Given his success across different positions, there is optimism that Smith can excel as an opener believes Michael Clarke.

I get a buzz out of fielding: Delhi Capitals opener David Warner
By PTI
MUMBAI: Delhi Capitals’ swashbuckling opener David Warner says he gets “a buzz” out of his fielding.
Warner may have got out for a golden duck in the team’s previous IPL match against Punjab Kings, but he made vital contributions in the field.
When asked about his outstanding fielding, Warner said, “There are two facets of the game for me – batting and fielding. I look to stop ones in the ring and take some catches near the boundary. Fortunately, I got one and it was a great result for us. I get a buzz out of fielding and I try to save runs for the bowlers.”
Delhi Capitals broke into the top four in the standings after registering a 17-run victory over Punjab Kings on Monday.
Speaking about their performance, the Australian said, “The team has a never say die attitude. We are fighters and we play to the best of our abilities, whether it’s with the ball or bat. There’s a hunger and desire to help each other out as we care for each other.”
Sarfaraz Khan, who played a blistering knock of 32 runs from 16 balls, said he enjoyed the role of an opener.
“I had never opened before the game against Punjab Kings so I was looking to enjoy the position. Before I got this opportunity, I had a feeling that I could bat well as an opener and things went according to plan against Punjab,” Sarfaraz said.
The batter also motivated the team after their batting innings.
“I wouldn’t have been happy if my innings wouldn’t have helped the team win. The environment within the team is good and we have to play well in one more game to qualify for the playoffs.
“I was telling everyone in the team after our batting that it’s only a matter of one wicket. If we get one wicket then we’ll be in the game and we kept picking up wickets throughout Punjab’s innings.
Sarfaraz also spoke about his father’s impact on his cricket career.
“The credit goes to my father for whatever I am today. He has driven from Mumbai to Uttar Pradesh to take me for games along the way. We made stops in various places such as Madhya Pradesh, Ghaziabad, Mathura and Delhi so that I could play matches and my father has driven around 2500 km for me.”
The Delhi Capitals will take on Mumbai Indians in their last league match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday.

By ANI
NEW DELHI: Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) has not retained star openers David Warner and Jonny Bairstow ahead of the mega auction of the upcoming season. All the eight IPL franchises will reveal the list of their retained players later today. SRH thanked all the players ahead of the event on Tuesday.
“We thank the players for their contribution to SRH over the years. This is not a goodbye, as we hope to welcome back some Risers in the auction,” SRH captioned the post on Instagram. Commenting on the post, Warner express gratitude towards the fans and penned an emotional note confirming he won’t play for SRH in the upcoming season.
“Thanks to all of you for your support over the years, up and downs, my family and I can’t stress enough how much we appreciated the love and passion you showed towards us and the team. Candice and I truely wish all the fans the very best for the future and hope who ever you wish to support the best. Love the Warner’s,” Warner said.
Bairstow, the England opener, also thanked fans for the support during his stint with SRH. “Thank you all for your support! Hopefully at some point our paths cross again in the future,” Bairstow commented on the post.
The two new Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises — Lucknow and Ahmedabad were allotted a budget of Rs 33 crore to pick three players who go back into the pool before the mega auction begins.
In the mail sent by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to all the franchises, which had been accessed by ANI, the rules were formally conveyed and the salary purse for all the teams was set at Rs 90 crore.
The amount is an increase from the IPL 2021 auction as then the purse was of Rs 85 crore. The eight existing franchises (CSK, KKR, RCB, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and SunRisers Hyderabad) have been allowed to retain up to four players.
The BCCI had set the retention window for the eight older franchises from November 1-30, and the window for Lucknow and Ahmedabad is from December 1-25.
If one of the eight existing franchises decides to retain four players, then they will be debited Rs 16 crore for the first player, Rs 12 crore for the second player, Rs 8 crore for the third player, and Rs 6 crore for the fourth player and the total deduction will be 42 crore.
For the eight franchises, rules have been set that they cannot retain more than three Indians (capped/uncapped). They cannot retain more than two overseas players and not more than two uncapped Indian players.
For the two new franchises — Lucknow and Ahmedabad — they cannot pick more than two Indian players (capped/uncapped). They cannot pick more than one overseas player and more than one Indian uncapped player.

SRH management didn’t give reason for sacking me from captaincy, reveals Warner
By PTI
NEW DELHI: Star Australia batter David Warner on Tuesday claimed that the Sunrisers Hyderabad management did not provide him with any reason as to why he was removed from captaincy in the IPL earlier this season.
Warner was replaced by New Zealander Kane Williamson as SRH captain during the first half of the IPL in India as the team was lying at the bottom after losing five out of six matches.
The change in captaincy did not reverse SRH’s fortunes as they finished at the bottom of the IPL points table.
A struggling Warner was omitted from the playing eleven in the last few matches when the lucrative T20 tournament resumed in the UAE.
“With the utmost respect for the owners, Trevor Baylis, Laxman, Moody and Murali, when a decision gets made, it has to be a unanimous one. You don’t know who the person is going for you and who isn’t,” Warner told ‘India Today’.
“The other disappointing thing for me was not being explained why I was dropped as captain. If you want to go along the lines of form, it is a difficult one because, I guess whatever you have done in the past would have some weight moving forward, you would think.”
The 34-year-old Warner said being stripped off captaincy was “a tough pill to swallow” but he would want to move on.
“Especially when you have played about 100 games for the franchise, I think I had four bad games in those first five matches in Chennai.
“It is difficult, a tough pill to swallow. There are still questions to which I think I’ll never get answers, but you have to move on,” he added.
The Australian said that he would love to represent SRH again but that is not in his hands.
“I would love nothing more than to represent Sunrisers but obviously, that decision is with the owners,” he said.
“I really enjoyed my time with Sunrisers, you all out there (fans) make it so special for us (family). Hopefully, I’ll get to come back out there, whether it be in the SRH uniform or someone else’s. I will salute you all when I come back to play in Hyderabad,” he added.

Challenging season but can’t overreact: SRH captain Kane Williamson after loss to KKR
By PTI
DUBAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad captain Kane Williamson feels that one shouldn’t overreact or try to over-compensate after what has been challenging season with the franchise set to finish last in eight team table. Williamson took over captaincy from David Warner but SRH’s fortunes remained the same.
“The surfaces have varied a lot and I think we have seen that teams that have been successful have been able to adapt to these surfaces. Once again, it is important for us not to overreact and overcorrect. It has definitely been a challenging season for us in that aspect,” Williamson said after the defeat against KKR.
Williamson said that when performance is not great, focus is shifted on a lot of things which adds to the problems. “I suppose personally, standing in as skipper in the second half of the tournament, you try to do have a collective focus. There are a number of things around the corner that can take the attention of the players, but you known that as a team, we are fortunate to be here,” Williamson further said.
Williamson was disappointed that the couldn’t build on powerplay overs. “We got through the powerplay and there was an opportunity to build towards a 140-150 total and obviously we fell short of it. Williamson said after SRH went down by six wickets here on Sunday for the team’s 10th defeat of the ongoing IPL seaso,” he said.
The surface didn’t allow any batter to settle down, said Williamson. “It was a challenging surface, it was hard to get your rhythm on because of the tennis ball bounce. Particularly with the new ball, it sat on the surface and it reflected on the low strike rates which have been quite interesting in the second half of the tournament,” he said about Sunday’s game.

‘It’s not about who …’: Warner’s cryptic message amidst confusion over absence from SRH dug-out
By ANI
NEW DELHI: Out-of-form SunRisers Hyderabad opener David Warner has in recent times failed to make it to the playing XI in the second half of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League in UAE. While the coaching staff has said it is looking to give youngsters opportunity, fans feel Warner has been handed a raw deal. The former skipper on Thursday evening posted a message on social media that has seen the debate intensify further.
Taking to Instagram, Warner posted: “It’s not about who is real to your face, It’s about who stays real behind your back.” The post also had a few ‘thumbs up’ emojis.
He also posted a short video of him watching SRH’s game against Chennai Super Kings on television and that has seen fans further debate on whether he should at least have been in the dug-out sharing his experience with the young players.
Speaking after the win against Rajasthan Royals on Monday, SRH coach Trevor Bayliss confirmed that the management is looking to give new players in the squad a chance to make a name for themselves, looking at how the side cannot make the playoffs this season.
“We can’t make the final so have made a decision that we want the young players to experience not just the matches but time at the ground, around the set-up, and for this match we made the decision. He was not the only experienced player we left back at the hotel,” Bayliss said during a post-match press conference.
“We have a number of young players that haven’t been to the ground. Even as reserves. We wanted to give them an opportunity to come along and experience that. That may continue for a few more games yet. We don’t know,” he added.
Further speaking about Warner, Bayliss said: “We have got to sit down in a day or two and pick a team and pick a squad of 18. That’s just the way it is. Dave is obviously watching the game back in the hotel and giving the guys support. It is the same as everyone else. We are all in this together.
“Look that certainly has not been discussed. It is something that..this is the last year before a major auction. Those decisions will be made further down the line. He has been a great contributor to Hyderabad Sunrisers for a number of years now. He is very well respected with the number of runs he has scored. I am sure he has got a lot more runs in him yet in the IPL.”

David Warner says won’t be at stadium again amid speculation of Sunrisers Hyderabad stint ending
By PTI
DUBAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad’s big-hitting opener David Warner, who has been dropped from the playing XI because of poor form, has said that he won’t be seen at the stadium “again”, hinting that his stint with the struggling franchise could be over.
Warner was axed last night from the game against Rajasthan Royals, which SRH won by seven wickets.
That win aside, the franchise has battled a poor run with only two wins from 10 matches, which has left them at the bottom of the points table and out of contention for a playoffs berth.
Warner’s absence from the team dugout did not go unnoticed and fans wondered about his whereabouts underneath an instagram post by SRH.
Responding to the queries, Warner posted, “Unfortunately won’t be again but keep supporting, please.”
Warner has been woefully out of form this season, having accumulated just 181 runs in eight matches so far at an average of 24.37.
His strike rate, at present, is the lowest in all his IPL stints, making it his worst season in the league.
The 34-year-old joined SRH in 2014 and captained the side to its maiden IPL title in 2016.
Dropped from the leadership role after the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, he came back as skipper in 2020.
He was again removed as captain during the first leg of this season due to the team’s poor run and differences with Team Director Tom Moody and head coach Trevor Bayliss.
“We can’t make the finals, so we made a decision that we want the youngsters to experience not just the matches, but time at the ground and around the set-up,” Bayliss had said at the post match press conference on Monday when asked about Warner staying back at his hotel room.
IPL sources have revealed that he will be released at the end of the season and go back to the auction pool.

Wanted to give youngsters chance, so dropped David Warner: Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Trevor Bayliss
By PTI
DUBAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Trevor Bayliss said a struggling David Warner was dropped from the playing squad against Rajasthan Royals to give the youngsters in the side a chance as they are already out of contention for a play-off berth in the Indian Premier League.
SRH beat RR by seven wickets, riding on half centuries from opener Jason Roy and skipper Kane Williamson on Monday night, after the team management decided to leave out star Australian Warner who has been struggling for form.
“We can’t make the finals, so we made a decision that we want the youngsters to experience not just the matches, but time at the ground and around the set-up,” Bayliss said at the post match press conference.
“We have a number of young players who haven’t even been to the ground, even as reserves, so we wanted to give them opportunity to come and experience a game. And that might continue for a few more games, we’ve got to sit down in a day or two and pick a team and a squad of 18.”
Bayliss said Warner was supporting his team-mates from the hotel.
“Dave obviously was watching the game at the hotel and giving his support to the boys. Just like everyone else. We’re all in this together,” quipped the head coach.
Bayliss was specifically asked if this could be the beginning of the end of Warner at SRH, to which he said, “Look, that certainly hasn’t been discussed. This is the last year before the major final (mega auction), those decisions will be made later. He (Warner) has been a great contributor to Sunrisers for a number of years and he’s very well-respected. And with the amount of runs he has scored, I’m sure he has got a lot more runs in him in the IPL,” Bayliss signed off.
SRH, who are already out of reckoning for a play-off berth, next play against Chennai Super Kings on September 30 in Sharjah.

Sahabaz, Maxwell lead Royal Challengers Bangalore to beat Sunrisers Hyderabad by 6 runs
By PTI
CHENNAI: Left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed (3/7) dished out a match-winning performance after Glenn Maxwell’s half-century to help Royal Challengers Bangalore notch up a six-run win over Sunrisers Hyderabad in the Indian Premier League here on Wednesday.Put in to bat, RCB managed 149 for eight on the back of Maxwell’s 41-ball 59 before Shahbaz changed the complexion of the match by dismissing Manish Pandey (38), Jonny Bairstow (12) and Abdul Samad (0) in one over, as SRH ended at 143 for nine in the stipulated 20 overs.
The victory propelled RCB to the top of the table.
Chasing a modest total, SRH lost opener Wriddhiman Saha (1) cheaply in the beginning of the third over.
However, skipper David Warner (54) and Pandey looked to make short work of the chase, galloping towards the target with the Sunrisers needing 73 off the last 10 overs.
The duo looked in ominous touch, smashing boundaries every over to keep the score board ticking until the 14the over when the Australian, who hit seven fours and a six, was dismissed off a Kyle Jamieson off-cutter.
RCB gained confidence after Warner’s dismissal, their bowlers limiting the boundaries.
With the pressure mounting, Bairstow, Pandey and Samad tried to target Shahbaz but mistimed their shots to return to the pavilion in the 17th over.
Vijay Shankar (3) and Jason Holder (4) too struggled.
Rashid Khan injected some hope in the SRH camp smashing 18 off nine balls before he was run out.
Earlier, SRH bowlers, led by West Indian all-rounder Jason Holder (3/30) and star spinner Rashid Khan (2/18), put up superlative show and picked up wickets at regular intervals.
For RCB, Maxwell was the top scorer, hitting five fours and three maximums with skipper Virat Kohli (33) Shahbaz Ahmed (14) and Kyle Jamieson (12) providing valuable contributions.
Put in to bat, RCB were off to a decent start with Kohli and opener Devdutt Padikkal (11) hitting a few boundaries.
However, Sunrisers didn’t have to wait long for their first breakthrough as a back of the length delivery in the third over by Bhuvneshwar Kumar (1/30) spelled the end of Padikkal, who had returned after recovering from COVID-19.
Shahbaz was the next to depart after playing a quick cameo, leaving RCB at 47 for two.
At the halfway mark, Maxwell raised the tempo as the big-hitting Australian smashed Shahbaz Nadeem (1/36) for two sixes and a four in the first three balls of the 11th over, with Kohli joining the party with a boundary.
The two stitched a 44-run partnership before Jason Holder got rid of the RCB skipper as wickets continued to fall at regular intervals.
With AB de Villiers (1) in the middle, SRH captain David Warner introduced spin once again, bringing on versatile leg-spinner Rashid, and the move immediately paid dividends.
The dangerous South African slapped the ball straight to Warner at covers with the slow nature of the Chepauk track coming to the fore once again.
The Afghan spinner struck once again, getting rid of Washinton Sundar (8).
With Dan Christian also gone, Maxwell smashed three fours and a maximum in the last three overs.
Former champions SRH lost their opening match to Kolkata Knight Riders while RCB beat Mumbai Indians in the tournament opener.
