  • Disney announces two new Marvel ‘Avengers’ films at Comic-Con

    By AFP

SAN DIEGO: Disney announced a slew of Marvel superhero movies including two new “Avengers” films Saturday at Comic-Con, as it offered screaming fans an emotional first glimpse at its upcoming “Black Panther” sequel.

The record-breaking Marvel movies have dominated Hollywood and global box offices in recent years, with 2019’s “Avengers: Endgame” briefly becoming the highest-grossing film of all time at more than $2.79 billion.

“I wonder if you guys wouldn’t mind looking ahead a little bit?” studio president Kevin Feige asked the wildly cheering hall of die-hard superhero fans toward the end of a raucous hour-plus presentation at a San Diego convention center.

“Avengers: The Kang Dynasty” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” will hit theaters in 2025, he then announced.

The films will aim to follow in the footsteps of “Avengers: Endgame,” which built unprecedented hype by rounding off storylines presented in all the preceding Marvel films.

The two new “Avengers” titles will conclude the next “saga” of more than a dozen inter-connected films and television shows in the “Marvel Cinematic Universe,” said Feige.

“That will complete the second saga of the MCU, which of course is ‘The Multiverse Saga,’” he said.

The Marvel franchise in recent films and shows has explored the “multiverse” concept popularized by superhero comic books, in which infinite universes — and infinite versions of each hero and villain — exist in parallel realities

    ‘Black Panther’ returns

The Marvel presentation capped off the biggest day at Comic-Con, and drew the week’s loudest and most frenzied cheers in the 6,000 capacity Hall H, where many had camped in line for days to gain access.

It ended with the first trailer for “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” a sequel to the first comic book film to win a best picture Oscar nomination, set to premiere November 11.

Returning director Ryan Coogler, taking to the San Diego stage with a colorful troupe of African drummers and dancers, paid an emotional tribute to the first film’s star, the “late, great Chadwick Boseman.”

Boseman died from cancer in 2020, and his role is not being taken over by another actor in the new film. “I promise you, I can feel his hand on me right now,” said Coogler.

“Chad is no longer with us physically, but his spirit, his passion, his genius, his pride in his culture, and the impact he made on this industry will be felt forever.”

Coogler then presented new characters in the franchise being played by Michaela Coel and Tenoch Huerta.

Coel, who won an Emmy for “I May Destroy You,” praised the unique “energy” of the first “Black Panther” film, which was widely seen as a breakthrough for Black representation in mainstream Hollywood movies.

“I think it’s got something to do with a Black superhero, padded out a clan of Black superheroes and what that kind of does for Black people,” she said.

    Marvel A-listers

Other Marvel films announced Saturday by Disney at the world’s most famous pop culture gathering included “Thunderbolts” and “Fantastic Four,” both due in 2024.

Feige also set out dates for “Blade” — in theaters November 2023 — and the newly titled “Captain America: New World Order” coming May 2024.

Bill Murray and Olivia Colman join the ranks of Hollywood A-listers flocking to the Marvel franchise, appearing in first-look footage from movie “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” respectively.

Chris Pratt, Paul Rudd, and Lupita Nyong’o also appeared on stage Saturday along with Jonathan Majors, whose “Kang the Conqueror” character appears poised to become a major new supervillain for the franchise.

    By Express News Service

Keanu Reeves is working on a docuseries about Formula One for the streaming portal Disney+. This yet-to-be-titled four-part series will reportedly focus on Formula One managing director Ross Brawn, who in 2009 bought the Honda team, renamed it Brawn GP, and took it to two championship victories.

Reeves will host the series and has already been conducting interviews. Last week, Reeves was pictured at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, UK, where he spoke to a local racing journalist about the documentary series.

“We want to tell that amazing remarkable story (of Brawn). There is so much to talk about. A friend of mine was telling me the story and I was so struck by it. He was actually working for Brawn back in the day in publicity and he’s a producer/director and so we were like, well let’s tell that story, let’s try and tell that story,” he said.

“It’s been really great to be able to learn more about what was going on in Formula One that year. It wasn’t just the cars, new regulations, FOTA (the Formula One Teams Association), and breakaway series. I mean there was just so much happening in Formula One at that time. The world of Formula One was just extraordinary. I mean, it’s always extraordinary, but in that year with Brawn GP I think something really special happened,” Keanu added.

  • Disney’s reported USD 300 million offer is ‘made up’, says Johnny Depp’s rep

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Johnny Depp has not been offered an apology deal worth $300 million. One of the representatives of the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star has denied the existence of any such deal saying, “This is made up,” reports NBC News.

A media report had earlier said that after Depp won his defamation suit against Amber Heard, Disney offered the deal plus an apology letter to Depp with the request to return to the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ franchise.

The NBC News report further states that Depp, who has played Captain Jack Sparrow in all the five ‘Pirates’ movies, the latest being the 2017 film ‘Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales’, has declined to be part of the franchise irrespective of how lucrative the offer is. The actor had made the statement in court.

At one point during the trial, Heard’s attorney Ben Rottenborn asked the actor, “The fact is, Mr Depp, if Disney came to you with $300 million and a million alpacas, nothing on this earth would get you to go back and work with Disney on a ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ film? Correct?”

Depp replied in the affirmative, “That is true, Mr. Rottenborn.”

A Virginia jury later ruled that Heard was liable for defaming Depp. The jury awarded $10 million to Depp in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

The Fairfax County Circuit Court Judge Penney Azcarate later reduced the punitive damages to $350,000, which is the state’s statutory cap or legal limit, making his total damages less than $10.4 million.

Back in May, ‘Pirates’ producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who is now working on two more films, was asked if Depp would be back for future projects. He told ‘The Sunday Times’, “Not at this point. The future is yet to be decided.”

  • Stephanie Beatriz was in labour when she recorded ‘Encanto’ song

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Actress Stephanie Beatriz has shared she was in labour while she was recording a track for her movie ‘Encanto’ and was singing her lines in between contractions.

The actress was pregnant with her daughter Rosaline when she voiced Mirabel in the animated Disney movie and continued with a planned studio session for the song ‘Waiting On A Miracle’ despite going into labour, reports femalefirst.co.uk.

Speaking on new Disney Podcast ‘Journey to the Magic’ hosted by Giovanna Fletcher, Beatriz said: “I was in early labour, but I didn’t tell anyone because the contractions were very far apart. But they were happening. I was also getting checked out all the time. My doctor was all over it – because I’m a little bit older and she was all over the pregnancy making sure I was going in for checks and everything.”

Beatriz said carrying on with work helped her conquer her anxiety about becoming a first-time mum.

She added: “If anything could have taken me out of the fear of having my first kid it was focusing on this job that I love to do. I love to work so much, I love telling stories and I don’t want that amazing part of myself to be sacrificed when it didn’t need to be.”

However, the actress shared she would have stepped away if she was having difficulties: “I know my own limits, and if I had said like I can’t breathe or I can’t do this or whatever and if I had been having contraction after contraction – I would sure as heck not do it.

“There were a couple of times, when we were in that booth where I was like I’m just going to look like I’m thinking about this for a while – while I feel my way through what’s happening with my body. All right let’s go!”

  • ‘Doctor Strange’ casts a spell on box office: USD 551.6 million, and counting

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Disney/Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ easily will extend its reign over the global box office in its second weekend without any truly fire-breathing competition from rival majors, according to ‘Deadline Hollywood’.

The blockbuster is expected to draw $74 million to $80 million over the weekend, which may be a 57-60 per cent decline, but is not likely to affect its position on top of the pecking order.

On Thursday, the North American collections of the Sam Raimi-directed sequel stood of $230.4 million. In overseas territories, the Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer has garnered $321.2 million to crank up a global total of $551.6 million.

Hitting the five-century global mark, notes ‘Deadline Hollywood’, was “pre-ordained” following a weekend debut that ultimately came in at $449.4 million. That was good for the second-biggest worldwide start for a Hollywood movie during the pandemic era, and the fourth ever for the MCU, behind ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ and ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’.

The sorcerer’s Top 10 offshore markets, as of Tuesday, were Korea ($32 million), the UK ($27.8 million), Mexico ($23.8 million), Brazil ($17.6 million), India ($14.3 million), Australia ($13.7 million), France ($12.9 million), Indonesia ($10.5 million), Japan ($10.3 million) and Germany ($10.2 million).
