  • COVID-19 cases fall below 8,000 in country, lowest in 543 days

    NEW DELHI: India logged 7,579 new coronavirus infections, the lowest in 543 days, taking the country’s total tally of COVID-19 cases to 3,45,26,480, while the active cases were the lowest in 536 days, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

    The death toll climbed to 4,66,147 with 236 fresh fatalities, according to the data updated at 8 am.

    The daily rise in new coronavirus infections has been below 20,000 for 46 straight days and less than 50,000 daily new cases have been reported for 149 consecutive days now.

    The active cases declined to 1,13,584 and comprise 0.33 per cent of the total infections, the lowest since March 2020, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 98.32 per cent, the highest since March 2020, the ministry said.

    A decrease of 4,859 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours.

    India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 2020, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

    It went past 60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

    India crossed the grim milestone of two crore on May 4 and three crore on June 23.

  • India reports 30,570 COVID-19 cases, 431 deaths in last 24 hours

    NEW DELHI: With 30,570 more people testing positive for COVID-19, India’s overall infection tally has risen to 3,33,47,325, while the count of active cases has dipped to 3,42,923, according to the Union Health Ministry on Thursday.

    The death toll due to the disease has climbed to 4,43,928 with 431 daily fatalities being recorded, according to data updated by the ministry at 8 am.

    The number of active cases has dropped to 3,42,923, which comprises 1.03 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was recorded at 97.64 per cent, the ministry said.

    A reduction of 8,164 cases has been recorded in the active COVID-19 caseload in a span of 24 hours, the data showed.

    Also, 15,79,761 COVID-19 tests were conducted in the country on Wednesday, taking the total number of such examinations so far to 54,77,01,729, it stated.

    The daily positivity rate was recorded at 1.94 per cent. This has been below three per cent for 17 days.

    The weekly positivity rate was recorded at 1.93 per cent.

    This figure has been below three per cent for 83 days now, according to the health ministry.

    The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 3,25,60,474, while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.33 per cent.

    The cumulative number of COVID-19 vaccine doses administered in the country so far under the nationwide vaccination drive has exceeded 76.57 crore, according to the ministry.

  • COVID-19: India records 42,625 cases and 562 deaths in a day

    NEW DELHI: With 42,625 people testing positive for the coronavirus infection in a day, India’s total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 3,17,69,132 and the active caseload increased to 4,10,353, according to data updated by the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday.

    The death toll climbed to 4,25,757 with 562 fatalities.

    The number of active cases increased to 4,10,353 and accounted for 1.9 per cent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate rose to 97.37 per cent, the data updated at 8 am showed.

    An increase of 5,395 cases has been recorded in the active caseload in a span of 24 hours.

    As many as 18,47,518 samples were tested on Tuesday taking the number of tests conducted so far for detection of COVID-19 in the country to 47,31,42,307.

    The daily positivity rate stood at 2.31 per cent, while the weekly positivity rate was recorded at 2.36 per cent, according to the ministry.

    The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 3,09,33,022, while the case fatality rate stood at 1.34 per cent, according to the data.

    Cumulative vaccine doses administered in the country so far has reached 48.52 crore.

  • Covid vaccination drive sees 70 per cent decline as jab supply takes a hit in Uttarakhand

    Dehradun: The COVID-19 vaccination process in Uttarakhand suffered over 70 per cent decline in last four days with numbers dwindling from over 1 lakh per day to less than 30,000 people getting the jab in one day. 

    The data released by the state health department suggested steep fall in number of people getting vaccinated after Friday. 

    On Thursday, in total 718 sessions across the state, 1,07,658 people were vaccinated while on Friday number of sessions fell to 697 with 60,841 people getting vaccinated.

    On Saturday, the number of session came down to 519 with 45,684 people getting vaccine doses and the number of people getting vaccines went down to 26,719 with only 300 sessions across the state. 

    Meanwhile, the state got 1.38 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccine on Sunday, said health department officials. However, the state government has requested 10 lakh doses from the centre

    JC Pande, nodal officer, medical health and family welfare of Uttarakhand said, “Total 1.38 lakh does of Covishield vaccine have arrived and vaccination drive will go smooth in state from Monday. The vaccines have been already dispatched to all 13 districts.”

    The state is vaccinating over 1 lakh people everyday and officials said they have vaccines only for next three days now. Overall, 178 vaccination centers across the state had to stop the drive  due to unavailability of the doses. 

    Till dated, out of the total 11,24,056 vaccinated people, 18,1150 have been vaccinated with both the doses. 

    The hill state registered highest number of cases in one day this year with 1,333 new cases on Sunday.

    The weekly data indicates that Covid cases have reached 2020 levels with active cases reaching 7323 across the state.

    According to the data of week 56 (April 4-10), since the inception of Covid in Uttarakhand on March 15, 2020, the state conducted highest ever tests in one week- 239522. 

    Anoop Nautiyal, whose Social Development for Communities Foundation has been analysing the Covid data since March 2020 says, “The center, the state and the people need to take radical decisions in terms of behaviour, management and resourcesfuless. The center must ensure enough doses of vaccine, the states must check the spread and people must be adhere to Covid appropriate behaviour.”

  • COVID-19: Last warning, follow rules, Maharashtra CM Uddhav Thackeray tells hotels, restaurants

    MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday ordered hotels and restaurants in the state to ensure strict adherence to COVID-19 protocols in their premises and not force the state to enforce drastic measures like lockdown.

    Speaking at a virtual meeting attended by representatives of hotel and restaurant associations, shopping centre groups, the CM said a “lackadaisical” attitude towards outbreak norms had crept in lately.

    “Do not force us to impose a strict lockdown. Consider this as the last warning. Follow all the rules. Everyone has to realise there is a difference between self-discipline and restrictions,” Thackeray said.

    The CM pointed out that crowds had increased in most places since activities resumed in a phased manner from October, and safety rules were not being followed and this had resulted in a steep surge in cases.

    Incidentally, Maharashtra on Saturday recorded 15,602 COVID-19 cases and 88 deaths, taking the tally to 22,97,793 and the toll to 52,811.

    “Last week, a Central team visited Mumbai and one of the members told me no one was wearing masks or following social distancing at a hotel they visited. Initially, hotels, restaurants were adhering strictly to COVID-19 norms, but now everyone has become lackadaisical,” he said.

    He said his government was not in favour of a lockdown to tackle the latest surge and asked people to cooperate to avoid having to take such a drastic decision.

    Mumbai municipal commissioner IS Chahal suggested that the hotel and restaurant associations can organise flying squads to check if outbreak norms were being followed.

    These association said member establishments not adhering to rules will be removed, while shopping centre representatives said they could deploy “COVID marshals” to check people in malls, while entry into food courts will be restricted.

  • COVID-19: Maharashtra daily cases surge with over 14,000 new infections, 57 deaths

    The upswing in COVID-19 cases continues in Maharashtra as State added 14,317 new infections on Thursday making this the single-day highest record in 2021. 

    In the last 24 hours, 57 patients died and 7193 got discharged from the hospital.

    With this hike, the active cases in the state have reached 1,06,070 and the total cases stand at 22,66,374.

    The total recoveries are around 21,06,400 while the total death toll is at 52,667.

    Addressing the people, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said that people should take the vaccine.

    Even after vaccination, using the mask is a must, even hand washing, and these small things are important, he added.

    Thackeray, 60, received the first dose of the vaccine against COVID-19 at the government-run J J Hospital on Thursday. Speaking after taking the jab, he said, “Some areas of Maharashtra will witness strict lockdown measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus infection. The government is going to hold a special meeting with officials before coming out with the lockdown measures.”

    “We are very worried about Maharashtra,” said V K Paul, Member, Health, Niti Aayog, who also heads the national Covid-19 task force.

    Earlier in the day, Maharashtra Minister Nitin Raut announced that ‘strict lockdown’ will be enforced in Nagpur from March 15 to 21 in view of spike in COVID-19 cases here. 

    On October 7 2020, the state had reported 14,578 cases after which the number of daily cases had declined. However, since February 14 new cases have surged.

    Nagpur city recorded the highest 1,701 new cases, followed by 1,514 cases in Pune and 1,509 in Mumbai city.

    Mumbai division reported 2,856 new cases and 11 deaths, taking the cumulative caseload to 7,49,849 and death toll to 19,921.

    Nashik division’s case tally stood at 3,09,421 and death toll at 5,340.

    Kolhapur division has reported 1,20,744 cases and 4,082 deaths till now, while Aurangabad division’s case tally stood at 87,369 and death count at 2,081.

    With 97,778 tests carried out on Thursday, the state has so far tested 1,72,13,312 samples for coronavirus.

    There are 4,80,083 people in home quarantine while 4,719 are in institutional quarantine.

  • West Bengal reports 241 new COVID-19 cases, 2 fresh deaths

    KOLKATA: West Bengal’s COVID-19 tally rose to 5,77,267 as 241 more people tested positive for the infection while two fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 10,283, the health department said on Wednesday.

    The two deaths were due to the comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental, it said.

    The state now has 3,127 active COVID-19 cases, while 5,63,857 people have recovered from the disease.

    The COVID-19 recovery rate in the state is 97.68 per cent.

    The state has so far tested 87,48,775 samples for COVID-19 including 18,272 samples in the last 24 hours, it said.

    Meanwhile, 1,44,322 people received the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, the health department added.

  • India’s total active COVID cases reach 1,64,511; six states show surge in cases

    NEW DELHI: India’s total number of active COVID-19 cases has reached 1,64,511, which comprises 1.48 per cent of the country’s total infections, the Union Health Ministry said on Sunday highlighting six states that have shown a surge in new cases in a span of 24 hours.

    It said 86.37 per cent of the new cases are from Maharashtra, Kerala, Punjab, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat.

    A total of 16,752 new COVID-19 cases were registered in a span of 24 hours.

    Maharashtra continues to report the highest daily new cases at 8,623, followed by Kerala with 3,792 cases while Punjab reported 593 fresh COVID-19 cases.

    Eight states are displaying an upward trajectory in the daily new cases, the ministry said.

    “The Centre has been engaging with states and union territories exhibiting higher active number of cases and those reporting a spike in the daily new COVID-19 cases,” the ministry stated.

    The cabinet secretary chaired a high-level review meeting on Saturday with states and union territories exhibiting a surge in cases, including Telangana, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab, Jammu and Kashmir and West Bengal.

    The cabinet secretary reiterated that states need to maintain a continued rigorous vigil in terms of containing the spread and not squander away the gains of the collective hardwork of last year.

    They were advised not to lower their guard, enforce COVID-19 appropriate behaviour and deal firmly with violations.

    It was strongly underlined that they need to follow effective surveillance strategies in respect of potential super spreading events, the ministry said.

    Need for effective testing, comprehensive tracking, prompt isolation of positive cases and quick quarantine of close contacts were also strongly emphasised.

    The Centre has also deputed high-level multi-disciplinary teams to Kerala, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Jammu and Kashmir to ascertain the reasons for the surge and coordinate with the state health departments in COVID-19 control and containment measures.

    On the front of COVID vaccination, a total of 1,43,01,266 doses have been administered through 2,92,312 sessions, as per the provisional report till 7 am.

    These include 66,69,985 healthcare workers (first dose), 24,56,191 healthcare workers (second dose) and 51,75,090 frontline workers (first dose).

    India is all set to start the second phase of COVID-19 vaccination on March 1 for those who are over 60 years of age and for people aged 45 and above with specified co-morbid conditions.

    To ramp-up the COVID-19 vaccination capacity, around 10,000 private hospitals under the Ayushman Bharat-PMJAY and over 600 private hospitals under the central government health scheme will be utilised.

    Other private hospitals empanelled under state governments health insurance scheme can also participate as COVID-19 Vaccination Centres (CVCs).

    A total of 1.07 crore (1,07,75,169) people have recovered so far with 11,718 patients having recuperated in a span of 24 hours.

    The ministry said 84.19 per cent of the new recovered cases are observed to be concentrated in six states.

    Kerala has reported the maximum number of single-day recoveries with 4,650 newly-recovered cases.

    A total of 3,648 people recovered in Maharashtra in a span of 24 hours, followed by 491 in Tamil Nadu.

    Besides, 113 deaths due to COVID-19 were reported in a span of 24 hours.

    Six states account for 84.96 per cent of the new deaths.

    Maharashtra saw the maximum of 51 casualties.

    Kerala follows with 18 daily deaths and Punjab reported 11 deaths in a span of 24 hours.

    Nineteen states and union territories have not reported any COVID-19 deaths in the last 24 hours.

    These are Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Odisha, Goa, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, Assam, Lakshadweep, Manipur, Sikkim, Ladakh, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Arunachal Pradesh.

  • India reports 16,752 new COVID-19 cases, 113 deaths

    NEW DELHI: As many as 16,752 new COVID-19 cases and 113 deaths were reported in India during the last 24 hours, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) on Sunday.

    With this, the total coronavirus caseload in the country has gone up to 1,10,96,731, including 1,64,511 active cases and 1,07,75,169 discharges.

    The COVID-19 death toll reached 1,57,051 on Saturday with additional 113 deaths.

    As per the Health Ministry, a total of 1,43,01,266 people in the country have been vaccinated against the virus.

    The countrywide vaccination drive was rolled out on January 16, 2021. The vaccination of the frontline workers started on February 2.

    The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) informed today that the total number of samples has reached 21,62,31,106 as of Saturday, including 7,95,723 samples tested yesterday.

  • India records 16,488 new COVID-19 cases, 113 deaths

    NEW DELHI: India registered a single-day spike of over 16,000 COVID-19 cases for the third day in a row on Saturday, pushing the infection tally to 1,10,79,979, while the recoveries surged to 1,07,63,451, according to Union Health Ministry data.

    A total of 16,488 novel coronavirus cases were reported in a day, while the death toll rose to 1,56,938 with 113 new fatalities, showed the data updated at 8 am on Saturday.

    The active case count has further increased to 1,59,590, which comprises 1.44 per cent of the total infections, the data stated.

    The number of recoveries reached 1,07,63,451, which translates to a national COVID-19 recovery rate of 97.14 per cent and the case fatality rate stands at 1.42 per cent.

    A total of 16,577 new COVID-19 cases were reported in India on Friday, while 16,738 fresh infections were registered in the country on Thursday.

    The death toll from the pandemic stands at 52,041 in Maharashtra, 12,488 in Tamil Nadu, 12,320 in Karnataka, 10,906 in Delhi, 10,263 in West Bengal, 8,725 in Uttar Pradesh and 7,169 in Andhra Pradesh.

    For the first time, a coronavirus-linked death has been reported in Lakshadweep.

    The Health Ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths were caused due to comorbidities.

    “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR),” the ministry said on its website, adding state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.
