  • Disney+ To Crack Down On Password Sharing Service From June 2024; Check Details |

New Delhi: Disney+, the popular streaming platform is set to implement restrictions on password sharing, following in the footsteps of Netflix. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced plans for this change, describing it as the company’s “launching our first real foray into password sharing” which is scheduled to launch in June 2024.

While specifics regarding the policy’s implementation and whether it will limit password sharing beyond households remain undisclosed, the CEO emphasized the initiative’s alignment with Disney’s aim to enhance streaming revenue. Iger highlighted the importance of streaming for Disney’s profit objectives, underscoring the need to address password sharing as a crucial strategy. The company aims to roll out initial measures in June, starting with selected countries, with plans for global expansion by September. “In June, we’ll be launching our first real foray into password sharing. Just a few countries in a few markets, but then it will grow significantly with a full rollout in September,” Iger mentioned during the interview. The plan for implementing the crackdown involves two steps: Firstly, a launch in certain markets by June 2024, followed by a global expansion and full implementation by September 2024.

“We feel great about the engagement of those Disney subs who are not getting Hulu who are now watching more programs that were on Hulu, including Shogun.. We have to increase engagement. We need the technological tools to lower churn, create more stickiness. It’s things like recommendation engines, getting to know our customers better,” Iger stated to CNBC.

Furthermore, Iger disclosed that Disney intends to link user identities across multiple platforms such as Hulu, Disney+, ESPN, and cable. This integrated identity system is deemed crucial for implementing their forthcoming password-sharing limitations.

CEO Bob Iger has ambitious goals for the streaming industry, including launching a separate ESPN streaming platform. He is also optimistic that Disney+ will become profitable by the end of 2024, and the introduction of paid account sharing could expedite this objective.

  • AI can’t replace Mickey Mouse, says voice of Disney mascot

    By AFP

BURBANK: Aw, gee! The technology driving artificial intelligence sure is swell, but it could never capture the essence of Mickey Mouse, according to the man who voices Disney’s mascot.

As part of Disney’s upcoming 100th-anniversary celebration, AFP spoke with animators, archivists and Mickey voice actor Bret Iwan about the company’s past and future, including the potential for AI — a topic currently roiling Hollywood.

“Gosh, I would say, of course there’s amazing technology being developed with AI, and it’s so impressive,” said Iwan.

“But I don’t think anything can replace the heart of a character and more importantly, the heart of storytelling.”

Artificial intelligence, and the threat it poses to professions across the entertainment industry, has been a constant source of hand-wringing in Hollywood this summer.

AFP’s visit to Disney’s sprawling studio near Los Angeles came during the ongoing strike by writers, in part over fears that AI could replace them.

The issue is also among demands being negotiated by Hollywood actors who are worried about AI cloning their voices and likenesses, and who could strike as soon as Thursday.

But for Iwan, character and storytelling are “unique to a performer, a writer, an animator, an artist, a creator.”

“I have to believe that that part is what’s going to hold out, and keep real people doing the job for a while!”

Iwan is one of just four people to have ever been Mickey’s official voice.

Mickey’s falsetto was first voiced by company founder Walt Disney himself, with 1928’s “Steamboat Willie.” Two other men each voiced the character for more than three decades.

“I hope I get to do it as long as this holds out,” said Iwan, pointing to his vocal cords.

    Replicating realism

In animation — perhaps the art form most associated with Disney — the role of sophisticated computers is well-established.

Computer-generated animation has long overtaken traditional hand-drawn artistry as the genre’s dominant form.

While humans are still designing and creating those films, the use of AI to generate the credits for the Disney+ show “Secret Invasion” recently triggered anger.

ALSO READ | ‘Don’t steal our voices’: dubbing artists confront AI threat

Eric Goldberg — the Disney animator who designed the Genie in “Aladdin,” and a stalwart champion of hand-drawn animation — believes AI is unlikely to impact his work.

“I think AI has less of a chance of affecting hand-drawn animation than it does computer animation because AI is about replicating realism,” he said.

“The characters that I do, the Genie’s head can turn into a toaster! Which you can’t do with an AI character!”

“So hand-drawn gives us a little bit of an advantage that way.”

Goldberg recently finished training five new Disney hand-drawn apprentices, and believes there will always “be a core of us who want to see hand-drawn animation.”

“Because we have to use our imaginations so much to represent hand-drawn characters, because of the flexibility of what they can do, I don’t think AI is going to be a problem to that side of medium,” said Goldberg.

“As long as there are people who still want to do it!”

  • Disney ropes in Thomas Kail to direct live-action ‘Moana’ movie

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Thomas Kail, the Tony Award-winning director of the famous Broadway play “Hamilton”, will tackle the live-action remake of the popular movie “Moana”.

The movie will mark Kail’s feature narrative directorial debut after he directed episodes of shows such as “Grease: Live” and “Fosse/Verdon”, according to entertainment news outlet The Hollywood Reporter.

The project was announced by Dwayne Johnson and the Hollywood Studio last month.

Johnson, who had voiced the character of Maui, the demigod of the wind and sea, in the 2016 animated feature, will return for the remake.

Jared Bush, who wrote the screenplay for the original movie, penned the remake, along with Dana Ledoux Miller.

Set in ancient Polynesia, the film follows the story of Moana, the strong-willed daughter of a chief of a coastal village, who is chosen by the ocean itself to reunite a mystical relic with the goddess Te Fiti.

When a blight strikes her island, Moana sets sail in search of Maui, a legendary demigod, in the hope of returning the relic to Te Fiti and saving her people.

Just like the animated movie, the new take will also celebrate the islands, communities and traditions of Pacific Islanders as seen through the eyes of a young woman eager to pave her own path.

Actor Auli’i Cravalho, who voiced Moana in the original, will executive produce with Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.

John Musker and Ron Clements directed the original movie, which had a story by Clements, Musker, Chris Williams, Don Hall, Pamela Ribon, Aaron Kandell and Jordan Kandell.

  • Jeremy Renner attends premiere, months after snowplough crush

    By Associated Press

LOS ANGELES: Jeremy Renner attended the premiere for his new series Tuesday, capping a remarkable recovery less than four months after the “Avengers” star was nearly killed in a snowplough accident.

Renner was surrounded by family and supporters at the “Rennervations” premiere in Los Angeles, where he posed for photos and did interviews, at times making use of a cane and a knee scooter. At one point he flashed photographers a thumbs-up sign while moving down the carpet.

Renner was crushed by his 7-ton snowplough on New Year’s Day while trying to help free a relative’s car at his Nevada home. The actor has said he broke numerous bones and suffered a collapsed lung and pierced liver in the accident.

“Rennervations,” which premieres on Disney+ on Wednesday, follows Renner as he transforms large vehicles into community spaces for young people in India, Mexico, Chicago and Nevada. The purposes range from serving as a mobile music studio to a water filtration truck for a community in India.

Renner said his aim was to give young people access to things they might not already have and present opportunities they might not know existed.

Renner wrote the theme song for the show, something he did while working on another show. “I use music and piano to write songs and use it like therapy for me,” he said.

Construction and music have been creative outlets for Renner, who is best known for playing the superhero Hawkeye in the Marvel “Avengers” films and his own spin-off TV series.

Marvel co-star Anthony Mackie appears in the show, and Renner said the secret to their friendship is they “laugh a lot.”

Renner, a two-time Oscar nominee, told Diane Sawyer in an interview that aired that while he thought he might die from his injuries, he refused to be “haunted” by the accident.
