  • Selena Gomez says she is no longer haunted by her Disney past

    By ANI

WASHINGTON: American actor and singer Selena Gomez, who rose to global fame as the star of Disney Channel’s ‘Wizards of Waverly Place’ but was restricted from expressing her views publically, has stated that she no longer feels haunted by her Disney past.

According to Variety, an American media company, the ‘Only Murders in the Building’ actor has told Vanity Fair as part of its 2023 Hollywood Issue that she is feeling more liberated after the release of her 2022 Apple documentary ‘My Mind and Me’.

“I definitely feel free of it… Sometimes I get triggered. It’s not that I’m ashamed of my past, it’s just that I’ve worked so hard to find my own way. I don’t want to be who I was. I want to be who I am,” Gomez said about her Disney past.

On being questioned whether she was prevented from speaking her mind during her child acting career, “Of course. I wasn’t a wild child by any means, but I was on Disney, so I had to make sure not to say ‘What the hell?’ in front of anyone.”

“It’s stuff that I was also putting on myself to be the best role model I could be. Now I think being the best role model is being honest, even with the ugly and complicated parts of yourself,” she added, reported Variety.

In ‘Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me’, the singer discusses her mental health challenges in greater depth than ever before.

While Gomez was concerned about exposing such vulnerability to the public, she claimed the response to the documentary’s premiere has been nothing but liberating.

“Now I don’t feel like I’m lying to people… It’s not that I was lying… I was scared of what people would think or that people wouldn’t hire me. Now I don’t think that way. I understand that if it doesn’t feel good to me, then I need to step back and evaluate. Is this friendship giving me something? Is this project a really good one?” Gomez said, as per Variety. (ANI)

  • Disney+ in Hong Kong drops ‘Simpsons’ episode with ‘forced labour’ mention

    By AFP

HONG KONG: An episode of “The Simpsons” that refers to “forced labour camps” in China is nowhere to be found on the Disney+ streaming service in Hong Kong amid growing censorship concerns in the city.

Hong Kong once boasted significant artistic and cultural freedoms compared to mainland China, but authorities have clamped down on dissent following democracy protests in 2019, including stepping up film censorship.

Episode 2 of the US animated hits’ 34th season included the line: “Behold the wonders of China. Bitcoin mines, forced labour camps where children make smartphones, and romance.”

“One Angry Lisa”, which first aired last October, could not be accessed on Disney+ using a Hong Kong connection but is available elsewhere, AFP confirmed.

It is the second time in three years that the streaming service’s Hong Kong version has dropped a Simpsons episode that satirised China.

The previously affected episode showed the Simpsons visiting Beijing’s Tiananmen Square — the site of a deadly 1989 crackdown on democracy protesters — finding a sign there that read: “On this site, in 1989, nothing happened.”

The Hong Kong government and Disney did not immediately provide comment.

In 2021, Hong Kong passed censorship laws forbidding broadcasts that might breach a broad national security law that China imposed on the city.

Censors have since ordered directors to make cuts to their films and refused permission for others to be shown.

While those rules do not cover streaming services, authorities have warned that online platforms are still subject to the national security law, which criminalises the broadly defined crimes of subversion, succession, terrorism and collusion with foreign forces.

In recent years, Hollywood has been accused of bending to China’s censorship regime to tap into its vast consumer base and billion-dollar box office.

Beijing has long denied accusations of torture and forced labour in the far-western Xinjiang region, even as a recent United Nations report found the allegations credible.

Rights groups say more than a million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are detained in what the US State Department and others have said amounts to genocide.

In 2020, Disney came under fire for filming the live-action Mulan remake in Xinjiang, with local government agencies thanked in the credits.

  • ‘Indiana Jones 5’ trailer unveils de-aged Harrison Ford

    By IANS

LOS ANGELES: Disney revealed the first trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” which is the official title for the fifth instalment of Harrison Ford’s whip-cracking, adventure franchise. On top of that, the trailer showcases a de-aged Harrison Ford as Indy back in his glory days of archaeology and adventures.

The film is scheduled for release on June 30, 2023.

The trailer opens with some classic, death-defying Indy antics as he jumps between speeding tuk-tuk cars. There are also shots of him running along a moving train and riding a motorcycle in the rain after a plane, but “those days have come and gone,” Ford says as a retired Indy who has stuck to teaching, reports Variety.

“I don’t believe in magic, but a few times in my life I’ve seen things. Things I can’t explain,” he narrates over first looks at villains played by Mads Mikkelsen and Antonio Banderas, plus Indy’s goddaughter, played by Phoebe Waller-Bridge. John Williams’ iconic “Indiana Jones” score crashes in as Indy picks up his fedora, narrowly avoids a train on horseback and bullwhips some henchmen to close out the trailer.

Indiana’s latest outing is set in the 1960s during the Space Race between the U.S. and Soviet Russia. Unlike previous films, George Lucas did not write the story for “Indiana Jones 5” and Steven Spielberg is not the director.

Instead, both of those roles will be filled by James Mangold, who is known for his films like ‘Logan’, ‘Ford vs. Ferrari’, ‘3:10 to Yuma’ and more.

Spielberg is still attached as an executive producer, and Lucas, the original creator of the film franchise, is credited with some involvement in the writer’s room.

Co-starring alongside Ford is John Rhys-Davies, who is reprising the role of Sallah, last seen in 1989’s ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’, as well as new additions like Mikkelsen, Banderas, Thomas Kretschmann, Boyd Holbrook, Shaunette Rene Wilson and Toby Jones.

Waller-Bridge, the Emmy-winning creator and star of Prime Video’s ‘Fleabag’, is also making a first appearance in the franchise as Indy’s goddaughter Helena, who composer Williams has described as “an adventuress, and also a femme fatale.”

Not only is “Indiana Jones 5” the last hurrah for 80-year-old Ford, but also 90-year-old composer Williams, who confirmed the film would likely be his last.

“At the moment I’m working on ‘Indiana Jones 5,’ which Harrison Ford – who’s quite a bit younger than I am – I think has announced will be his last film,” Williams told the Associated Press in a June 2022 interview. “So, I thought: If Harrison can do it, then perhaps I can, also.”
