  • Michael Keaton’s Batman returns in first ‘The Flash’ trailer

    By Express News Service

The first trailer of The Flash was released on Sunday during the Super Bowl. The film is one of the remaining DC films developed before the takeover of James Gunn and Peter Safran as co-heads of DC Studios. They have now begun restructuring the DC Extended Universe.

Starring Ezra Miller, the trailer of The Flash explores the main plot points of his next, and maybe last adventures as the Flash. The trailer shows that Barry Allen uses his super-speed powers to travel back in time to save his mother, who was murdered when he was still a little boy.

Unfortunately, he inadvertently messes with the timeline as time travel is dangerous, and ends up visiting alternate dimensions where he can’t differentiate between friends and enemies. The story is based on the Flashpoint comics.

The Flash also stars Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck as different versions of Batman. Directed by Andy Muschietti, the film’s screenplay is penned by Christina Hodson. The film’s cast also includes Kiersey Clemons, Maribel Verdú, and Ron Livingston. Sasha Calle also shows up as Supergirl. Social media stars Rudy Mancuso and Saoirse-Monica Jackson are also involved in the project in undisclosed roles. The Flash is slated for release on June 16, 2023.

  • Henry Cavill confirms he is not returning as Superman after James Gunn announces new film

    By PTI

LOS ANGELES: Hollywood star Henry Cavill on Thursday announced he will not be returning as Superman in the upcoming DC films.

Cavill confirmed his departure from the role, which he has essayed since 2013’s “Man of Steel”, in a post on Instagram.

The news comes almost two months after he announced his comeback as Superman.

“I will, after all, not be returning as Superman.

After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life,” the actor, who last appeared as Superman in 2017’s “Justice League”, wrote.

Warner Bros hired “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn and veteran executive Peter Safran as co-chairmen and CEOs of the newly formed DC Studios in late October.

Since then there have been reports that the whole Zack Snyder-created DC Universe could be done away with, including “Wonder Woman.”

“The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build.

I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes,” Cavill added.

The Hollywood star shared the post hours after Gunn announced he is writing a new feature film about Superman.

The filmmaker said the upcoming movie will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, “so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.”

“Peter & I have a DC slate ready to go, which we couldn’t be more over the moon about; we’ll be able to share some exciting information about our first projects at the beginning of the new year.

Among those on the slate is Superman.

In the initial stages, our story will be focusing on an earlier part of Superman’s life, so the character will not be played by Henry Cavill.

But we just had a great meeting with Henry and we’re big fans and we talked about a number of exciting possibilities to work together in the future,” Gunn wrote on Instagram.

Further details about the new DC Studios slate will be announced in January.

  • DC Films shelve ‘New Gods’ with Ava DuVernay, ‘The Trench’ with James Wan

    By PTI
LOS ANGELES: DC Films and Warner Bros are not moving forward with the DC Comics adaptations of “New Gods” from director Ava DuVernay and “Aquaman” spin-off “The Trench” by filmmaker James Wan.

Comic book writer Tom King was attached to pen the script for “New Gods”, while Peter Safran was on board as a producer on “The Trench”.

Warner Bros and DC shared the news of cancellation in a statement issued to The Hollywood Reporter. “As part of our DC slate, some legacy development titles including ‘New Gods’ and ‘The Trench’ will not be moving forward,” Warner Bros and DC said in a statement.

“We thank our partners Ava DuVernay, Tom King, James Wan and Peter Safran for their time and collaboration during this process and look forward to our continued partnership with them on other DC stories. The projects will remain in their skillful hands if they were to move forward in the future,” he added.

“New Gods” would have brought to the screen various comic book characters created by the legendary artist Jack Kirby. “The Trench”, meanwhile, was touted to be a horror-inflected one-off set in the dangerous oceanic abyss filled with the ravenous aquatic creatures first seen in Wan’s 2018 blockbuster “Aquaman”.

Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald had written the script. The two projects may have been shelved but DuVernay and Wan are still working with DC on teen superhero show “Naomi” and “Aquaman 2”, respectively.

  • Actor Helen Mirren to play villain in ‘Shazam: Fury Of The Gods’

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: British actor Helen Mirren has been signed on to play the role of villain in the upcoming New Line and DC Films’ ‘Shazam: Fury of the Gods’, the sequel to the box office hit ‘Shazam!’.

According to Deadline, Mirren will portray the role of Hespera, a daughter of Atlas in ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’, which will continue the story of teenage Billy Batson who, upon reciting the magic word “SHAZAM!” is struck by the Living Lightning of the gods and transformed into his adult superhero alter ego.

Levi will be reprising his role as the kid-at-heart superhero who is bestowed with the powers of six gods: the wisdom of Solomon, the strength of Hercules, the stamina of Atlas, the power of Zeus, the courage of Achilles and the speed of Mercury.

While Shazam is a formidable champion, Billy is still just a fun-loving kid trying to navigate high school while learning how to use his powers.

The same team which was behind the filmmaking of ‘Shazam!’ will be reuniting to create the sequel. David F. Sandberg will direct the movie from a screenplay by Henry Gayden and Peter Safran will be producing through The Safran Company.

The movie based on the DC character created by Bill Parker and C.C. Beck was the No. 1 film worldwide on its opening weekend in 2019. It went on to earn over USD 366 million worldwide on a relatively modest budget for a superhero film.

As per Deadline, Mirren won an Oscar and a BAFTA for her performance in ‘The Queen’, a Tony Award and an Olivier Award for the same role in ‘The Audience’, three BAFTA Television Awards, four Primetime Emmy Awards, and five SAG Awards for various roles.

Her diverse body of work includes a starring role in the upcoming anthology series ‘Solos’ as well as the film ‘F9’, reprising her role as Queenie from the latest Fast and Furious installment.

  • Warner Bros re-ups Walter Hamada as president of DC Films

    By ANI
WASHINGTON: The American diversified multinational mass media Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc has re-appointed Walter Hamada as a president of its subsidiary film studio DC films.

According to Variety, Hamada will continue to oversee the DC film fragment, along with features produced for the HBO Max streaming platform. His new contract will run through 2023.

Toby Emmerich, chairman of Warner Bros Pictures Group said, “Walter is not only passionate about story and the DC canon, he’s also a thoughtful and incredibly talented executive who is fully committed to investing the time and care necessary for moviemaking on this scale.”

“With Walter overseeing our DC movies for theatrical exhibition and on HBO Max, we are excited for him and his team to bring more of these stories to life, working with new and established talent to broaden the reach and diversity of the DC cinematic universe,” he added.

The re-enrolment comes after Hamada’s name came up during an investigation by Warner Bros into conduct on its original Justice League. Hamada was not in charge of DC feature production and release of Justice League; he was a New Line executive at the time but has been looped in to the matter as acting president, reported Variety.

Hamada currently oversees WBPG’s slate of films based on DC’s superheroes and super-villains, as well as titles based on other characters and stories also licensed from DC including its Vertigo and Mad Magazine imprints.

The group in a conversation with Variety told that it is looking forward to increasing its production level through producing several feature-length productions specifically for the HBO Max platform each year, while continuing to produce a roster of theatrical releases through the Warner Bros Pictures and New Line labels.

In 2019, Hamada oversaw production of ‘Shazam!’ and Warner Bros Pictures’ blockbuster ‘Joker’, which earned almost $1.1 billion at the global box office. It was nominated for 11 Oscars, winning best actor for Joaquin Phoenix and for Hildur Gudnadottir’s original score.

In February 2020, DC-Based Films released ‘Birds of Prey’ and Galo Gadot starred ‘Wonder Woman 1984’, which received a mixed review from critics and fans across the globe.

Of the late, DC films will reportedly be coming up with ‘The Suicide Squad’, in theaters worldwide and on HBO Max in the U.S. this summer, and ‘The Batman’, ‘Aquaman 2’, ‘The Flash’, ‘Black Adam’, ‘Shazam!’, ‘Fury of the Gods’, ‘Batgirl’, ‘Static Shock’, and the recently announced Wonder Woman 3 in 2022.
