  • Delhi Weather Today: Relief From Heat As IMD Predicts Light Rain And Thunderstorms |

    New Delhi: The IMD has forecast light rain in Delhi on Friday, potentially offering respite from the scorching heat beating down on the national capital. 

    On Thursday, the maximum temperature recorded at the Safdarjung Observatory, considered the official marker of the city, was 4.9 notches above normal at 44.8 degrees Celsius. 

    The Najafgarh weather station recorded a maximum temperature of 45.1 degrees Celsius, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. 

    Among Delhi’s other stations, Narela recorded a high of 45.3 degrees Celsius, Aya Nagar 46.4 degrees, Ridge 46.3 degrees and Palam 45.8 degrees, the weather office said in a bulletin. 

    The national capital was under an ‘orange’ alert, which stands for “be prepared” during the day. 

    The relative humidity oscillated between 15 per cent and 58 per cent, according to the IMD bulletin. 

    It has forecast partly cloudy skies with a possibility of thunderstorms and light rain or drizzle in a few places towards the afternoon and the evening on Friday. 

    The IMD has also predicted heatwave conditions in some areas, accompanied by strong surface winds reaching speeds of 35 kilometres per hour on Friday. 

    The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to hover around 44 and 30 degrees Celsius, respectively.

    Delhi Weather Update: Delhi today registered a temperature of 52.3 degrees celsius, the highest ever in the history of the national capital. The record temperature was registered at Delhi’s Mungeshpur. Amid the red alert and heatwave warning, Delhi’s power load has also surged to a record high. 

    Delhi’s peak power demand clocked 8302 MW, the highest ever in the history of the city. Delhi’s peak power demand had clocked 8000 MW on May 22. According to DISCOM officials, Delhi’s power demand has breached 7000 MW in the last 12 days.

    The Indian Meteorological Department has predicted heat wave to severe heat wave conditions at most places over Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh, and at many places over Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.

    Amid the heatwave, the Delhi Government issued an advisory regarding the usage of water. The Aam Aadmi Party government said that it has issued instructions to the CEO of the Delhi Jal Board to stop the wastage of water and ordered the formation of 200 teams to prevent the wastage of water across the city. “Car washing, overflowing of water tanks and use of domestic water connections for commercial purposes or at construction sites will be considered as a waste of water. Instructions were issued to impose a fine of Rs 2,000 on those wasting water,” said AAP.

    On the other hand, Lieutenant Governor of Delhi VK Saxena issued an advisory ordering people to allow labourers to get 3 hours off between 12 noon and 3pm.  

  • Relief In Sight: IMD Predicts Temprature Dip, Strong Winds In Delhi-NCR Region |

    Weather Update: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert predicting a relief from the scorching sun in Delhi-NCR over the next two days. This moderation comes amid intense heat affecting Delhi NCR and several other areas, causing disruptions to daily life and business operations. According to the IMD’s prediction, Delhi-NCR is expected to encounter strong winds, but the area will not face a heatwave until May 3.  

    A three-day advisory has been issued by the Meteorological Department for Delhi NCR, cautioning about winds gusting between 25 and 35 km/h. IMD predicts that Delhi’s maximum temperature will peak at 40 degrees Celsius, with the minimum expected to be 24 degrees Celsius. 

    Meanwhile, the plains along the Ganges are experiencing severe heat, prompting health advisories from authorities. 

    The IMD in its morning weather bulletin on Wednesday said, “Heat wave or severe heat wave conditions very likely to prevail in many places over Gangetic West Bengal; some parts of Odisha, Bihar; in isolated pockets of Sub-Himalyan West Bengal, Jharkhand on May 1st and 2nd and reduced in intesity thereafter with heat wave conditions in isolated pockets over the region.” 

    IMD forecasts heavy rain accompanied by storms and strong winds in northeastern India within the next five days. Northwestern India and the western Himalayan region may also experience strong winds and rain during this period. 

    With temperatures surpassing 40 degrees Celsius in numerous states, IMD has issued a severe heat alert. From April to June, temperatures are anticipated to rise rapidly, leading to potential heatwaves in South India, Central India, Eastern India, and Northwestern India.

    As per IMD, the maximum temperature in Delhi today is expected to be around 18 degrees Celsius, while the minimum temperature is likely to hover around 5 degrees Celsius.

  • Cold Wave: Delhi Shivers Under Dense Fog, Traffic, Flights Disrupted |

    New Delhi: Delhi experienced a foggy and freezing Sunday morning, affecting the movement of traffic and flights in the city. The mercury dipped to 7 degrees Celsius in RK Puram Area in the wee hours of the day. Many people, especially the homeless, sought shelter in the night camps run by the government, where they were provided with blankets, beds, hot water, and food. The night camps are meant to help the homeless survive the harsh winter conditions.

    The city had witnessed its first cold wave day of the season on Friday, as per the India Meterological Department (IMD). A cold wave day is declared when the minimum temperature drops below 4 degrees Celsius. The IMD also issued a warning for the travellers amid the severe cold and fog.

    It tweeted from its X handle, “Very dense fog layer extends over Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, North Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh. Passengers on highways need to drive extremely carefully and only with fog lights.” It further advised, “Journeys need to be halted until fog reduction by morning especially on expressways. Very Dense fog reporting over Amritsar, Chandigarh, Patiala, Ambala, Ganganagar, Palam, Safdarjung, Lucknow with visibility 0 meter since 0230 hrs IST of today.”

    The IMD said that the fog situation is likely to continue in some parts of northwest India for the next three to four days, especially in the morning hours. The Delhi Police also appealed to the motorists to drive safely in the low visibility conditions.

    It posted from its official X handle, “The Meteorological Department, Delhi, has forecast dense to very dense fog on January 14, 2024, and dense fog on January 15 & 16, 2024. We appeal to all to drive carefully in the fog.” The thick fog also affected the flight operations in the city, causing delays in several flights. Officials said that Vistara’s Delhi-to-Pune flight was delayed by more than an hour due to the fog.
