The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has extended its inquiry into the alleged mass burial at Dharmasthala, bringing ‘Maskman’ Chinnaiah to Bengaluru. The team is inspecting three locations Chinnaiah visited earlier this year, believed to be connected to his planning. A rented house in Mallasandra, registered under the name of T Jayanth, is one of the key locations. Jayanth is reportedly associated with Mahesh Shetty Timmarodi, a self-proclaimed social activist from Dakshina Kannada. Chinnaiah stated he stayed at the house in April, prompting an SIT investigation. Jayanth’s wife, son, and daughter currently reside there. It was at this house that Chinnaiah first brought the skull, which was later handed over to the SIT. Chinnaiah and Jayanth subsequently traveled to Delhi, allegedly to bring the matter to the Supreme Court.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is demanding that the investigation into the alleged mass burial incident at Shri Kshetra Dharmasthala be transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Currently, the case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The BJP has announced a large-scale ‘Dharmasthala Chalo’ rally scheduled for September 1. This event is intended to mobilize public support and pressure for an NIA probe. Speaking at a press conference, BJP Karnataka president and MLA BY Vijayendra stated that an NIA investigation would boost public confidence and ensure transparency. He urged the Hindu community across the state to participate in the rally to protest actions allegedly hurting Hindu sentiments and to push for an NIA investigation. Devotees are requested to visit local temples on September 1 to offer prayers and participate in processions before heading to Dharmasthala. A massive gathering is planned at Dharmasthala at 2:00 PM to raise awareness and issue a warning to the state government. The BJP state president asserted that the government’s handling of the Dharmasthala issue has damaged its reputation and that a thorough NIA investigation is crucial to expose the organizations and malicious forces behind the controversy. He cautioned that these forces could potentially target other Hindu temples. Vijayendra questioned the Chief Minister’s swift actions regarding the Dharmasthala issue, suggesting that the government should have gathered more information about the accuser and the organizations supporting them. He proposed that the state intelligence or police should have conducted a preliminary investigation before any decisions were made. Drawing a parallel with the Chinnaswamy Stadium stampede incident, Vijayendra accused the Chief Minister of making hasty decisions in the Dharmasthala matter. The complainant, who was arrested by the SIT and sent to custody, was found to have provided false information regarding the bones. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara confirmed the arrest and stated that the police are investigating the network behind the case.

The Karnataka government has decided to hand over the investigation into the Dharmasthala burial allegations to a Special Investigation Team (SIT). The Dakshina Kannada SP, Dr. Arun K, confirmed that the matter would soon be transferred to the SIT. According to a government order issued on July 19, the SIT will be led by DGP Pranab Mohanty from the Internal Security Department. The team will also include IPS officers M. N. Anuchet, Soumya Latha, and Jitendra Kumar Dayama.

Home Department Under Secretary S. Ambika stated that the government has decided to form the SIT to conduct a detailed investigation of case number 39/2025, registered at the Dharmasthala police station under section 211 (A), BNS.

The Karnataka State Women’s Commission, in a letter dated July 14, brought attention to a person who claimed in court to have buried hundreds of bodies in the Dharmasthala area. The Commission is taking seriously the statement made by the family of a medical student and reports of human skulls being found in the area.

The person’s statements involve serious crimes such as murder, rape, the disappearance of women and girl students, and unnatural deaths. Due to these allegations, the Commission recommended the formation of an SIT to ensure a fair and comprehensive investigation under the leadership of senior officials.

The government has determined that forming an SIT is appropriate to thoroughly investigate the issues raised by the Women’s Commission and the case registered at the Dharmasthala police station. Related criminal cases, whether already registered or likely to be registered in other police stations across the state, will also be transferred to the SIT.

The SIT will utilize the resources available at the Dakshina Kannada District Police Office. It will provide real-time updates on the investigation’s progress to the DG and IGP. Upon completion of the investigation, the team will submit a detailed report to the government, via the DG and IGP.
