town halls and surveys. Vij credited this collaborative effort for making the fiscal plan more responsive and effective.

Anticipated highlights include expanded pension schemes for the elderly, youth employment guarantees, and urban renewal programs. Vij also touched upon the government’s strategy to tackle unemployment through vocational training hubs.

In the context of Haryana’s evolving economy, this budget is seen as a litmus test for the ruling coalition’s governance model. Economists predict a surge in capital expenditure to spur industrial growth while maintaining social safety nets.

Vij concluded by urging citizens to stay engaged, promising transparency in budget implementation. This proactive stance positions Haryana as a model for citizen-focused policymaking in India.

The buzz around Vibrant Gujarat’s new Regional Conferences is electric, with industry stakeholders predicting a transformative impact on India’s local economies. Unlike the grand global summits, these focused gatherings target district-level development, sparking ecosystems that rival urban powerhouses.

Business leaders gathered in Ahmedabad praised the move as visionary. Decentralizing Vibrant Gujarat brings investment directly to doorsteps, fostering self-reliant communities. The conferences feature hands-on sessions on technology adoption, supply chain integration, and green manufacturing.

Gujarat’s model draws from its success in turning coastal villages into export hubs. Regional events will replicate this by connecting local entrepreneurs with global investors, skill programs, and infrastructure upgrades. Initial feedback reveals doubled participation from rural enterprises, signaling broad appeal.
