  • The fan who became a superhero

    Express News Service

Marvel is back, and finally, with a series that feels closer to home for us. Ms Marvel, which premiered yesterday, follows the trials and tribulations of a 16-year-old Pakistani-American high school student from Jersey City who ends up with superpowers. With many references we can relate to, including Shah Rukh Khan films and parts of ‘Oh Nanbaa’ from Rajinikanth’s Lingaa getting used, the series is Marvel’s tentative look into the world of South Asian diaspora and is its first live-action content with a Muslim superhero.

Pakistani-Canadian Iman Vellani, who plays the titular role, thought the casting call was a scam. “I sent in a rather academic resume, and the casting call turned out to be real! As we began making progress, I started making excuses out of fear of failure. But I knew that my 10-year-old self would hate me if I didn’t give it a shot. Two days later, I got another call,” recounts Iman, who was in Toronto at the time. “I was asked whether I had a lawyer. They wanted me to fly to LA, and I was like, ‘Uh, I have a math test!’ Next thing, I’m in LA with my dad. This was the greatest trip of my life, and I was fangirling over Sarah Finn and Lewis D-Esposito. Then the pandemic hit, and they sent me an email saying that they had to figure out some stuff and assured me I was still in the running. Meanwhile, I had to figure out my university on my side, and in June 2020, I sent in the last self-tape and then, we did a screen test over Zoom. They cast me when I was on the last day of high school.”

Iman was already a big fan of the Ms Marvel comics. “I’m so excited that people can finally see what I saw when I picked up those comics for the first time and fell in love with Kamala and her world. It’s truly a love letter to all MCU fans.” Iman says Ms Marvel is a different character when compared to other superheroes in her age group. “Ms Marvel understands fan culture on a cellular level, and this elevated the storytelling in a unique way. She’s a 16-year-old kid, with super-powers which we have seen before. But she’s also a fan of every other hero within the MCU canon.

That fascination and excitement are reflective of real-life Marvel fans; so that’s why we relate to her. She reacts like we all would if we were to get such powers,” says Iman, who goes on to explain that the series doesn’t necessarily get too drawn into the cultural, religious aspects of her personality. “I don’t think those were her main markers. They were part of her life, sure. She’s another normal girl who wakes up, goes to school, prays, and eats. We didn’t set out to make a show about a Pakistani Muslim; she is just an Avengers-loving, fanfic-writing dork, which also happens to be a Pakistani Muslim. We have balanced it all quite well.”

Ms. Marvel is now streaming on Disney+ Hotstar.

  • ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ to stream on Disney+ Hotstar from June 22

    By PTI

MUMBAI: Benedict Cumberbatch-starrer “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” will start streaming on Disney+ Hotstar from June 22.

In an Instagram post on Thursday night, the streaming service said the film will be available on its platform in five languages — Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and English.

“Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness streams from June 22 in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada and English,” the post read.

Directed by Sam Raimi, the movie is a sequel to 2016’s “Doctor Strange”, which introduced Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange aka Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).

The movie follows Doctor Strange as he tries to contain the aftermath of the multiverse-fracturing spell he cast in the 2021 hit film “Spider-Man: No Way Home” — which caused villains from across the multiverse to spill over into the central MCU timeline.

“Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” also stars Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams.

The film was released theatrically last month.

  • Maisie Williams says she would do Bollywood movie if it has ‘singing and dancing’

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: “Game of Thrones” alum Maisie Williams has never been to India but she is a fan of Indian food and would love to do a Bollywood movie.

The actor, who became a global sensation with her role of Arya Stark in HBO’s “Game of Thrones”, sat down with fellow British star Thomas Brodie-Sangster to discuss all things India as part of a promotional video for their latest series “Pistols”.

Williams, 25, said that she loves Indian food after she got introduced to it through an Indian who used to stay in the same building few years ago.

“I’ve never been to India, so the best Indian food I’ve had has been here in the UK. I used to live above an Indian and I would get food from there every single night from my way to home for probably like six to eight months,” the actor said in the video, posted on the official YouTube page of streaming service Disney+ Hotstar.

“I was at a dance college at the time and was burning a lot of energy. I could not get away doing that now but it was so delicious and the best Indian food that I had,” she added.

Brodie-Sangster, who also featured in “Game of Thrones”, recalled his recent trip to Jaipur, Rajasthan, where he had delicious “garlic naan with fresh ghee” at a local restaurant.

“Jaipur was very cool, it’s the pink city. I’d like to see Goa and explore the South (India) bit more, or Mumbai, Bombay. Danny (Boyle) spent a lot of time there and he said that was amazing,” the 32-year-old actor added.

Asked whether she has seen a Bollywood movie, Williams said she hasn’t but would love to be a part of one if it has “singing and dancing”.

“I haven’t had the pleasure to watch any Bollywood film yet, but I would love to be part of one with a good script, singing and dancing,” the actor said.

Williams and Brodie-Sangster’s latest series is the Danny Boyle-directed “Pistol”, about the British punk rock band Sex Pistols, which was formed in 1975.

Based on Steve Jones’ 2017 memoir “Lonely Boy: Tales from a Sex Pistol”, the series tells the story of the iconic band’s tumultuous journey to punk stardom, how the band came together and how they changed the music business.

The series, which is currently streaming on Disney+ Hotstar, has been created by “Moulin Rouge!” writer Craig Pearce.

It features Williams as punk icon Jordan, whose real name was Pamela Rooke, and Brodie-Sangster as Malcolm McLaren.

  • There’s no standing apart, it’s about standing together: Hailee Steinfield on Marvel show ‘Hawkeye’

    By PTI

NEW DELHI: Hollywood star Hailee Steinfeld says headlining her own Marvel project felt like becoming a part of a team and her endeavour was to showcase her credentials as a team player.

One of the rising stars in Hollywood, Steinfeld makes her debut in the highly-successful Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) with her upcoming series “Hawkeye”, co-starring Jeremy Renner.

The Disney+ Hotstar series introduces Steinfeld as Kate Bishop, an ardent follower of Clint Barton aka Hawkeye (Renner).

She becomes his protege as they confront enemies from his past.

“I just feel so lucky to be a part of this show. Becoming a part of the MCU feels like I’ve become a part of a team. And there’s no standing apart, it’s about standing together. So I feel very lucky to be involved at all,” the 24-year-old actor told PTI during a group Zoom interview.

With MCU expanding in all sorts of directions with its post-“Avengers: Endgame” projects, there is bound to be pressure on newcomers to make their mark.

Steinfeld, who previously starred in movies such as “True Grit”, “Begin Again”, “The Edge of Seventeen” and “Bumblebee”, however, is already an established star in her own right.

The actor said she was was glad to work with Renner, a veteran figure in the MCU and one of the original members of the Avengers team.

“We just met and we were on our way with this thing. Everything happened so fast and we sort of jumped right into the deep end. And I think that sort of left us no choice but to become a team because we were taking all this on together. We had a lot of laughs and we had a great time, so that obviously helped and we got to do some of the coolest things ever. So, we had some fun, little bonding moments as we worked on this series.”

Renner, she said, was a pillar of support and a true mentor on the show.

“It’s really been so incredible having Jeremy throughout this experience because it truly has been unlike anything I’ve ever experienced in the past. It was something that I could not have really prepared myself for and so I’m grateful that I had him and his support and his mentorship through this whole thing. I really did feel that collaboration and that team very early on and it was also very cool just to watch him do his thing as a fan of the Avengers,” she added.

Steinfeld has been acting since the age of 10 and found fame when she was cast as Mattie Ross in critically-acclaimed Westerner “True Grit”.

Over the years, her portrayal of strong-willed and headstrong characters has won her praise from  critics and fans.

The actor said there is both an element of deliberateness as well as coincidence in her finding such amazing characters.

“There’s obviously something there that I love and that I’m drawn to. But I do think that these qualities aren’t necessarily the qualities that I actively searched for in the characters that I play. But I do love it when I discover that they all happen to have that in common, that there are these strong-willed and strong-minded young women who have a point of view and are trying to figure out their place in this world and assert that position,” Steinfeld said.

“Hawkeye” has been created by Jonathan Igla and co-directed by Rhys Thomas and the filmmaker duo Bert & Bertie.

The show also stars Vera Farmiga, Fra Fee, Tony Dalton, Zahn McClarnon, Brian d’Arcy James, and Alaqua Cox.

“Hawkeye” will start streaming on Disney+ Hotstar in English, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam on Wednesday.

  • Abhay Deol, filmmaker Manjari Makijany discuss their latest Disney film ‘Spin’

    Express News Service

The latest Disney Channel original film, Spin, has an Indian-American father-daughter duo, Arvind (Abhay Deol) and Rhea (Avantika), running a restaurant named Spirit of India.

The film’s delightful opening sequence—which begins with Rhea serving scrumptious Indian cuisine to American guests, and ends with Rhea’s Nani, Asha (Meera Syal), gleefully shaking a leg to Asha Bhosle’s wonderful Jab Chhaye Mera Jadoo—encapsulates this ethos and ‘spirit’.

“It was imperative that we represented Indian culture authentically,” says filmmaker Manjari Makijany. “Right from the Indian accent to the interior design of an Indian-American household, including the walls and cushions, the detailing had to be on point. We shipped beautiful outfits and jewelry from India to achieve it. Even the food that appears in the film, for instance, was decided by us. It was a fun experience!”

In addition to her lived-in experience in India, Manjari attributes a major chunk of the film’s ‘desi flavour’ to the influence Bollywood films have left on her while growing up.

“Asha is a Bollywood fan, and dances to Hindi music. It is shot in true-blue Bollywood style, but the challenge was: how do we do it without making it look cheesy, while also retaining the celebratory essence? We had to strike a balance between culture and story,” adds Manjari, whose debut feature, Skater Girl, premiered on Netflix to positive reception earlier this year.

As opposed to Skater Girl, which follows Prerna, a teenager from Rajasthan battling rampant conservative notions to pursue skateboarding, Spin is a rather colourful film.

“It was the story that drew me towards this film. The opportunity to tell the story of an Indian-American protagonist by infusing my personal experiences into the music, colours, and vibrancy of our festivals to a mainstream audience through a Disney platform… I found it beyond fascinating,” Manjari adds.

For actor Abhay Deol, who plays the benign Arvind though, the attraction was the prospect of being a part of the Disney world. “I was glad to be a ‘Disney dad’, if not a ‘Disney prince’,” Abhay says, smiling. Sharing how dearly he holds memories associated with Disney films from his childhood, he says, “When we think of Disney, our first impressions are of fairy tales, fables, magic, and family values. As we grow older, life becomes more ‘real’ and mundane. So, when I want to revisit my childhood, watching Disney films serves as a beautiful reminder of a time when imagination felt more real than reality.”

Having worked with Reema Kagti, Rajshree Ojha, and Megha Ramaswamy in the past, Spin is the fourth time Abhay has joined forces with a female filmmaker in a feature film. The Dev D-actor however underplays this: “When you are creating something, it doesn’t matter whether you are male or female; what’s important is the individual’s vision and clarity of thought. I wouldn’t say that women are more sensible than men; for me, they are equal. Their talent defines them, not their gender.”

Speaking of his experience of shooting for Spin, Abhay adds, “It was nice to do a children’s film; it was breezy, light, and happy. I haven’t played many dad characters in my career, and it felt nice to imbibe that feeling; I almost grew protective of my onscreen children by the end of the shooting. Moreover, I’m glad to have worked with Meera Syal (British comedian and actor), who I have always looked up to.” Abhay also believes that Spin will be paving the way for many more ethnic stories, thanks to the studio that has given the film a wide reach. “By making this film and representing us in such a beautiful light, I feel they (Disney) have, knowingly or unknowingly, opened a pandora’s box of opportunities for an entire community.”

For Manjari, on the other hand, filmmaking is more intimate—it’s about self-discovery. Both her films are coming-of-age stories that follow protagonists on a path to embrace rather unconventional pursuits: skateboarding in Skater Girl and deejaying in Spin.

The filmmaker says that she steps into the shoes of her protagonists before entering the film set. “While filming Skater Girl, I let my protagonist step on the skateboard only after I learned to ride it. It’s the same in the case of Spin. I underwent a masterclass to learn deejaying along with actors to gain a rudimentary understanding of the technique. I have an interest in exploring these unconventional avenues and these are the stories that excite me the most.”

  • Ekta Kapoor, Vikram Bhatt welcome OTT guidelines, Onir calls it ‘death of good content’

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Welcoming government’s guidelines for OTT (over-the-top) platforms on Thursday, film personalities Ekta Kapoor, Priyadarshan and Vikram Bhatt said there cannot be creative freedom without responsibility, while producer Pritish Nandy said there was a need to tread carefully with the regulations.

Kapoor, Bhatt, Priyadarshan — all prominent names in Bollywood as producers and directors — said the guidelines are a “great step” by the government.

Nandy and Onir had a different take, with the former saying that it was crucial for the government to not allow a “heavy hand” to fall on OTTs, while the latter criticising the move.

The government on Thursday said a ‘code of ethics’ and three-tier grievance redressal mechanism would be applicable for OTT platforms, such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar, news publishers and digital media.

Seeking to establish a soft touch regulatory framework, the government said OTT platforms would have to self-classify the content into five age-based categories – U (Universal), U/A 7+ (years), U/A 13+, U/A 16+, and A (Adult).

Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar said such platforms would be required to implement parental locks for content classified as U/A 13+ or higher, and reliable age-verification mechanisms for content classified as ‘A’.

Kapoor, a major Bollywood and TV producer who also runs OTT platform ALT Balaji, said the new regulations will provide a level-playing field.

“Heartening to see the new guidelines that provide a level playing field for digital news media and OTT platforms. #ResponsibleFreedom,” Kapoor tweeted.

Nandy, who has backed the International Emmy-nominated Amazon Prime Video series “Four More Shots Please”, said while grievance redressal mechanisms are fine, they rely on “very careful and circumspect actions by the authorities in power”.

“One mistake and the entire credibility of the mechanism can disappear. That is what we must understand and reckon with in these difficult times. Right now, it is just a beginning and the government ought to tread carefully if it wants to emerge as a global soft power,” Nandy told PTI.

“We are very good at what we do in India but till the foreign OTT platforms came in, we were stuck in that jejune Bollywood space. Now is the time to mature, grow and contend with the world, show everyone the creative genius of India,” he added.

Bhatt, who has made web shows such as 2017 horror “Gehraiyaan” and thriller franchise “Twisted”, said it is only fair to inform the audience about the kind of content they are about to watch.

“The government isn’t saying ‘do not make this. ‘All they’re saying is, whatever you make, there should be enough information out there for the viewers to know what kind of shows they’re watching,” he told PTI.

It is not censorship but merely a guideline to put in place a redressal system, Bhatt said.

“They’re asking to have an internal redressal system of three tier. Basically, they are asking us to handle our own problems and not bring it to them. I don’t see a problem in what has happened today. There’s no cause of concern as there’s no censorship,” he added.

“Heri Pheri” director Priyadarshan tweeted the guidelines “respect the artistic freedom while providing an avenue for redressal of citizen grievances.”

Onir, known for films such as “My Brother. Nikhil” and “I Am”, criticised the guidelines for not favouring content creators.”

“The death of cinema and good content. Stab the artist and keep everyone happy. The worst that a democracy can do to an artist is this regulation of OTT,” he said.

CBFC chairperson and lyricist Prasoon Joshi said responsible and accountable mechanisms will only bring in “more quality and maturity in a commercial creative industry”.

“Measures taken for a level playing field and empowering consumers would provide clarity for content creators of emerging platforms,” Joshi tweeted.

Some industry insiders tweeted their support using the hashtag #ResponsibleFreedom, previously also shared by Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Javadekar.

BJP MP and actor Ravi Kishan also thanked the prime minister and said “#ResponsibleFreedom was the need of the hour.” Director Nila Madhab Panda, known for films like “I am Kalam” and “Kadvi Hawa”, said digital media must be used responsibly.

“Freedom comes with responsibility, digital media can do a lot of good if used correctly, great decision by the government, @PrakashJavdekar Sir @rsprasad sir, also giving a forum for users grievances is the correct way ahead.#ResponsibleFreedom #OTTGuidelines,” Panda wrote on Twitter.

Despite multiple attempts, prominent filmmakers, representatives of OTT platforms such as Netflix and Amazon remained unavailable for comment.

The OTT censorship has been a cause of concern among filmmakers, writers and actors for some time as many believe it will curtail their creativity on the new platform, which has witnessed a boom in India in recent years.

The streamers have been self-regulating their content as per Indian laws until recently but some of the shows have stirred controversy, most recently Amazon Prime Video’s show “Tandav”, which was accused of hurting religious sentiments.

A scene in the show led to multiple FIRs on directors, actors and the India head of the platform, prompting the streamer to chop the scenes from the political drama.

Other shows that have angered a section of people include Netflix’s “Leila” and “A Suitable Boy” and Amazon’s “Paatal Lok”.
