  • Patna: Judicial magistrate booked for wife’s death; her parents allege dowry torture

    A case has been registered against a Judicial Magistrate of the Patna Civil Court Prateek Shall under the Danapur police station for allegedly torturing his wife for dowry.

    The deceased Chandini Chanda died at Raja Bazar Paras Hospital recently. Her parents have accused her husband and in-laws of allegedly murdering her. 

    “The deceased is the wife of a Judicial Magistrate in Patna City Civil Court. Her family members have alleged dowry murder. The entire matter is being investigated,” Danapur SHO said.

    “On August 14, we received information that my daughter was unwell and is admitted to a private hospital. Later, when there was no improvement, we admitted her to Paras Hospital where she died during treatment. My daughter’s in-laws often harassed her for dowry. They are responsible for her death,” the father of the deceased, Ashok Kumar, told a media outlet.

    Chandini married Prateek on 11 May 2022. A Hindi media outlet said that Chandini’s parents gave Rs 22 lakh in cash and a four-wheeler worth Rs 18 lakh as dowry. 

    Speaking to Janmanch, Chandini’s mother said that her daughter’s in-laws used to never allow her to come home, threatening her that if she went back, she would not be allowed to return to their place (“Mayike jaogi toh wapas nahi aane denge”). She also said that her daughter’s mobile phone was taken away by the in-laws.

    The mother alleged that Prateek Shall used to demand lakhs of rupees from them from time to time. “The last time when I talked to her (Chandini), she told me not to say anything to them. My daughter used to say, he is a Judge, he will trap you all,” she said.

  • Woman killed over dowry dispute in Muzaffarnagar

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A woman was allegedly killed by her in-laws in a village here over a dowry dispute, police said on Thursday.

    The body of Saina Fatma, wife of Mohd Abbas, was found in Sikandarpur village under the Charthawal police station limits on Wednesday with injury marks to the throat, local station house officer M P Singh said.

    Azhar Abbas, Fatma’s father, alleged that she was killed by her in-laws over a dowry dispute.

    Fatma was living at her parents’ house after an alleged incident of domestic violence, and had gone back to her in-laws just five days ago, he said.

    The couple had married six years ago.

  • Man arrested for setting wife on fire for dowry in Jharkhand

    GODDA: A man was arrested in Jharkhand’s Godda district for allegedly setting his wife on fire for dowry, police said.

    Rajesh Paswan of Kusumara was arrested on Saturday as a case was lodged against him and his parents at Mufassil police station after his wife Soni Devi died of burn injuries, they said.

    Soni Devi, mother of three children, was first tied with a rope by her husband and mother-in-law and then set on fire by sprinkling kerosene on September 16, police said.

    To make the incident look like an accident they also burst the gas cylinder of the house, the police said.

    Soni Devi was first brought to Godda Sadar Hospital from where she was referred to Bhagalpur.

    The doctors referred her to Patna AIIMS but she succumbed to her injuries.

    The postmortem report of Soni Devi brought the matter to light after which a case was lodged against her husband, mother-in-law and father-in-law.

    Raids are on to nab the mother-in-law and father-in-law of Soni Devi who are absconding, the police added.

  • Woman in UP village found hanging, family alleges she was killed over dowry

    MUZAFFARNAGAR: A woman was found hanging from the ceiling at her house in this district, with her family members alleging that she was killed by her in-laws for dowry, police said on Sunday.

    Suman, wife of Ram Kishan, was found dead at her house in Basi Khurd village under Budhana police station limits on Saturday evening, they said.

    The body has been sent for post-mortem, police said.

    The family members of Suman alleged that she was killed by her in-laws over dowry demands.

    Based on a complaint by Suman’s family, a case was lodged gainst her husband and three others, including her in-laws, police said.

    The matter is being probed, they said.

    In another incident, a married woman, identified as Shaista Begum, allegedly ended her life by taking poison in Kakroli area of the district on Sunday, according to police.

    The reason why she took the extreme step is yet not known, they said.

    Police said she was rushed to hospital where doctors declared her dead.
