New Delhi witnessed a game-changing moment for India’s defense indigenization efforts as the Indian Air Force signed a pivotal memorandum with GE Aerospace. The agreement focuses on setting up an indigenous repair hub for the F404-IN20 engines equipping HAL’s Tejas light combat aircraft.

Slated for complete ownership and management by the IAF, the depot will benefit from GE’s world-class technical support, including specialized training, on-site personnel, spares, and advanced tools. This move is designed to sharpen India’s in-house maintenance prowess while minimizing reliance on overseas services.

Experts predict that the facility will slash engine overhaul timelines, enhancing the Tejas squadron’s mission readiness and operational tempo. It’s a clear step toward operational autonomy in a critical area of military aviation.

‘Our partnership underscores GE’s dedication to powering India’s military modernization,’ said Rita Fleherty, GE’s VP for Defense Sales. She highlighted how the depot would optimize engine performance for Tejas, ensuring the IAF stays ahead with modern tech.

GE’s portfolio in India is impressive: from engines in P-8I and MH-60R platforms for the Navy to Apaches for the Air Force, and LM2500 turbines in key naval vessels like INS Vikrant. With a Pune facility and extensive local supply chain ties spanning 13 partners, GE has invested deeply in India over 40 years, making this deal a natural evolution.
