In a tragic incident from Mango, East Singhbhum, a 42-year-old car driver, Abhijit Ghosh, was found dead by suicide late Sunday night. He reportedly took his own life by hanging himself in his room in Old Subhash Colony. According to his family, Ghosh had been struggling with severe financial difficulties and immense mental stress for a prolonged period.

The victim, who worked as a professional car driver, was deeply distressed over his inability to meet his car loan payments. It is understood that he owed approximately 18,000 rupees in outstanding installments. His father-in-law, Aushit Bhattacharya, also mentioned that Ghosh had a habit of substance abuse, which further exacerbated his financial woes and overall condition. On Sunday, he had gone out for a local driving assignment but, upon returning home late in the evening, he reportedly locked himself in his room and tragically ended his life.

Disturbed by his prolonged silence, his family members forced open his room door, only to discover him hanging. He was immediately rushed to MGM Hospital, where medical professionals pronounced him deceased after examination. The heartbreaking incident has cast a pall of grief over the family. Authorities have taken possession of the body for a post-mortem examination and have initiated a thorough investigation into the matter.

In anticipation of the upcoming Bihar assembly elections, all political parties are focusing on the women’s vote. Recognizing this, the government is striving to economically empower women in the state.…

In anticipation of the upcoming Bihar assembly elections, all political parties are focusing on the women’s vote. Recognizing this, the government is striving to economically empower women in the state. Before the elections, the state government distributed ₹10,000 each to numerous women associated with the Jeevika project, aiming to strengthen their financial standing. This move is considered a strategic initiative by the current administration. However, a significant number of women linked to the Jeevika project across Bihar are experiencing distress, fearing that the financial aid they are receiving will be seized by loan recovery agents who are already targeting them.

Despite the government’s stance that this decision is welfare-oriented, the reality on the ground is different. In the village of Kinaru, Muzaffarpur district, women involved in Jeevika are burdened by debt. Many women in the village are struggling to manage loan interest payments. They are now concerned that the ₹10,000 from the government will be taken by bank recovery agents. These agents have reportedly indicated that the government’s aid must be used to settle outstanding loans.

Many women are facing similar challenges. Muneja Khatoon states that women borrow from neighbors to repay Jeevika loans. Recovery agents from microfinance companies often persistently pressure them at their doorsteps, leading them to borrow from neighbors to satisfy the agents. Savita Devi explains that she took out loans when her husband fell ill and then took another from a microfinance company, resulting in a double burden of debt on her family. She faces constant pressure from recovery agents.

This situation is not isolated to Kinaru village; it is prevalent in surrounding areas. Rekha Devi points out that the loan amount received is often less than what was applied for. Sometimes, the debt amount exceeds the initial proposal. Some families, unable to repay their debts, have left the village, their homes now locked. Some women reported that these debts have led to tragic consequences, with some choosing suicide as a result of the financial strain.

The government claims to have spent ₹40,000 crore on 1.3 crore women connected to the Jeevika project, while microfinance companies have distributed approximately ₹50,000 crore in loans. The crucial question remains: How will the government address the challenges faced by women, who are considered a key voter base?

Priyanka Gandhi, a Member of Parliament representing Wayanad, Kerala, is currently in her constituency. However, her visit has been overshadowed by the alleged suicides of two Congress party workers, putting the party on the defensive. According to reports, one party worker died by suicide last year, and another recently took their own life, leading to scrutiny of the Congress. The CPM has criticized the Congress, citing internal problems within the Wayanad unit.

Last year, N.M. Vijayan, the former District Congress Committee (DCC) treasurer, and his son died by suicide after consuming poison. More recently, Jose Nelledam, a senior Congress leader and member of the Mullankolli panchayat, also died by suicide. Following the alleged suicide of a local party worker in Mullankolli, Wayanad, Padmaja, Vijayan’s daughter-in-law, attempted suicide by cutting her wrist. Police reported that Padmaja was hospitalized and is now in stable condition.

Vijayan and his son reportedly took their lives due to debt. Media reports indicate Padmaja stated that the party promised financial assistance after Vijayan’s death but had not fulfilled the promise. Vijayan (78) and his son (38) allegedly took their lives after incurring significant debt, claiming they had taken loans for party activities and were unable to repay them. After the incident, the Congress assured it would take responsibility and settle the family’s debt. However, Padmaja stated that the family still owed over two crore rupees, with less than 20 lakh rupees paid. She stated that Vijayan took the loan for the party and not personal needs, but the party has reneged on its promise to cover the liabilities. The family plans to protest in front of the DCC office and submit a memorandum to the Chief Minister. Senior Congress leader and MP Rajmohan Unnithan stated that the investigation into Vijayan’s death is ongoing, and funds will be disbursed after the investigation is complete.

The recent suicide of Jose Nelledam, a senior Congress leader and Mullankolli panchayat member, has further embarrassed the party. Nelledam was found dead in a pond near his home, having allegedly consumed poison and cut his wrist. In a video released after his death, Nelledam accused that he was targeted under false charges related to the arrest of fellow leader Kanattumalayil Dhyanvadan. Dhyanvadan was arrested after alcohol and explosives were found at his home, but was released 13 days later when it was found that the items were planted by another party worker. Nelledam admitted that he informed the police but claimed that he was wrongly accused. Wayanad DCC president N.D. Appachan stated that the police recovered a suicide note from Nelledam’s home and its contents should be made public. He expressed suspicion of impropriety and suggested political motives behind the police action. He added that the DCC is in contact with Nelledam’s family, offering support, and denied any internal conflicts within the party.

Meanwhile, the CPM has criticized the Congress regarding internal problems in Wayanad. Minister V. Sivankutty stated that the Congress has become a mafia in Kerala. He alleged that Congress now exhibits activities like murders, abetting suicide, open violence, and abortions. He also referenced the attempted suicide of the late former DCC treasurer N.M. Vijayan’s daughter-in-law in Wayanad. He added that the internal problems of the Congress have become a social problem, and those who criticize are targeted with cyberattacks, with several Congress leaders also falling victim.

A bizarre incident has come to light in Gopalganj, Bihar. A young man borrowed two lakh rupees from his uncle to play an online game, hoping to get rich. However, he lost the money. To repay the debt, he approached a doctor. The doctor and local residents, displaying quick thinking, informed the youth’s family.

The youth, identified as Sujit Kumar, a resident of Sirmai village in the Saran district, runs a studio and provides videography services for weddings. He became addicted to an online game called DBG after seeing an advertisement on Instagram.

Sujit initially won 30,000 rupees after investing 10,000 rupees in the game. He then became obsessed with the game, dreaming of wealth. His uncle sent money for a motorcycle, but Sujit gambled this money, hoping to double it. He planned to then return his mother’s money and have some left over for himself, but he lost.

Sujit accumulated a debt of 2 lakh rupees. To pay off the debt, he fled from his village in Saran district to Gopalganj, telling his family he was going away for work. He went to a private clinic near Ambedkar Chowk in Gopalganj. There, he requested the doctor to buy his kidney, citing his need for money.

When the doctor inquired about the reason behind his decision, Sujit revealed his story. He confessed to losing two lakh rupees in an online game and wanting to sell his kidney to settle the debt. Hearing this, the doctor alerted the people nearby.

The people present promptly intervened and counselled the youth. Subsequently, his parents were informed. His mother and relatives arrived and convinced him to return home with them. The incident has become a topic of discussion in the area.

A dispute over a mere 50 rupees led to a fatal altercation between two friends in the Giridih district of Jharkhand. The incident resulted in the death of Anoul Ansari, who was brutally murdered by his friend, Maksood Ansari. The Superintendent of Police (SDPO) of Giridih, Jitvahan Oraon, confirmed the arrest of the accused, Maksood Ansari, and revealed details of the crime. The SDPO explained that the murder occurred on the night of August 31st near the Mundradih mosque in the Bengabad police station area. The altercation arose from a financial disagreement. Maksood Ansari attacked and killed Anoul with a knife. A case was registered at the Bengabad police station, prompting the formation of a Special Investigation Team (SIT) by the Superintendent of Police. Utilizing technical analysis, the SIT apprehended Maksood Ansari from the Ashgandho forest and recovered the murder weapon. Further investigation is ongoing to determine if others were involved in the crime. The victim, Anoul Ansari, had borrowed ₹200 from Maksood Ansari. On the day of the incident, he returned ₹150 of the debt. However, the remaining ₹50 sparked a dispute, escalating into a physical fight that ultimately led to the tragic outcome.

Maksood Ansari repeatedly stabbed Anoul Ansari, severely injuring him, which later resulted in his death. After committing the crime, Maksood Ansari went into hiding. The SIT team of Giridih police arrested him. The incident of a friend killing a friend has become a topic of discussion throughout the city. In a separate incident just days prior, on August 19th, an elderly couple, Navgopal Saha and his wife Bibhu Saha, residents of Chorkatta village in the Muffasil police station area of Dumka district, were brutally murdered in their home. Their son-in-law, Subal Saha, was arrested in connection with the crime, allegedly for not paying approximately ₹2 lakh.

A man in Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh, was initially presumed drowned after his clothes and slippers were found near the Gangrel Dam. A search operation was launched by police and divers. However, after 12 days, the man was located in Delhi. He had staged his disappearance, apparently due to being burdened by debt. On May 24th, Hemant Chandravanshi from Kawardha, along with friends, visited Dhamtari and stayed at a resort near the dam. The next morning, after his friends went to buy supplies, Chandravanshi’s belongings were found, but he was nowhere to be seen. His companions reported him missing to the Rudri police, who began a search, initially focusing on the possibility of drowning. When the search yielded no results, the police became suspicious and began investigating further. They tracked another phone number of Chandravanshi’s, which led them to Delhi. The police apprehended him there and brought him back to Dhamtari. According to ASP Manishankar Chandra, Chandravanshi created the scenario due to being under heavy debt and planned to escape via the jungle. Legal action will be taken against him.
