  • Uddhav had asked me to reinstate Waze when I was CM, says BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis

    By PTI
MUMBAI: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Wednesday claimed that when he was Maharashtra chief minister, Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray had called him in 2018 to seek reinstatement of the then suspended police officer Sachin Waze into the state police force.

He also accused the Shiv Sena of pressuring him over this demand at that time.

Mumbai police officer Waze is at the focus of a probe by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) into the case related to the recovery of an SUV with explosives near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house in south Mumbai on February 25.

Waze, arrested in the case on March 13 for his alleged role in the crime, was attached to the Crime Intelligence Unit (CIU) of city police’s crime branch till recently.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Fadnavis said, “I was Maharashtra chief minister in 2018 and also helmed the home department. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had called me to reinstate the then suspended police officer Sachin Waze back into the police force. Some Shiv Sena ministers later met me with the same request.”

“When I received the proposal to reinstate Waze back into police force, I verbally sought advocate general’s opinion about it. I was told that Waze was suspended after the Bombay High Court’s order. Therefore, I decided not to reinstate him,” Fadnavis said.

The Leader of Opposition in the state Legislative Assembly also alleged that the Shiv Sena even tried to pressurise him over it.

The BJP and the Shiv Sena shared power between 2014 and 2019.

However, after the 2019 Assembly polls, the Sena parted ways with the BJP over sharing the chief minister’s post and joined hands with the NCP and the Congress.

Uddhav Thackeray heads the three-party Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government in the state.

Credited with eliminating 63 alleged criminals in ‘encounters’, Waze, a 1990-batch officer of the state cadre, was suspended in 2004 over his role in the custodial death of a 2002 Ghatkopar blast suspect Khwaja Yunus and was reinstated last year.

  • Assam polls: Congress-AIUDF alliance a ‘Mahakhot’, says Fadnavis

    By PTI
GUWHATI/NALBARI: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday slammed the alliance of Congress and Badruddin Ajmal’s AIUDF in Assam calling it “Mahakhot” (great flaw), which he claimed will destroy the social and cultural fabric of the state.

The alliance between the two parties was created to fulfill political ambitions, he said at an election rally at Nalbari.

BJP and its allies are committed to ensuring security and prosperity to the people of the north eastern state and protect their culture, he said.

“The Congress-AIDUF alliance is is not a ‘Mahajoth’ (grand alliance) but a ‘Mahakhot’ (great flaw) who have aligned to fulfill their political ambitions with the sole purpose to defeat BJP. But the people of Assam will reject them,” the former Maharashtra chief minister said.

BJP has repeatedly denounced the alliance in Assam and union minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday said it was forged to grab power in Assam and divide people along religious lines.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan had said on Monday that instead of following Mahatma Gandhi, the Congress was following in “Jinnah’s footsteps” and asserted that it will “destroy” the country while referring to the opposition party’s alliance with ISF in West Bengal and IUML in Kerala, besides AIUDF in Assam.

Fadnavis disagreed with NCP president Sharad Pawar’s view that BJP will win in Assam but lose in the other states going to the polls, which begin later this month.

“I do not agree with Pawarji. BJP will definitely win in Assam and in the other states too”, he added.

Assembly polls are slated to be held in West Bengal, Kerala, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu, besides Assam.

Later to questions about BJP’s promise made before the last state poll to send back all infiltrators from the state, Fadnavis told reporters “First we have to stop them from entering and then we can think of taking any other action”.

The BJP-led government at the Centre has taken up the sealing of the border with Bangladesh in “a big way” and though some work is still left, it will be completed soon, he said.

He asserted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has secured and strengthened the international borders with all the neighbouring countries.

“Be it Bangladesh, Pakistan or China border, Modiji has ensured that it has been strengthened effectively so that infiltrators are not likely to easily attempt entering our country”, Fadnavis said.

About China he said, “Every time they had made incursions, they occupied some area.

But the last time they tried to enter, they were forced to go back and we did not lose any land”, he said.

The BJP government in Assam under Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, he said, was able to bring about “good parivartan” and the transformation is socio-economic and not just political.

During the last five years the BJP has shown the “politics of performance ” in Assam.

“Our dream for Assam is to realise its potential, develop its resources and change the lives of the ordinary citizens,” the BJP leader said.

“After BJP formed the government in Assam, the doors of North East opened for the NDA and BJP emergED as the most desired in the region”, he said.

BJP has always believed in changing the society for better and to empower the weakest to ensure that democratic values percolate to the last person, he added.

  • Sharjeel Usmani getting soft treatment from Uddhav government, says Fadnavis

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Senior Maharashtra BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday said activist Sharjeel Usmani, accused of delivering a hate speech at a conclave in Pune in January, was charged with minor sections of the law so that he could easily get bail and return to his home in Uttar Pradesh.

In a tweet, the former Maharashtra chief minister said, “Usmani had hurt sentiments of Hindus but he was charged with section 153 A (for promoting enmity between different groups). The section of IPC 295A (used for outraging religious sentiments) was systematically removed while filing an FIR against him in Pune. The state helped Sharjeel to get bail.”

Hitting out at Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray’s “hypocrisy”, the leader of opposition in the Assembly said “the CM had said his government will find Sharjeel Usmani from any corner of the world, but in reality, MVA’s (government) actions are opposite to their words”.

The alleged hate speech was made at a gathering held on January 30, 2021 in Pune to commemorate the anniversary of the Battle of Koregaon Bhima.

  • Mansukh Hiran’s death was carefully planned murder: Devendra Fadnavis

    By PTI
MUMBAI: Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly Devendra Fadnavis claimed on Wednesday that Thane-based auto parts dealer Mansukh Hiran’s death was a “carefully planned murder”.

Speaking to reporters outside the legislative complex, Fadnavis also alleged that the Shiv Sena-led state government does not want a free and fair probe in the case for fear that some “higher-ups” in the government will be exposed.

“The death of Mansukh Hiran was a carefully planned murder.

Only someone well-versed in the nuances of police investigation could have done it,” the BJP leader said.

Hiran, who was in possession of the SUV which was found with explosives outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house in south Mumbai on February 25, was found dead in a creek in Thane on March 5.

Fadnavis also claimed that the government could seek the resignation of forest minister and Sena leader Sanjay Rathod in the Puja Chavan suicide case because Rathod could not have posed any threat to the government “unlike API Vaze who knows many secrets”.

Earlier in the day, home minister Anil Deshmukh announced in the Legislative Council that assistant police inspector Sachin Vaze, against whom Hiran’s wife has leveled allegations, has been transferred from Crime Intelligence Unit.

Fadnavis claimed that the government transferred the police officer only to save its skin.

“But we will continue to fight for action against him based on the prima facie evidence against him and till Hiran gets justice,” the BJP leader said.

The former chief minister also claimed that Vaze, who had been suspended in the Khwaja Yunus encounter case, was reinstated by overruling the court directions “so that he could be of help during the pandemic”.

“How he could be of help was seen in the present case,” Fadnavis quipped.

He also alleged that the police officer, who had joined the Shiv Sena in 2008, continues to be its member.

  • Cop Sachin Vaze’s name came in statement of Mansukh Hiren’s wife: Anil Deshmukh

    By ANI
MUMBAI: Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday said that the government has decided to remove Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Vaze from the Crime Branch because his name came up in the statement of Mansukh Hiren’s wife.

“The government has decided to remove Assistant Police Inspector Sachin Vaze from the Crime Branch. His name came up in the statement of Mansukh Hiren’s wife,” said Deshmukh.

Earlier in the Legislative Assembly today, Anil Deshmukh had said that Sachin Vaze will be removed from the Crime Branch and posted in some other department to ensure impartial investigation in Mansukh Hiren’s death case.

BJP members shout slogans and created a ruckus after the home minister announced the transfer of Sachin Vaze from the Crime Branch, demanded his suspension and arrest.

Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis also moved a motion of breach of privilege against Anil Deshmukh

A car carrying unassembled explosive materials was found abandoned at Carmichael Road in South Mumbai on February 25, near the house of Reliance Industries Chairman Mukesh Ambani.

The owner of the vehicle, Mansukh Hiren, was found dead in a creek in the Thane district on Friday. Now, ATS Maharashtra is investigating the case.

  • Bomb threat to Ambanis: Fadnavis demands Mumbai cop’s arrest as SUV owner’s wife claims foul play

    By Express News Service
MUMBAI: Maharashtra Assembly on Tuesday saw noisy scenes as leader of opposition Devendra Fadnavis demanded the arrest of a police officer in the Mansukh Hiran death case, and Home Minister Anil Deshmukh blamed the former chief minister for “covering up” the Anvay Naik suicide case.

Fadnavis demanded action against API Sachin Vaze in connection with the death of Hiran who was in possession of the SUV with explosives found outside industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house in south Mumbai.

The Naik suicide case, in which journalist Arnab Goswami had been arrested, was raked up, with the home minister saying the government will probe the “cover-up” of the case by then chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The House was adjourned seven times with MLAs ignoring COVID-19 norms of physical distancing and use of masks.

A Scorpio, with 20 gelatin sticks inside, was found near Antilia, Ambani’s high-rise residence in south Mumbai, on February 25.

Police said the vehicle was stolen from Hiran’s possession on February 18.

The mystery deepened after Hiran’s body was found in a creek last Friday in neighbouring Thane.

Citing the statement by Hiran’s wife, Fadnavis claimed that Vaze was in possession of the car for four months.

“The Innova car which was behind the Scorpio is in Mumbai as per my information.

Give me some time, I will trace it,” he added.

Fadnavis claimed that Hiran’s wife had alleged in her statement to police that her husband may have been killed by assistant police inspector Sachin Vaze.

“She told police that her husband knew Vaze and the Scorpio was with the police officer from November 2020 to February 5, 2021,” Fadnavis said.

“She had also said her husband was with Vaze on February 27, 28 and March 2.

The complaint letter (of Hiran) addressed to the chief minister, deputy chief minister and police commissioners of Mumbai and Thane was written on the instructions of Vaze,” Fadnavis alleged.

The BJP leader claimed that Hiran’s last location was found with Dhananjay Vithal Gawde, against whom an FIR was lodged in an extortion case.

The other person mentioned in the same FIR was Sachin Vaze, Fadnavis added.

As Fadnavis raised the Hiran case, minister and Shiv Sena leader Anil Parab sought the arrest of those named in Delkar’s suicide note.

Delkar (58), a seven-term MP from the Dadra and Nagar Haveli, was found dead at a hotel on Marine Drive in south Mumbai on February 22.

The home minister announced formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe Delkar’s death.

Deshmukh said Delkar had mentioned in the suicide note that he was under pressure from the Union Territory’s administrator Praful Kheda Patel who had been a minister in the Narendra Modi-led cabinet in Gujarat.

Fadnavis said Vaze was being protected as he belonged to the ruling party.

Vaze had joined the Shiv Sena in 2008 while under suspension.

Vaze was suspended in the Khwaja Yunus custodial death case and but was reinstated in his job last year during the COVID-19 lockdown, Fadnavis said.

“When I was the chief minister, the issue of reinstating Vaze had come up but the advocate general had advised against it,” Fadnavis said.

While announcing the SIT probe in the Delkar case, home minister Deshmukh said the MP had said in the suicide note that he was ending his life in Mumbai as he had faith in Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Maharashtra government.

“Earlier, IAS officer Rajesh Kumar Shrivastav from Madhya Pradesh had ended his life in Nagpur in Maharashtra, the minister said.

“This officer felt he will not get justice in Raipur, in a BJP-ruled state,” Deshmukh said.

BJP members were quick to point out that the officer was from Chhattisgarh and not Madhya Pradesh.

“The home minister feels happy that people come to Maharashtra to commit suicide. He doesn’t even know Raipur is in Chhattisgarh and not in Madhya Pradesh,” Fadnavis said.

Deshmukh said he had already corrected himself.

Fadnavis wondered if the home minister wanted Maharashtra to be known as a place where people come to die.

“Is this a matter of pride,” the BJP leader asked.

Jumping into the debate on the Mansukh Hiran death case, Nana Patole of the Congress asked how did Fadnavis get hold of the call data record (CDR), and how an unidentified vehicle could reach so close to Ambani’s house.

Patole also asked on what basis Fadnavis said the vehicle found outside Ambani’s house did not have explosives.

Bhaskar Jadhav (Shiv Sena) said the BJP was targeting Vaze as he had arrested Goswami in the Naik suicide case.

Deshmukh said Fadnavis’s own role in the “cover-up” of that case will be probed.

Fadnavis said the government was resorting to threats to save Vaze, and dared it to order a probe against him.

As noisy scenes continued despite several adjournments, the House was adjourned for the day.

Meanwhile, Vimla Hiran, wife of Mansukh Hiran, has alleged in her statement to the ATS that Vaze might have killed her husband.

The police officer did not offer comment immediately on the allegations.

After a Scorpio with explosives was found near industrialist Mukesh Ambani’s house in south Mumbai on February 25, Hiran, a Thane resident, had claimed it had been stolen from his possession a week earlier.

Hiran himself was found dead in Thane creek on March 5.

Vimla Hiran recorded her statement before the state Anti-Terrorism Squad, which is probing the case, on March 7.

According to the statement, the Scorpio, owned by Dr Peter Newton, was in the possession of the Hiran family for the past three years with Dr Newton’s consent.

Her husband knew API Vaze who was a regular client of Mansukh’s car decor business, she said.

In November 2020, he had given the Scorpio to Vaze to use, Vimla Hiran said, adding that the police officer returned it on February 5, 2021, through a driver.

Her husband had then told her that the steering of the SUV was hard, she said.

On February 17 Mansukh left for Mumbai in the SUV for business-related trip, but as the steering got jammed, he left it after crossing the Mulund toll plaza and took a cab, she said.

The next day when he returned to the spot with one of his employees, it was missing, so he lodged a complaint of car theft at Vikhroli Police Station, she said.

On February 25, when the SUV with gelatin sticks was found near Ambani’s house, her husband got a call from an ATS inspector, she said.

Mansukh and their son Lucky then went to meet the officer near their building, she told the police.

The officer showed him a picture of the SUV and Hiran identified it.

He later told her that he went with Sachin Vaze to the Mumbai police’s crime branch the next morning for inquiry and returned around 10.30 pm with Vaze.

He showed her a copy of his recorded statement which also bore the name and signature of Vaze, Vimla told the ATS.

On March 2, Mansukh told her that he had gone to Mumbai with Vaze, and on his insistence filed a complaint addressed to the Chief Minister, Home Minister and police commissioners of Mumbai and Thane about harassment faced from the media and police, her statement said.

She asked him if he had been tortured and Mansukh denied, but said he was constantly getting calls.

On March 3 he told her that Vaze had asked him to get arrested in the case and assured that he (Vaze) will get him out on bail within 2-3 days, the statement claimed.

She advised him against doing any such thing and he seemed tensed, she told the ATS.

On March 4, her husband called his brother Vinod Hiran and said he needed a lawyer to apply for anticipatory bail as he feared arrest, Vimla said in the statement.

He returned home early the same day, and said he had to go out again as a police officer named Tawde wanted to meet him, she said.

He was going to Ghodbunder Road to consult the police who were their well-wishers, he assured her.

Mansukh left in an auto rickshaw and after 11 pm his phone became unreachable, so she called Vinod Hiran.

Vinod called Vaze who advised him to wait till morning, she said.

Next day Vinod filed a missing person complaint and around 3.30 pm her son informed her that Mansukh’s body has been found in the creek, she told the ATS.

Her husband was a good swimmer so he could not have drowned in the creek, she stated.

She suspected that her husband might have been killed by Sachin Vaze, Vimla Hiran said in the statement, demanding a thorough probe.

Speaking to reporters in Mumbai on Tuesday, API Vaze said he would go through her allegations and only then respond.

  • Celeb tweets probe: Uddhav government says 12 names have come to fore

    By PTI
MUMBAI: A dozen names have come to the fore during a probe into the alleged role of the BJP IT cell in tweets posted by Indian celebrities in response to comments by some global figures on the farmer protest, Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said in the Assembly on Tuesday.

Deshmukh maintained the probe was not directed at the tweets by Indian celebrities as he engaged in a war of words with Leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis of the BJP on the issue in the Assembly.

Fadnavis suggested the Shiv Sena-led MVA government was trying to probe icons like Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar over their pro-India tweets issued after some foreign figures posted on-line comments supporting the ongoing protest outside Delhi against the Centre’s new farm laws.

Deshmukh promptly refuted the charge, saying the state government had ordered a probe into tweets by the BJP’s IT cell and not by cricketer Tendulkar and legendary singer Mangeshkar.

“I did not make any statement about (probing) honourable Tendulkar or Mangeshkar. I did not speak about probing Tendulkar or Mangeshkar. I had talked about probing the IT cell of a political party, which I am not naming.”

“It was probed. Names of 12 persons have come to the fore in this connection and further action is being taken against them,” said Deshmukh.

The NCP minister later said in the House that the IT cell concerned is of the BJP.

On February 8, Deshmukh said the state intelligence department will conduct a probe into allegations that some celebrities were pressurised into issuing tweets in connection with the ongoing farmers’ protest.

Deshmukh had made the remarks on an online platform after Congress, a ruling coalition partner in Maharashtra, sought an investigation into the BJP’s alleged connection with the tweets of some celebrities and whether the saffron party “arm-twisted” them.

A number of prominent personalities, including Tendulkar and Mangeshkar, had rallied around the central government on social media using hashtags #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda.

This came after tweets by American pop star Rihanna and teenage climate activist Greta Thunberg backing farmers who are protesting against the three agri-marketing laws enacted by the Centre in September last year.

Fadnavis said in the Assembly on Tuesday that Tendulkar and Mangeshkar had tweeted that “India is against propaganda” and “India stands united”.

“Is it wrong to say in this country that ‘India stands united’? Someone gets up, complains to the home minister,” the former chief minister said and asked Deshmukh to think well before entertaining such complaints.

Countering Deshmukh, Fadnavis said he will feel proud if he asks anyone to tweet for the country.

“Let’s assume for a minute that I asked them to do so (issue tweets). What offence did I commit? What offence have I committed if I asked celebrities to side with the country if there is propaganda going on against it?” the senior BJP legislator sought to know.

  • Farmers’ stir: Fadnavis raises issue of celebs tweets in Maharashtra Assembly, Deshmukh counters

    By PTI
MUMBAI: BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday trained guns at the Maharashtra government, suggesting it was trying to probe icons like Sachin Tendulkar and Lata Mangeshkar over their pro-India tweets issued after some foreign celebrities talked about farmers’ protest near Delhi.

This came after tweets by American pop star Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg backing farmers who are protesting near Delhi’s border points against three farm laws enacted by the Centre in September last year.

Fadnavis said in the Maharashtra Assembly on Tuesday that Tendulkar and Mangeshkar had tweeted that “India is against propaganda” and “India stands united”.

“Is it wrong to say in this country that ‘India stands united’? Someone gets up, complains to the home minister,” the leader of opposition in the Assembly said and asked Deshmukh to think well before entertaining such complaints.

    Deshmukh, however, dismissed Fadnavis’s charges.

“I did not speak about probing Tendulkar or Mangeshkar. I had talked about probing the IT cell of a political party, which I am not naming,” the minister said.

“It was probed. Names of 12 persons have come to the fore in this connection and further action is being taken against them,” he added.

  • Non-cognisable case against Devendra Fadnavis for ‘defaming’ deceased woman

    By PTI
NAGPUR: A non-cognisable case was registered on Monday against former Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and five other leaders of the BJP in Washim district after a complaint was lodged against them for allegedly defaming the woman from Pune district whose death set off a political row leading to resignation of a minister.

The offence was registered under sections 500 (Punishment for defamation) and 501 (Printing or engraving matter known to be defamatory) of the Indian Penal Code at Manora police station.

Besides Fadnavis, who is the Leader of Opposition in the state Legislative Assembly, the complaint also named Leader of Opposition in Legislative Council Pravin Darekar, former ministers Sudhir Mungantiwar and Ashish Shelar, Mumbai MLA Atul Bhatkhalkar, and BJP leader Chitra Wagh.

The complaint also named Prasad Lad, Shantabai Chavan, and woman activist Trupti Desai.

The 23-year-old woman died in Hadapsar area of Pune in February.

Her death triggered a huge political controversy with the BJP alleging link of Shiv Sena MLA Sanjay Rathod to the case.

Rathod, a Banjara community leader, resigned as state Forest minister on Sunday but had denied all allegations raised against him.

The complaint against Fadnavis and others was lodged by Shyam Sardar Rathod, who heads youth wing of the Rashtriya Banjara Parishad in Washim district, as per the copy of the complaint.

Shyam Sardar Rathod also accused some news channels of defaming the deceased woman and the Banjara community.

He also threatened to launch a protest if a strict action is not taken against the accused persons.

  • Is Maharashtra govt mentally stable? Ex-CM Devendra Fadnavis on probe into celebs’ tweets on agri laws

    By PTI
MUMBAI: The BJP on Monday slammed the Shiv Sena-led Maharashtra government after Home Minister Anil Deshmukh said the state intelligence department will probe allegations that some celebrities were pressurised recently to issue tweets in connection with the ongoing farmers’ protest.

In a stinging attack, senior BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis termed the move as “disgusting and highly deplorable” and said the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) should feel ashamed while using the word “probe” for Bharat Ratna awardees.

He also said that it seems necessary to probe the “mental state” of those who demanded the investigation and those who ordered it.

“Has this MVA Govt lost all its senses? MVA should feel ashamed while using the word ‘probe’ for BharatRatnas! Actually, now it seems necessary to probe the mental state & stability of the ones who made such demand & of people who ordered probe against our BharatRatnas!” Fadnavis tweeted.

Many celebrities including cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar and legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar rallied around the central government on social media using hashtags #IndiaTogether and #IndiaAgainstPropaganda following tweets by Rihanna and climate activist Greta Thunberg backing farmers who are protesting near Delhi border.

ALSO READ | Maharashtra govt to probe if celebs were forced to tweet on farmers’ stir by BJP: Congress’ Sachin Sawant

Tendulkar and Mangeshkar are recipients of Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award in India.

In an apparent swipe at the Shiv Sena which heads the MVA government, Fadnavis, a former chief minister, asked, “Where is your Marathi Pride now? Where is your Maharashtra Dharma? We will never find such ‘ratnas’ (gems) in entire Nation who order probe against BharatRatnas who always stand strong in one voice for our Nation!” Earlier in the day, home minister Deshmukh said the intelligence department in Maharashtra will probe whether some celebrities were allegedly pressurised recently to issue tweets in connection with the farmers’ protest after American pop star Rihanna and others talked about the stir on social media.

Deshmukh, a senior NCP leader, made these remarks after the Congress sought investigation into the BJP’s alleged connection to the tweets posted by celebrities and whether they were “arm-twisted” to issue such tweets.

The Sharad Pawar-led Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is one of the ruling constituents with the Congress in the Sena-led government.

Hitting back at Fadnavis, Maharashtra Congress spokesperson Sachin Sawant accused the BJP of deliberately trying to twist the issue.

He said the Congress demaned the “probe of the BJP (connection to the tweets)”, and not of celebrities.

“Why BJP is keeping mum on why tweets of Akshay Kumar and Saina Nehwal are matching with each other? Why Suniel Shetty tags his tweet to a BJP office bearer? Why BJP is scared of probe?” Sawant tweeted.

Sawant further questioned why the drafts of most of the tweets are identical and have the same word “amicable” mentioned in them.

He also claimed that there is a “great possibility” that some celebrities were “arm-twisted” by the BJP into issuing the tweets rallying around the Central government.

“Those need to be given protection. Those who have opined on their own their opinion must be respected,” he added.

He alleged that the BJP was capable of pressurising celebrities.

“It is the duty of MVA govt to provide atmosphere where every individual can exercise their right of freedom of speech without any pressure. Even if pressure is from Modi govt,” Sawant added.
