  • Dwayne Johnson convinced ‘Black Adam’ makers to onboard Henry Cavill

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Dwayne Johnson, who is celebrating the success of ‘Black Adam’, fought hard for Henry Cavill’s cameo as Superman as Warner Bros was not initially keen on bringing back the actor.

In a video posted on Twitter, the DC star said that he wanted to establish ‘Black Adam’ “as the most powerful, unstoppable force in the DC universe,” reports Deadline.

To manage the latter, Johnson said: “We have to bring back the most powerful, unstoppable force of all time in any universe. And you guys know who I’m talking about? Of course, that is Superman. And that’s Henry Cavill.”

Henry Cavill as Superman(Photo | IMDB)According to Deadline, Johnson then revealed that the studio “inexplicably and inexcusably” did not want to bring back Cavill but he was not going to take no for an answer and his team got to work.

“This has been years in the making regarding bringing Henry Cavill back and years of strategic conversations and we were not going to take no for an answer,” he said, as quoted by Deadline.

“There was no way, there’s no viable logical way that you can attempt to build out the DC Universe without the most powerful force and the greatest superhero of all time sitting on the sidelines. It’s impossible to do,” he added.

Johnson continued: “It all comes back to where Superman you have to have Superman in the mix. So that’s why we fought hard to bring Superman back, Henry Cavill, and there was no other Superman, by the way, to bring back Henry Cavill is our generation Superman and in my opinion, the greatest Superman. And I mean that respectfully to the other actors, especially Christopher Reeve, but the greatest Superman of all time.”

Deadline notes that with Cavill back in the DC Universe, the ‘Black Adam’ star said that they can “now build out the DC Universe, properly, strategically and smartly.”

Johnson also pointed out that since the film came out, the “hierarchy of power in the DC Universe has changed and, of course, now we have new leadership at DC and at Warner Bros.”

  • ‘It’s a huge moment as a DC fan’: The Rock

    Express News Service

Everyone knows Superman and Batman, but perhaps not Black Adam. Where does he fit into the DC Universe? Black Adam is basically the Dirty Harry (from the 1971 film of the same name, starring ClintEastwood) of the DC Universe. He’s an anti-hero and does things that most superheroes would never do. He basically cares only about the people he loves and will do anything to protect them. He is loyal, and he’s a champion, but he’s also disruptive. In terms of powers and abilities, he’s about equal to Superman, but the core value system is different. Black Adam cracks open the DC Universe beyond all that we have seen. He is a game-changer, not just as a character, but because this move introduces five new superheroes that make up the Justice Society of America, which is a group that pre-dates the Justice League by years.

How long did it take for you to bring Black Adam to the screen? It’s been over 10 years. It feels like everything I have done in my career has led to this point. This is a huge moment for me as a DC fan as well.

How long have you been a superhero fan? Since forever. I grew up a DC boy watching Superman and Batman cartoons on Saturday mornings. I always read the comics and then one day, I got my first Black Adam comic and it changed my life. Here was a superhero with brown skin. I had never seen anything like that, and have wanted to be Black Adam from that point.

What was it like when you finally put on the costume and walked out on set as Black Adam? I have to admit, I was more than a little nervous, but then saw the rest of our amazing cast in costume and all that went away. It felt awesome to finally play a character that means so much to me.

A still from DC universe’s Black Adam Did you have to undergo any additional training to get into the superhero shape? I did. I had to change my routine quite a bit. I wanted to get the look dead right, and it was tough because there wasn’t any reference other than the comic books. It took a lot of working out and eating the right stuff. And let me just say that’s all me in the suit. There is no padding.

You mentioned how Black Adam is like Dirty Harry. Is it true that you partly based your performance on Clint Eastwood? That is true. I was inspired by Eastwood, who is also my favourite actor. There is a lot of Clint in Black Adam, and I make no excuses for that. The good, the bad and the ugly––he was a big influence on me.

Everyone is excited at the prospect of a Black Adam versus Superman showdown. What can you tell us about that and who do you think will win? All I will say is that when we started this, we knew where we were headed. Between Black Adam and Superman, let’s just say it’ll be a close fight. Black Adam is pound-for-pound about as close as you will get to Superman.

You worked with Jaume Collet-Serra on Jungle Cruise, a fantasy adventure film. What do you think made him the right director for Black Adam, a very different movie? It is different, but Jaume had the passion and the vision to make Black Adam in the way it needed to be made. I loved his hunger to succeed when we were doing Jungle Cruise. This character is a huge departure from anything else I have ever done in my career, so I needed someone like Jaume to have my back. He really helped me.

What would you say is the closest you have to a real-life superpower? I just try to be a nice guy, to be kind and positive. That’s all I’ve ever done throughout my career.

What keeps you motivated after all these years in the business? The support of my family and friends and, most of all, the memory of some hard times I had as a kid. It’s been a long road from being evicted from our home in Hawaii, but I will never forget that time, no matter how lucky I get.

What do your children think of having a superhero for a dad? Well, they’re a little too young to see this, but they have seen me in costume and they love it. It’s special.

  • Dwayne Johnson reveals he lobbied to get Black Adam removed from DC’s 2017 ‘Shazam!’ film

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson has revealed that if it wasn’t for him the titular character that he’ll play in ‘Black Adam’ could’ve debuted in 2019’s ‘Shazam!’, had Warner Bros. went ahead with its original plan.

According to Variety, the ‘Shazam!’ movie went into development in 2014 and its script originally included origin stories for both the title character and Black Adam.

Both the super-powered fictional individuals have a shared history in the DC comics, so it seemed fitting to launch their big screen iterations together in one film. However, Johnson disagreed with this.

Speaking about this to Vanity Fair magazine, Johnson said, “When the first draft of the movie came to us, it was a combination of Black Adam and Shazam: Two origin stories in one movie.”

“Now that was the goal, so it wasn’t a complete surprise. But when I read that, I just knew in my gut, ‘We can’t make this movie like this. We would be doing Black Adam an incredible disservice.’ It would’ve been fine for Shazam having two origin stories converge in one movie, but not good for Black Adam,” he added.

Revealing how he fixed the situation, Johnson continued, “I made a phone call. I said, ‘I have to share my thoughts here. It’s very unpopular…’ because everybody thought, ‘Hey, this script is great, let’s go make this movie.’ I said, ‘I really think that you should make ‘Shazam!,’ make that movie on its own in the tone that you want. And I think we should separate this as well.’”

As per Variety, Warner Bros. ultimately agreed, and now Johnson will be seen leading the upcoming standalone ‘Black Adam’ tentpole this fall. The actor has repeatedly promised moviegoers that his ‘Black Adam’ movie will forever change the DC universe on the big screen.

Joining Johnson in the film are Aldis Hodge, Noah Centineo, Sarah Shahi, Marwan Kenzari and Pierce Brosnan. ‘Black Adam’ is set to release in theatres on October 21, 2022.

  • Dungeons & Dragons TV series gets director

    By Express News Service

Director Rawson Marshall Thurber, who directed the recently released Netflix film Red Notice, starring Ryan Reynolds, Dwayne Johnson, and Gal Gadot, will helm the upcoming Dungeons & Dragons television series.

Thurber will also develop the pilot script and executive produce the series, which is based on the wildly popular fantasy role-playing game franchise. The Dungeons & Dragons television series has been in development for some time now with writer Derek Kolstad (writer known for the John Wick franchise) writing and developing the series.

Meanwhile, a Dungeons & Dragons live-action film directed by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley wrapped production in August last year. First published in 1974 by game designers Ernest Gary Gygax and David Arneson, Dungeons & Dragons has grown to arguably be one of the largest role-playing franchises in the world.

The project stems from an original story by Seven Bucks Productions’ President of Production Hiram Garcia that Amazon Studios landed after a competitive bidding war last year. According to Deadline, Johnson announced his involvement with the title, slated for a 2023 holiday release, back in June. While Johnson and Evans both appeared in Shawn Levy’s 2021 comedy ‘Free Guy’ for Disney, ‘Red One’ is the first film that the pair will topline together.

Evans is best known for his turn as Steve Rogers (aka Super Soldier Captain America) in the Marvel films ‘Captain America: The First Avenger’, ‘The Avengers’, ‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’, ‘Avengers: Age of Ultron’, ‘Ant-Man’, ‘Captain America: Civil War’, ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’, ‘Captain Marvel’ and ‘Avengers: Endgame’. The actor will next star in the Russo brothers’ film ‘The Gray Man’ for Netflix, and as the voice of Buzz Lightyear in Pixar’s origin story ‘Lightyear’, which is set for release in the US on June 17. He is also in development on an untitled Gene Kelly project, which he will star in and produce, and is set to star in the upcoming Apple feature ‘Ghosted’.

Evans also recently appeared in Adam McKay’s end-of-the-world comedy ‘Don’t Look Up’ for Netflix, and in Mark Bomback’s Apple TV+ series ‘Defending Jacob’, which saw him portraying an assistant DA whose world was shattered when his son was charged with murder.

  • No chance: Dwayne Johnson rebuffs Vin Diesel’s offer to return for ‘Fast & Furious 10’

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson has once and for all ruled out the possibility of him returning to the “Fast & Furious” franchise.

Despite a recent attempt at reconciliation from lead star Vin Diesel, Johnson said he remains firm on decision to not appear in any future “Fast & Furious” movie.

“I was very surprised by Vin’s recent post. This past June, when Vin and I actually connected not over social media, I told him directly – and privately – that I would not be returning to the franchise. I was firm yet cordial with my words and said that I would always be supportive of the cast and always root for the franchise to be successful, but that there was no chance I would return. I privately spoke with my partners at Universal as well, all of whom were very supportive as they understand the problem,” Johnson told CNN.

The 49-year-old actor played the role of Luke Hobbs in the long-running film series, beginning with 2011’s “Fast Five”.

He later reprised the role for “Fast & Furious 6” (2013), “Furious 7” (2015) and “The Fate of the Furious” (2017) as well as the 2019 spinoff “Hobbs & Shaw”.

Johnson had a major fall out with Diesel during the making of “The Fate of the Furious” that resulted in the actor dropping out of the latest instalment, “Fast and Furious 9”, which released earlier this year.

In November, Diesel had extended an olive branch to Johnson by writing an open letter and asking the actor to return to the franchise for the upcoming 10th instalment.

Johnson called Diesel’s post an “example of his manipulation”.

“I didn’t like that he brought up his children in the post, as well as Paul Walker’s death. Leave them out of it. We had spoken months ago about this and came to a clear understanding,” the “Red Notice” star said.

He asserted that he ended his “Fast & Furious” journey with “gratitude and grace” and sent his best wishes to the rest of the team for the upcoming movie.

“It’s unfortunate that this public dialogue has muddied the waters. Regardless, I’m confident in the ‘Fast’ universe and its ability to consistently deliver for the audience, and I truly wish my former co-stars and crew members the best of luck and success in the next chapter,” Johnson said.

The next movie in the series will hit the theatres on April 7, 2023.

Diesel will play the lead role of Dominic Toretto, while regular series cast members Tyrese Gibson, Sung Kang, Chris “Ludacris” Bridges, Jordana Brewster and Michelle Rodriguez are also expected to return.

Filmmaker Justin Lin will be directing the film.

  • Vin Diesel publicly requests Dwayne Johnson to return to ‘Fast and Furious’ franchise

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: ‘Fast & Furious’ star Vin Diesel has penned an open invite to Dwayne Johnson, urging him to return to the film franchise for its 10th part.

In the invite, Diesel publicly requested Dwayne to let go of the hard feelings and reprise his role as Agent Lucas Hobbs in ‘Fast & Furious 10’.

“My little brother Dwayne… the time has come. The world awaits the finale of Fast 10. As you know, my children refer to you as Uncle Dwayne in my house. There is not a holiday that goes by that they and you don’t send well wishes… but the time has come. Legacy awaits,” he wrote on Instagram.

For the unversed, reports of the tiff between Diesel and Dwayne first surfaced in 2016 when they clashed for the last time on the set of ‘The Fate of the Furious’. They have been exchanging barbs in the media ever since Dwayne made an Instagram post in 2016 referring to Diesel and in which he questioned his professionalism, reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Expressing his wishes for Dwayne to come on board once again, Diesel added, “I told you years ago that I was going to fulfill my promise to Pablo. I swore that we would reach and manifest the best Fast in the finale that is 10! I say this out of love… but you must show up, do not leave the franchise idle you have a very important role to play. Hobbs can’t be played by no other. I hope that you rise to the occasion and fulfill your destiny.”

Dwayne is yet to respond to Diesel publicly.

  • Dwayne Johnson reuniting with ‘Jumanji’ director Jake Kasdan for ‘Red One’

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: Actor Dwayne Johnson is reuniting with his ‘Jumanji’ director Jake Kasdan for ‘Red One’, the unique Christmas-themed feature project set up at Amazon.

As per The Hollywood Reporter, Kasdan will direct the project and will also serve as one of the producers.

Johnson is attached to star and is producing with his Seven Bucks Productions cohorts, Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia. The latter, who is Seven Bucks’ president of production, created the original story that is being translated into a script by Chris Morgan, who previously worked with Johnson on four ‘Fast and Furious’ movies as well as the Johnson-led 2019 spinoff, ‘Hobbs & Shaw’. Morgan is also producing.

Johnson’s role in the film hasn’t been revealed yet, but the outlet reported that he could star as Santa Claus in the holiday movie.

Kasdan is producing via his banner, The Detective Agency, along with Melvin Mar; Sky Salem Robinson is co-producing.

Kasdan and Johnson worked together on ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ and ‘Jumanji: The Next Level’, blockbusters that grossed over USD 1.7 billion worldwide.

Amazon picked up the project in June. Details are being kept under wraps but ‘Red One’, which is a tentative title, is described by Amazon as “a globe-trotting, four-quadrant action-adventure comedy, imagining a whole new universe to explore within the holiday genre.”

The film is slated to go on floors in 2022 with a 2023 holiday release.

Although ‘Red One’ won’t land on Amazon Prime until at least 2023, his fans won’t have to wait that long to see Johnson in a project. The actor has a handful of other projects premiering soon, including the Netflix action-comedy ‘Red Notice’, which he stars in alongside Gal Gadot and Ryan Reynolds. ‘Red Notice’ will debut on the streamer on November 5.

Johnson is also starring in two films coming out next year: the animated movie ‘DC League of Super-Pets’, in which he voices Krypto, and ‘Black Adam’, in which he plays the titular character.
