The Indian cricket team faces a blow as star batter Rinku Singh steps away following the heartbreaking death of his father from liver cancer. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia led the tributes, voicing profound sorrow for the family.

In an IANS interaction, Saikia detailed Rinku’s hasty 5 AM flight from Chennai to Greater Noida hospital. ‘We extend BCCI’s heartfelt condolences to Rinku and his loved ones in this hour of immense pain,’ he remarked.

Rinku will skip the crucial Super-8 encounter with West Indies in Kolkata on Sunday, prioritizing family. Updates on his return will follow soon, assured Saikia.

Khanchand Singh’s battle ended tragically at 4:36 AM Friday after weeks on ventilator at Yatharth Hospital, admitted February 21 amid worsening health.

Rinku, part of India’s 2026 T20 World Cup plans, had briefly left the Zimbabwe match camp in Chennai to see his father before rejoining, sitting out the playing XI.

From a background of cylinder delivery work and economic struggles, Khanchand instilled unyielding grit in Rinku, propelling him to stardom. The outpouring of grief includes messages from Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, and Chennai Super Kings officials.

Rinku’s early morning departure for the funeral rites marks a poignant pause in his career. The cricketing world watches closely, hoping for his swift recovery from this personal tragedy. Stories like Rinku’s highlight the human side of sport, where family roots run deep.

Speculation surrounding a potential Test comeback for Virat Kohli has been officially quashed by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The rumors intensified following India’s recent Test series defeats and Kohli’s exceptional century in Ranchi, which many interpreted as a statement of his enduring prowess. Kohli’s dazzling 135 off 120 balls in the Ranchi ODI showcased his continued hunger and fitness, silencing any doubts about his ability to perform at the highest level. This remarkable innings occurred amidst discussions about whether India had prematurely moved on from experienced stalwarts like Kohli and Rohit Sharma, especially after consecutive series losses. The timing was particularly ironic, with India suffering back-to-back multi-Test series defeats for the first time since 1984-85. Reports suggesting the BCCI had approached Kohli and Sharma about reconsidering their Test retirements gained traction after both players displayed strong form, including a century partnership, in the Ranchi ODI. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia has firmly stated that these reports are baseless, emphasizing that no discussions regarding Kohli’s Test return have taken place. Despite the official denial, fan sentiment remains strong, with many hoping for the return of such experienced leadership in the Test arena. Even former England captain Kevin Pietersen weighed in, suggesting that if Kohli and Sharma were considering a Test return, it should be taken seriously for the benefit of the format.

India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav couldn’t resist a playful dig at the recent Asia Cup trophy controversy, immediately after leading India to a series triumph against Australia. The hard-fought five-match T20I series concluded with India securing a 2-1 victory, despite the final match being abandoned due to rain on November 8th in Brisbane. This significant win continues India’s impressive 13-year streak of unbeaten T20I series on Australian soil.

During the post-match formalities, Suryakumar was asked about the satisfaction of lifting a trophy. His response was a clever nod to the Asia Cup incident, where the Indian team, despite winning the tournament, did not physically receive the coveted trophy. “It feels great to finally get to touch the trophy. Felt it in my hands when I was handed over the trophy for the series victory. A few days back another trophy arrived in India, our women’s team has won the World Cup. That trophy has also arrived back home. It feels great and getting to touching this trophy as well feels good,” Suryakumar shared at the press conference.

The captain’s remarks are widely interpreted as a lighthearted jab at Pakistan Cricket Board chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who notably did not present the Asia Cup trophy following India’s championship win. Consequently, the trophy has remained at the Asian Cricket Council headquarters in Dubai. This situation has fueled discussions and speculation within the cricketing world.

In related developments, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia has confirmed that negotiations between the BCCI and PCB regarding the Asia Cup issue have seen positive progress following a recent face-to-face meeting in Dubai. This marks the first direct communication since the dispute originally arose. Saikia clarified that while the Asia Cup dispute wasn’t an official agenda item at the ICC meeting, the organization facilitated an informal discussion between the parties. “It was really good to start the process of negotiation. Both sides cordially participated in the meeting, which took place on the sidelines of the ICC board meeting. Definitely, in the coming times, if things go in a positive way, the issue will be sorted at the earliest,” Saikia informed PTI. The Asia Cup trophy’s current location remains at the ACC office in Dubai, reportedly due to instructions from Mohsin Naqvi to prevent its relocation without his explicit approval. This comes after his earlier insistence that the Indian players should receive the trophy directly from him, a condition that Suryakumar and the Indian team ultimately declined.

The lingering issue surrounding India’s Asia Cup 2025 trophy has finally found a resolution. After more than a month since their victory, the Indian cricket team will soon receive their coveted trophy. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia confirmed that a cordial agreement has been reached with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi to amicably settle the matter. The breakthrough occurred during informal and formal meetings of the International Cricket Council (ICC). Saikia and Naqvi, along with senior ICC officials, engaged in discussions on the sidelines of the ICC board meeting. Both parties expressed a positive and cooperative approach, aiming for an early and amicable solution. Options for resolving the trophy handover will now be explored, ensuring a satisfactory outcome for all involved. The involvement of a senior ICC official has facilitated these crucial talks, with hopes that the issue will be resolved without the need for further intervention.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially addressed the alarming molestation incident involving two Australian women cricketers in Indore. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia described the event as ‘deeply regrettable and isolated,’ emphasizing India’s reputation for hospitality. The two unnamed cricketers were reportedly approached by a motorcyclist while walking to a nearby cafe from their hotel. This unfortunate incident has drawn widespread condemnation, and the BCCI stated its zero-tolerance policy towards such acts. Saikia commended the Madhya Pradesh Police for their swift apprehension of the accused, Aqeel Khan, and assured that justice would be served through due legal process. The board also plans to review and enhance existing safety protocols for visiting athletes. The Australian team, currently in Indore for a World Cup match, is reportedly under increased security following the incident, which has unfortunately cast a shadow over the ongoing Women’s ODI World Cup.

Following India’s victory over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 final, a significant controversy has emerged. Mohsin Naqvi, the Chief of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), took the Asia Cup trophy and the Indian team’s medals to his hotel. This action has drawn strong criticism from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). The incident came to light when BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia issued a statement expressing disapproval of Naqvi’s actions, emphasizing that even if the Indian team did not want to receive the trophy from him, it did not authorize him to take it away. Saikia stated that Naqvi’s behavior went against the spirit of the game.

During the presentation ceremony, Naqvi was present on stage. However, the BCCI decided not to accept the trophy from him, and instead, was prepared to receive it from the Vice-Chairman of the Emirates Cricket Board. Naqvi, seemingly upset by this decision, took the trophy and the Indian team’s medals to his hotel, reportedly stating that the Indian team did not need to be given the trophy.

BCCI is now considering taking action regarding Naqvi’s conduct. Secretary Devajit Saikia strongly condemned Naqvi’s actions, explaining that India was at war with the country from which the ACC chairman hails. Therefore, the BCCI could not accept the trophy from a representative of that nation. Saikia expressed surprise at Naqvi’s behavior, stating that the refusal to accept the trophy did not mean he was authorized to take it away. He demanded the immediate return of the trophy to India. The BCCI intends to strongly protest the events at the prize distribution ceremony and seek appropriate action.

The India-Pakistan rivalry in the Asia Cup was marked by controversy, extending beyond the game’s boundaries. Following India’s victory, Suryakumar Yadav’s team displayed resolve by declining the customary post-match handshake with Pakistan. They further made a strong statement by refusing to accept the trophy from ACC chairman Mohsin Naqvi, also the PCB chief and a Pakistani minister, known for his critical remarks towards India.

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia responded to the situation with strong criticism of Naqvi’s actions during the presentation ceremony. He described Naqvi’s act of taking the Asia Cup trophy and medals as “unsportsmanlike” and announced India’s intention to formally raise the issue at the upcoming ICC conference in Dubai. Saikia emphasized that the BCCI would not allow such behavior to go unaddressed. The Indian team decided against receiving the trophy from the ACC chairman due to his representation of a country engaged in conflict with India. However, the team was dismayed that the trophy and medals were taken away by him. The BCCI plans to lodge a strong protest against the ACC chairperson’s behavior during the next ICC conference in November in Dubai. On the field, Tilak Varma’s outstanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 69 off 53 balls, along with Rinku Singh’s winning boundary, secured India’s ninth Asia Cup title.

The upcoming India versus Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled for September 14 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, has ignited significant controversy. Public sentiment, amplified by recent events, including the Pahalgam Attack, has fueled calls for a boycott of the match. In response to these concerns, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia clarified the board’s decision to participate. He emphasized that the decision aligns with central government policy, particularly concerning multinational competitions. According to Saikia, boycotting such events, akin to the Olympics or FIFA tournaments, would be detrimental to India’s ability to host future international sporting events. He underscored the distinction between bilateral and multilateral events, noting that while boycotts might be considered in bilateral contexts, they are not feasible in multinational tournaments where participation is essentially mandated. Saikia also highlighted the potential adverse effects on India’s bid for the 2030 Olympics and the consequences for Indian sports federations should India refuse to participate in international competitions. The BCCI’s adherence to the central government’s guidelines, prioritizing the broader interests of sports and the players involved, was emphasized.

The upcoming India vs. Pakistan match in the Asia Cup 2025, scheduled for September 14 in Dubai, has ignited considerable debate, primarily due to the ongoing political tensions between the two nations. The backdrop of the match includes the tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, where numerous Indian tourists lost their lives, an event linked to Pakistan-sponsored militants. This has led to widespread questions and concerns, with many questioning the appropriateness of the match. In response, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia clarified the board’s position, stating that the BCCI is adhering to the Indian government’s policy, which permits Indian teams to participate in multinational tournaments like the Asia Cup and World Cups, but not in bilateral series. Saikia emphasized the potential consequences, including sanctions from international sporting bodies like FIFA, AFC, and the ICC, if India were to boycott these tournaments. He cited examples like Neeraj Chopra, illustrating how individual athletes could face penalties. Despite the current situation, the match is set to proceed as planned.

A joyous victory celebration for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) turned tragic when a stampede occurred, leading to the death of eleven people and injuring approximately fifty others. The incident unfolded after RCB’s first win in eighteen years. Authorities have taken action, with four individuals, including Nikhli Sosale, a marketing official for RCB, arrested for their involvement in the tragedy that occurred outside the Chinnaswamy Stadium. In response, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering introducing safety guidelines for victory celebrations to prevent similar incidents in the future.

BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia stated, “At some stage BCCI will have to do something. We cannot be a silent spectator.” He added, “It was a private affair of RCB, but we at the BCCI are responsible for cricket in India and we will try to ensure such incidents do not recur in future.”

The stampede may have been exacerbated by unclear event schedules and poor communication. Conflicting announcements about the event’s location, between Vidhana Soudha and the stadium, caused confusion and movement of people. Reports indicate that even some police officers were not fully informed of the event’s schedule, contributing to the chaotic atmosphere. Insufficient communication from ground staff also hampered efforts to manage the crowd effectively.
