A 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck Afghanistan on August 31, 2025. Over 2,200 people have died, and the death toll is expected to rise. Approximately 500,000 people have been affected, with half of them being children. Many of the earthquake victims had been deported from Pakistan and Iran. The United Nations (UN) reports that 5,230 homes in 49 villages have been completely destroyed, and another 672 homes have been partially damaged. UN teams have yet to reach 362 other villages due to damaged roads, making it difficult to assess the extent of the damage there. The journey from Jalalabad to a location 100 km away took 6.5 hours because of narrow roads and landslides. Numerous trucks and vehicles carrying aid are facing difficulties in reaching the affected areas. The situation of the people is dire, with many forced to sleep in the open. They lack food, clean drinking water, and sanitation facilities. The UN warns of a potential cholera outbreak due to open defecation. Women and children are facing the most significant challenges and require clean water, warm clothes, and tents, especially with the onset of snowfall expected in late October. The UN is appealing for an emergency fund to provide tents, food, water, and medicine. The Taliban administration is cooperating with relief efforts, and women are being included in relief teams.

Severe weather conditions across several Indian states have led to critical situations, with Punjab being particularly hard hit. The state has tragically witnessed 46 fatalities due to the floods. Millions have been affected, nearly 2,000 villages are submerged, and approximately 2 lakh hectares of crops have been damaged. In light of these dire circumstances, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Punjab.

PM Modi will be visiting Punjab on September 9th to assess the flood-affected regions, with a focus on Gurdaspur. This visit is anticipated with optimism by the people of Punjab, as there is potential for the Prime Minister to announce a significant relief package. The possibility of an economic package or compensation for flood victims is under consideration.

Flood-like conditions have persisted in Punjab since August 17th. Persistent heavy rainfall has resulted in the submersion of over 2,000 villages. Residents have been evacuated and relocated to safer areas. The floods have caused widespread damage, destroying over 2 lakh hectares of crops. Media reports suggest the state has already incurred losses exceeding 10,000 crore.

The Punjab government has declared the state a disaster zone and has requested a 60,000 crore fund from the central government. During PM Modi’s visit, there’s an expectation that a relief package will be announced.

Multiple districts in Punjab are grappling with the impact of the floods. The army is actively involved in rescue and relief operations. Furthermore, Bollywood actor Salman Khan, alongside other actors, has extended support by adopting villages to aid those affected by the floods.

The United States Department of Defense, the Pentagon, has made public videos of its attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. This release follows conflicting reports regarding the extent of the damage inflicted. Some reports suggest significant disruption to Iran’s nuclear program, while others claim the impact was minimal, with Iran allegedly removing uranium from the targeted sites before the strikes.

During a Thursday news conference, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, provided a detailed account of the planning and execution of the US strikes. The released footage included visuals of bunker buster bombs impacting the Fordow nuclear site.

Gen. Caine presented the footage, showcasing the impact of the bunker buster bombs on the Fordow site. Secretary Hegseth disputed an earlier Defence Intelligence Agency report that suggested the strikes caused only limited damage. He strongly emphasized the severity of the attacks, using terms like “decimating,” “obliterating,” and “destroying” to underscore the level of destruction. Although the damage caused by the bunker-buster bomb was not clearly visible on the surface level. The footage showcased the different types of impacts that the bombs made.

Gen Caine stated that a bomb has three main effects: blast, fragmentation, and overpressure. He elaborated that overpressure and blast were the primary mechanisms of destruction in these strikes.

Reports from the US and Israel indicate that three Iranian nuclear sites experienced substantial damage. President Donald Trump asserted that the targeted locations were obliterated during the US Air Force attacks. Despite these claims, Iran has acknowledged the strikes but downplayed the extent of the damage.

The United States presented details of its strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities in a news conference. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Gen. Den Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, briefed on the planning and execution of the attack last week. A US official confirmed that 12 bunker-buster bombs were deployed. General Caine shared test footage of the strikes.

Hegseth disputed reports suggesting the strikes were ineffective, stating they obliterated the sites. The Pentagon showed videos demonstrating the bombs’ functionality. Gen. Caine explained that the bombs cause damage through blast, fragmentation, and overpressure.

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) confirmed that the strikes severely damaged Tehran’s key nuclear facilities. The CIA stated that it would take years to rebuild the destroyed structures. The CIA’s confirmation came amidst reports suggesting the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites caused minimal damage. Initial assessments from the Defence Intelligence Agency (DIA) suggested the attacks caused only temporary disruption, potentially setting Tehran’s nuclear program back by a few months. President Trump announced the media briefing to counter what the administration calls “misleading and premature reporting” by US media outlets.
