  • IPL 2021 Quaifier 1: Experienced Chennai Super Kings hold edge over Delhi Capitals

    By PTI

DUBAI: Chennai Super Kings’ old guards with an uncanny knack of owning the big stage at right moments, will start as favourites against a solid Delhi Capitals line-up led by ‘young pretender’ Rishabh Pant in what promises to be an exciting first IPL Qualifier here on Sunday.

Capitals were the best team in the league and their 20-point finish at the group stage was an indication of their consistent performances which didn’t dip due to the COVID-19 forced break.

Similarly, CSK are now back in familiar settings of play-off rounds, something that they have been done 11 out of 12 times although losing three matches on the bounce wouldn’t have amused their all-powerful skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

DC, on the other hand, were handed a rude jolt by Kona Bharat’s last-ball six in their last group league game against Royal Challengers Bangalore.

It didn’t change their pole position but did enough to shake them from their stupor.

CSK, over the years, have been in final eight times and won on three occasions which speak volumes of the team’s ability to lift their game just when it’s required most.

That’s the reason why CSK is not one of those franchises which unleashes new talent by dozens like other franchises.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is an exception as he could be called a pure CSK product after more than a decade.

Dhoni has a simple cricketing philosophy — rely on tried and tested individuals who are battle-hardened and thus he has always punted on the likes of Ravindra jadeja, Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina, Dwayne Bravo and Faf du Plessis.

These are players, who have been there and done that.

People who can control phases and win pressure situations which more often than not results in victories.

Add Josh Hazlewood or Moeen Ali, who are also international regulars in that mix and the former India captain knows exactly what is the kind of combination that he needs to put on the park.

As much as one speaks about team effort, no one knows more than Dhoni that T20 is perhaps one form of cricket, where individuals win matches.

Dhoni knows that even though his batting form (96 runs in 14 games) has deserted him years back (since 2015-16) and an IPL legend like Raina (160 in 12 games) is a pale shadow of his once destructive self, he still has Gaikwad (533 runs) and Du Plessis (546), who have more often than not provided solid starts and the menacing Jadeja (227 runs) providing final flourish.

Similarly, Shardul Thakur (18 wickets in 14 games) has given runs at an expensive economy rate of 8.57 but still the breakthroughs have been important.

No one knows more than Dwayne Bravo (12 wickets) as to how one can fool the batters by changing the pace of his deliveries at the death.

Hazlewood hasn’t found form but Dhoni has enormous patience in players he believes in and he is banking on that devastating first spell from the Aussie that can wreak havoc.

It could happen against Delhi Capitals, as their batting despite 10 wins, hasn’t exactly inspired confidence of highest level.

Prithvi Shaw (401 runs) and Shikhar Dhawan (544 runs) have had their share of starts but in the UAE leg, they haven’t exactly dominated.

Skipper Pant (362 runs) has been scratchy at best and Marcus Stoinis’ absence due to injury did affect their balance as they lack big-hitters at the death save Shimron Hetmyer.

DC’s strength has been their bowling attack — Avesh Khan (22 wickets), Axar Patel (15 wickets), Kagiso Rabada (13 wickets) and Anrich Nortje, who has taken nine wickets but an economy rate of 5.59 over six games.

DC’s bowling attack has been right on the money without being taken to cleaners but Pant would hope that law of averages don’t catch up with them and Nortje and Rabada is able to unsettle Gaikwad with short balls, which has been Maharashtra batter’s weak point.

But yes, even Dhoni would admit that Raina and Rayudu in what would be their last season for CSK, would want to make some tangible contribution with the willow.

Even skipper himself needs to put his hand up as he has not been able to handle raw pace anymore.

  • Dhoni to Take Last Flight to Ranchi When Teammates Reach Home Safe & Secure: Report

Chennai Super Kings skipper and former India captain MS Dhoni has assured his players that he would be the last person to leave the CSK camp as he would be overseeing that each and every one of his colleagues have left for home safely and securely. ‘Mahi bhai’ as he is known in his team told his players on a video chat that since the IPL was happening in India, foreigners must leave first and then the domestic players should think of leaving, meanwhile he will be the last person to leave, concludes a report in The Indian Express.

“Mahibhai said that he will be the last person to leave the hotel. He wanted foreigners to leave first, then the Indian players. He will be taking the last flight tomorrow when everyone reaches their home safe and secure,” a member of CSK told The Indian Express. CSK has organised a charter flight to ferry its players from Mumbai. A ten-seater aircraft took some of its players to Mumbai and Rajkot in the morning. Later in the evening another flight was arranged to take players to Bangalore and Chennai. Dhoni will leave for his hometown Ranchi on Thursday evening.

Only Mumbai Indians will be sending their overseas players by chartered flights. These flights will be leaving for New Zealand, West Indies via South Africa. Mumbai Indians has a sizable population of Kiwi cricketers this includes Trent Boult, Adam Milne, James Neesham, Shane Bond and they are likely to be joined by other Kiwi cricketers from other teams. Meanwhile one aircraft will take off for Trinidad (where Kieron Pollard lives). It will travel to West Indies via Johannesburg in South Africa where they will offload a number of South African cricketers-Quinton de Kock and Marco Jansen. This flight will leave in the next 24 to 48 hours.

  • AR Rahman dedicates ‘Chale Chalo’ from ‘Lagaan’ to CSK skipper MS Dhoni

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has dedicated ‘Chale Chalo’ from the movie Lagaan to Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni as it motivates to play together. Rahman also dedicated the song ‘Mangta Hai Kya’ from the movie Rangeela to CSK all-rounder Suresh Raina.

Speaking on Star Sports show Cricket Live, Rahman dedicated songs to CSK stars Dhoni and Raina, “I would like to dedicate the song ‘Chale Chalo’ from the movie Lagaan to MS Dhoni, as it motivates people to play cricket together. And for Suresh Raina, I would like to dedicate the song ‘Mangta Hai Kya’, because whenever I went to Bangalore, they were listening to a lot of songs from Rangeela.”

Earlier in the day, former India batsman Gautam Gambhir said that Dhoni should bat at number four or five and not below that for his side.

Dhoni generally comes in to bat at number 7 and in the first game against Delhi Capitals he failed to get going and got out for a two-ball duck. His side lost the game despite setting up a target of 189 as Shikhar Dhawan (85) and Prithvi Shaw (72) provided a flying start to the side and stitched a 138-run stand for the opening wicket.

Speaking on Star Sports show Cricket Live, Gambhir said, “MS Dhoni should be batting higher, that’s what matters because ultimately people should start leading from the front. We keep mentioning this thing that a leader needs to lead from the front. You can’t be leading, when you’re batting at No.7. Yes, there are issues in their bowling line up.”

Gautam further added that Dhoni is not as attacking as he used to be and it is better for him to bat up in the order and set his eyes on the ball. “Plus, he is not the MS Dhoni, which he used to be probably four or five years back, where he could just come in and start taking on the bowlers from the word go. For me, I think he needs to bat at number four/ five. Nothing below that,” Gambhir said.

CSK will next play against Rajasthan Royals at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday.

  • IPL 2021: Dhoni fined for maintaining slow over-rate against Delhi Capitals

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) skipper MS Dhoni has been fined Rs 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over-rate against Delhi Capitals in the Indian Premier League (IPL) clash on Saturday.

“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the IPL statement read.

Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw played knocks of 85 and 72 respectively to help Delhi Capitals chase down the target of 189 runs, set by the Dhoni-led team. The victory must have been very special for Rishabh Pant as it was his first game as Delhi Capitals’ captain.

Earlier, Suresh Raina smashed a sensational fifty in his comeback game before Sam Curran’s masterclass in the death overs powered CSK to 188/7 in their 20 overs.

After the game, Dhoni said that “a lot depended on dew” before praising his side’s batsmen for taking the team’s score to 188.

“A lot depended on dew, and that factor played on our mind from the start and that’s why we wanted to get as many runs as possible. The batters did a good job to reach 188 because it was tacky until dew settled in 50 minutes later. We could have bowled slightly better, and if batters are hitting you over the fields, that’s fair enough,” Dhoni told hosts broadcasters Star Sports after the match.

“The execution of the bowlers was poor and there were boundary balls that they bowled, but the bowlers will have learned and they will apply that in the future games. The opposition has half an hour in a 7:30 start when the pitch is really tacky and the ball stops a bit, so we need to get 15-20 runs extra to be safe. If we get dew consistently, then 200 will be a must on a pitch like this. Their (Delhi) bowlers bowled a great line when it was stopping and seaming a bit, and the openers got really good balls in which they got out and that can happen in a game like this,” he added.

CSK will now play against Punjab Kings at Wankhede Stadium on April 16.

  • Apprentice vs Master as rookie Pant takes on ‘the colossus’ Dhoni

The head-to-head of 15-8 is massively in favour of Dhoni’s team but the Capitals completed a double over CSK last season and are definitely the more balanced side of the two.

The baton has been passed on to the next generation in Indian cricket, and young Rishabh Pant has slowly managed to get out of the monumentesque shadow of MS Dhoni. But the latter is still around in the Indian Premier League, and Pant will have to put all that he has learnt from Dhoni into the field when he takes on the master and his ‘Yellow Brigade’ as Chennai Super Kings and DelhI Capitals open their seasons on Saturday.

The venue is neutral for both teams as they play at the Wankhede Stadium. The head-to-head of 15-8 is massively in favour of ‘s team but the Capitals completed a double over CSK last season and are definitely the more balanced side of the two.

They will miss their captain Shreyas Iyer and his calm presence in the middle but the team boasts of big Indian names like Shikhar Dhawan, newly appointed captain Pant and Ajinkya Rahane in the batting department.

  • Dinesh Karthik Joins Top, Exclusive Dream11 IPL Club Led By MS Dhoni,

The ongoing Dream11 IPL is coming to its business end. However, teams continue to have a strong chance to qualify for the knockout stages. Looking at the current Dream11 IPL points table, Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore are almost certain to qualify but the battle for fourth place is heating up between Punjab, Kolkata, Hyderabad and Rajasthan.

While Kolkata will be looking to keep their chances alive despite losing to Punjab on Monday, former skipper Dinesh Karthik added a small feather to his career after achieving a milestone during Kolkata vs Punjab match on Monday. Karthik’s feat saw him join the likes of Rohit Sharma, MS Dhoni, and Suresh Raina in an elite club. Dinesh Karthik is not having the best of the time in the ongoing Dream11 IPL as he has not been able to score big runs for the side. In the 12 matches so far, the wicketkeeper-batsman has only scored 148 runs. In the previous match versus Punjab, Karthik was dismissed by Mohammad Shami for a duck.

  • He will be flying back,’ CEO says CSK player will play no further part in Indian Premier League 2020

Things haven’t gone to plan for Chennai Super Kings this season. They were big favourites ahead of Indian Premier League season 13. They were in the limelight as fans were excited to witness MS Dhoni back in action after more than a year. He also had announced his retirement from international cricket ahead of the tournament. However, things started on the wrong foot for the three-time champions. Several players and staff members were found to be Covid-19 positive during testing. Then star batsman Suresh Raina and experienced spinner Harbhajan Singh left UAE for India due to personal reasons. They won the first match against Mumbai Indians but things have been bumpy since then. CSK now sit in the last position in the IPL 2020 points table with only 3 wins from 10 matches. He is arguably one of the greatest cricketing brains to ever play the game. He can see things and assess situations which other players can’t and you can see, as the tournament progress, his forms getting better as well,” he added.

  • Far from madding crowd, MS Dhoni trains alone at NCA

BENGALURU : The best in the business prepare quietly  for tougher battles and Mahendra Singh Dhoni is no exception as he went through a rigorous net session at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), far from public gaze, ahead of England tour.

Legends at the business end of their careers prepare and follow a customised blue-print to increase their longevity.

Sachin Tendulkar during his last few years in international cricket would train all by himself at the Bandra Kurla Complex in Mumbai and Dhoni’s training session at NCA on Monday looked similar.

He faced hundreds of deliveries with 70 percent being throw-downs.

Dhoni, who took the YoYo test on June 15 with other limited overs specialists, had stayed back and perhaps waited for the hullabaloo around the team to die down before taking the field.

On what would have been the fifth day of the Afghanistan Test match (had it not finished in two days), Dhoni walked inside the National Cricket Academy nets team’s throw-down expert Raghu and speedster Shardul Thakur in tow.

The next two and half hours was an intense session with Dhoni facing Raghu’s customary throw-downs from 18 yards and Thakur’s deliveries in between.

It was two hours at a stretch and after a short break, he again resumed batting and this time Siddarth Kaul also joined the session.

There wasn’t too many people around to watch and experience a Dhoni net session.

Raghu started with usual length deliveries as he warmed up with usual knocking.

Slowly the pace increased and the veteran was peppered with short balls which reared from back of the length. He gingerly defended a few, confidently brought a few down and even swayed out of the line in case of a few.

However, the moment there was some width, Dhoni would slash it over point.

He would call up Shardul and ask him about his imaginary field placings. Shardul would be seen pointing at imaginary field positions like mid-wicket, extra cover and deep fine leg. Dhoni would play shots accordingly.

  • Dwayne Bravo is mentor to all young Chennai Super Kings bowlers,

“Bravo is massively important from two perspectives. He is an incredibly experienced cricketer. His ability to control in those middle overs, when we need some control (and) bowl to his field is wonderful to watch,” the former bowling coach of Indian team said ahead of CSK’s match against Mumbai Indians.

“The number of balls he bowls that go down the ground for one or to the square for one, he exactly knows what’s going to happen… is hugely important. And then the third component is the amount of mentorship he does for our bowlers. He does lot of talking, lot of advising,” Simons said.

However, there is room for improvement as far as CSK bowlers are concerned.

“There are certain lengths we would like to improve on, lines we would like to improve on and work on them all the time but we also very aware of the fact that this is a long tournament and we are not even near the halfway mark yet. And I feel, we are improving but we would like to give our batsmen less to chase,” he signed off.

Simons also waxed eloquent about Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s marvellous effort against Royal Challengers Bangalore the other night.

“MS might look unorthodox but he is very effective, that’s the way he plays. He reads the game. He senses where the game changes. Against the RCB the other night, it was all about reading the game, understanding who were their key bowlers and who is going to target at the back end and that’s what MS is about,” the bowling coach said.

  • It Won’t be Easy to Score Big Runs in Knockouts

Chennai Super Kings registered a narrow four-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Hyderabad, as the former move to top of the points table in IPL. Chennai managed to defend their lowest total this season (182), courtesy some tight bowling by pacer Deepak Chahar who returned with figures of 3/15 in his four overs.

Bowling, till now in the current edition of the tournament has been difficult. But Chennai skipper MS Dhoni feels that as the tournament progresses, big runs will be hard to come by.

“Wickets have gone better. If you compare it to the first few editions of the IPL, these wickets are very good batting surfaces. You also need to give credit to the batsmen as they’re getting stronger. They’re making plans as to which bowler bowls what. As we get into the knockout stages, we’ll see the bowlers coming up with new plans and it won’t be easy for the batsmen to score the kind of runs they’re scoring so far,” he said in the post-match interaction.

In the match, SRH had staged a dramatic comeback. After being 71/4 at one stage, they managed to take the game till the last ball, where six runs were needed.

“I won’t say what we were talking about (discussion with Bravo before the last ball). I wanted him to change his plan. At times even the best – Bravo – need a bit of advice. That’s what they’re paid for,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni went on to praise Deepak Chahar and other bowlers, who held their nerve in the tense situation. “What’s important is to give them – the younger bowlers – as many games as possible. Deepak swings the ball and lends balance with his batting down the order. Shardul (Thakur) had a few bad games. Last international series wasn’t good for him. But he has the right attitude and also the variations.”
