  • Able to do things which I was trying for a while: Chennai Super Kings all-rounder Shivam Dube

    By PTI

NAVI MUMBAI: The 2022 edition could well be a breakthrough season for all-rounder Shivam Dube, who feels he is finally able to translate his domestic form into the IPL.

The Chennai Super Kings all-rounder paved the way for his team’s first win of the season with an unbeaten 95 against RCB on Tuesday night.

“I am able to do things, which I was trying for a while. The things I was doing in Ranji Trophy, at the domestic level, but after coming to this (IPL) level, you have to come one level up.

“So, I was trying to keep the balance, not think much and back myself. I am following my basic game, not doing anything extra. But yes there is one thing, my confidence is high and I am playing well,” Dube said at the post-match press conference.

The lanky left-handed batter also maintained that he has been backing his game.

Dube has been an aggressive batter on the domestic circuit but has not been able to replicate that form at the IPL and international level.

He has played 13 T20s and an ODI for India with his last appearance coming back in February 2020.

“(The team management) has given security and at the same time I back my game. I feel the ball which I can hit, I do that and I am able to connect well, so my confidence is high. I’m trying to play my own game,” said the Mumbai batter, who recorded his highest score in the IPL.

Dube and Uthappa shared a 165-run stand – the highest for the third wicket in the history of IPL.

The 28-year-old said they had decided to attack the RCB bowlers after a slow start.

“We didn’t speak much. The bowlers whom we thought we could attack, sometimes I was hitting, and sometimes he (Uthappa) was hitting.

“The ball was gripping in the beginning, but we thought we would attack, but it was difficult in the start, the new ball was gripping, but we backed ourselves and the game turned out this way,” he added.

Dube signed off by dedicating his first player of the match award of the IPL to his father, saying “this is for my dad.”

  • Get back to basics, look yourself in the mirror to find winning ways: Michael Hussey to CSK players

    By IANS

MUMBAI: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batting coach Michael Hussey has asked his players to go back to the basics to find the winning formula in this edition of the Indian Premier League.

CSK, under new skipper Ravindra Jadeja, have lost all four matches so far in the tournament this year, and take on an in-form Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the ‘Southern Derby’ at DY Patil Stadium here later on Tuesday.

The Australian added that every player in the side would have, by now, done some introspection to find the cause for individual disappointments.

“Without doubt, I am still really confident with the team, and the guys are working hard. I don’t think we are too far away hopefully (from the win), and as you say we can get hopefully one win on the board, then hopefully things can sort of grow from there,” Hussey told CSK TV on Tuesday.

“But I think we have just got to bring it right back to the basics you know, we cannot get too worried about what happened in the past and we cannot get worried about winning two or three games in a row in the future. We have just got to bring it down to playing this next game against RCB, focusing on our jobs, our individual skills, playing each ball like it is a contest, and win one contest after the next, and I am sure if we can do that, then if we can win more contests than RCB, then hopefully we can get a win on the board and hopefully get things going a little bit.

“I think the guys individually would have all gone away and had a good look at themselves in the mirror and just maybe identified one or two things that they can probably do a little bit better and hopefully they can bring that to the table and if everyone brings a little bit better, then hopefully the collective will improve and as you say, we can get that first win on the board.”

The former Australian batter, who was a CSK player before becoming batting coach of the side, praised left-arm pacer Mukesh Choudhary, saying the Super Kings like what he brings to the table.

“You have got to remember, he (Mukesh Chowdhury) is still a young guy, he is playing his first couple of games in the IPL, it is a big, big deal for a young inexperienced player. So, we just try and support him as much as we possibly can, you see his confidence growing, each game that he plays. So, I am really confident that there is a really big performance from him just around the corner, and yeah I just love watching him grow and improve with each game. So, yeah really like what he is bringing to the table.”

  • Back injury rules CSK all-rounder Deepak Chahar out of IPL

    By PTI

MUMBAI: A back injury to Deepak Chahar has all but put paid to the pace bowling all-rounder’s hopes of playing in the ongoing IPL-15, adding to the woes of Chennai Super Kings’ faltering campaign.

Having entered the tournament without Chahar, their strike bowler, the defending champions have lost all their four matches so far in the 10-team competition and are placed at the bottom of the points table.

While CSK have always claimed that their Rs 14 crore buy would be fit before the second week of April, the seriousness of the tear was such that there was “no chance of his availability” in the tournament.

According to sources, the India and CSK bowler suffered the back injury during his rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru.

Chahar has been at the NCA for more than a month now, recovering from the quadricep tear he picked during India’s T20I series against West Indies in February.

Initially it was believed that Chahar would miss a major part of the IPL, but his quick recovery kept CSK optimistic of a late April return.

The bowling all-rounder had suffered a quadriceps injury during the third T20I against West Indies in February, walking off the field after failing to complete his spell.

The 29-year-old, who was bought for Rs 14 crore in the mega auction, went on to miss the ensuing series against Sri Lanka.

Chahar, who is also adept at playing the big shots, played a key role in the team’s success last year.

  • Southern derby set to liven up IPL with Virat Kohli and MS Dhoni on opposing sides

    By IANS

MUMBAI: It is going to be a clash of the heavyweights when the in-form Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) take on the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the southern derby at the DY Patil Stadium here later on Tuesday.

An IPL clash with two former India captains in the opposing sides is a delight for the fans, but if those two happen to be the iconic Virat Kohli and Mahendra Singh Dhoni, the contest takes an altogether different meaning.

Both sides have so far had contrasting fortunes in this edition of the IPL. While RCB have been flying high on the back of superb performances from their batters as well as bowlers and are currently third on the points table after three wins in four outings, the Ravindra Jadeja-led CSK are scraping the bottom of the table after four consecutive losses.

The Faf du Plessis-led RCB will be coming into the contest on the back of fine form as they ran riot against an off-colour Mumbai Indians with an all-round display, with budding opener Anuj Rawat smashing a coming-of-age knock and the seasoned Kohli steering the team to the finishing line with a controlled 48.

The bowlers too were spot on as they restricted Mumbai Indians in the first 15 overs.

Four-time IPL champions CSK, on the other hand, have struggled badly, with barely anything to show for their efforts as they have slumped to four straight losses, the worst start ever for the side. This clash will be of symbolic importance to CSK as another loss can deal a massive blow to their already dampened spirits.

RCB skipper Faf du Plessis will come up against the batting prowess of Moeen Ali in another interesting clash to watch out for. The former South African captain got off to a fine start as he blasted 88 in the season opener. However, since then he has been relatively quiet going by the high standards. But on his day, du Plessis can almost single-handedly change the course of the game. Moeen too is a dynamic striker of the ball and can roll his wrists as well for good measure. He was also instrumental in CSK winning the IPL last season.

The venue is likely to favour the bowlers slightly, with a minimal presence of green that has made the ball drift in the early overs. However, a match aggregate of 400-plus runs cannot be ruled out. Teams chasing will always have the upper hand considering the dew factor and the fact that 10 T20 games out of the 13 played here have been won by the chasers.
