  • IPL 2024: MS Dhoni Takes Hardik Pandya To The Cleaners, Smashes 3 Sixes In A Row During IPL ElClasico – WATCH | cricket news

When MS Dhoni stepped up to the crease during the IPL ElClasico, he smashed three consecutive sixes in the last over of the innings. It was the perfect finish. MI skipper Hardik Pandya was bowling the last over and unarguably he was taken to the cleaners by the former CSK captain. Crowd at Wankhede went crazy as MS Dhoni smashed 20 off 4 balls.

Brilliant half-centuries by Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube and a ‘Mahi Special’ hat-trick of sixes by MS Dhoni in the final over took Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to 206/4 in their Indian Premier League (IPL) match against Mumbai. Indians (MI) at Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

MI need to score 207 runs to secure their third successive win and continue their superior record over CSK in the IPL. After being put to bat first by MI, CSK was off to a bad start as they lost Ajinkya Rahane early for just five runs off eight balls. Gerald Coetzee got the wicket and Hardik Pandya took a fine catch at mid-on. CSK was 8/1 in 1.4 overs.

Rachin Ravindra was joined by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad. The duo took a little time to settle in, but it was not too late until Gaikwad let his hands loose by smashing Coetzee for two fours and a six in the fifth over. The sixth and final over of the powerplay by Akash Madhwal gave away 10 runs, including two fours. CSK was 48/1 after six overs, with Gaikwad (29*) and Rachin (12*) unbeaten.

Just when it seemed that Rachin was picking up speed and momentum, he was caught behind by Ishan Kishan on a Shreyas Gopal delivery for 21 in 16 balls, with two fours and a six. CSK was 60/2 in 7.5 overs. Shivam Dube came in at number four, hoping to carry on with his explosive run of form and six-hitting.

The 10th over by Hardik leaked 15 runs, including three majestic fours by Shivam. CSK ended the first half of their innings at 80/2, with Gaikwad (36*) and Dube (15*) unbeaten. Dube continued with his aggression, hitting Romario Shepherd for two fours. Gaikwad ended Akash Madhwal’s 12th over with a six to help the Men in Yellow touch 100-run mark.

Gaikwad reached his second IPL half-century in 33 balls, with three fours and four sixes. The 14th over by Romario was what CSK needed as Dube hit two sixes over deep backward square leg and long-on and then powered a pull shot through mid-wicket for a four.

After a single, Gaikwad produced a classy boundary in the backward point region, securing 22 runs from the over. The score reached 132 runs. CSK continued hitting big in the next over as well, as two fours and a six-over deep point by Shivam took the team 17 runs ahead. Dube reached his second IPL 2024 fifty in 28 balls, with seven fours and two sixes. Also, CSK reached the 150-run mark in 15.1 overs.

On the very next ball, though, skipper Pandya ended the 90-run partnership as Mohammed Nabi caught Gaikwad at long-on, ending his knock at 69 runs in 40 balls, with five fours and five sixes. CSK was 150/3 in 15.2 overs.

Daryl Mitchell joined Dube at the other end. The run flow was restricted considerably after Gaikwad’s dismissal. Mitchell’s struggling knock of 17 in 14 balls was ended by Pandya, who got him caught by Nabi near the boundary. CSK was 186/4 in 19.2 overs.

MS Dhoni walked in and made an immediate impact with three successive sixes, one over long-on, the other over long-off and the third over square leg. 200 was up for CSK in 19.5 overs.

Dhoni took a double on the final ball, CSK ended at 206/4, with Dhoni (20* in four balls) and Dube (66* in 38 balls, with 10 fours and two sixes) unbeaten. Pandya (2/43) was the pick of the bowlers for MI. Gopal and Coetzee got a wicket each.

  • Mumbai Indians pacer Jaydev Unadkat stresses on ‘collective effort’ from bowling unit ahead of CSK clash

    By PTI

NAVI MUMBAI: Desperate to snap their losing streak, Mumbai Indians pacer Jaydev Unadkat on Wednesday said all they need is a “collective effort” from the bowlers when they take on Chennai Super Kings in an IPL game here on Thursday.

Mumbai Indians are enduring a winless season, having lost all six matches so far.

Their attack led by Jasprit Bumrah, has been taken to the cleaners by the opposition batters.

Unadkat himself, Basil Thampi and Murugan Ashwin have all leaked runs in abundance.

“There has to be a collective effort and that is what we are looking for. The couple of things that I am saying that we can rectify are those things, putting in a collective effort,” Unadkat said at the pre-match virtual press conference.

“You could have seen some special overs from some of our bowlers in the past but then we are not really putting it all together as a unit. So the discussions are how to do it as a team, how to do it as a bowling unit.

“Discussions for death overs or power-play remains the same, we got to do it as a collective unit and that is one thing we are aiming for and hopefully we will get it right in the next game,” added the left-arm pacer.

Mumbai need to win all remaining eight matches to remain in the race for the play-offs but Unadkat said they weren’t looking too far ahead.

“First of all see, at the moment there is no point in looking (at the) bigger picture.

The state we are in, we are just looking to put some things right, the missing pieces right first and just get off the mark,” he said.

“Once we do that, the other things follow.

For now, rather than looking at the bigger picture, looking at (we have) to win eight out of eight (games), it is about winning that one game, how we are going to do a couple of things differently maybe from what we did in a last few games, where we were close but not over the line.

“So maybe just rectify those things first, just think about getting those two points for us and then take things forward from there,” he signed off.

  • Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dwayne Bravo got us more than what we expected: CSK skipper MS Dhoni

    By PTI

DUBAI: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni said Ruturaj Gaikwad and Dwayne Bravo “got us more than what we expected” after his team was reeling at 24 for four at one stage of its IPL match against Mumbai Indians here on Sunday.

Gaikwad stroked his way to an unbeaten 88 while veteran Bravo, batting at number eight, smashed 23 off just 8 balls as CSK made 156 for six after opting to bat first.

The total proved to be more than enough as CSK beat MI by 20 runs.

“At 30 for 4, you want to put up a respectable score, I felt Rutu and Bravo got us more than what we expected. We thought of 140, to get close to 160 was tremendous,” Dhoni said at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“Rayudu got injured, so it was tough to come back from there but we batted sensibly and finished superbly. It was sensible for one batter to bat right through to the end.”

Talking about the wicket, Dhoni said, “The wicket was two-paced, slightly slow to start off. Also it’s difficult if you’re batting lower down, if you don’t get a chance to see what is happening, you want to go hard.”

Dhoni also said that Ambati Rayudu, who retired hurt after getting hit while batting, should be fine by the next match.

Gaikwad was declared the Player of the Match and he said it was one of his better knocks.

“Obviously one of my top innings until now, given the pressure we were in. I had to grind it out, bat till 10-12 overs, give myself time and push for 120-130, and then slowly 140-150 was possible. It was a matter of spending time in the middle,” he said.

“Mahi bhai, everyone in the CSK management, once they back you, they don’t make you think anything but positive things. The Sri Lanka tour and preparation coming here helped a lot.”

MI’s stand-in captain Kieron Pollard was also all praise for Gaikwad.

“Ruturaj batted really well. In T20 cricket, if one person bats through he can hurt you. We didn’t finish off well with the ball. Losing by 20 runs you know those were the extra runs we conceded,” he said.

He did not find any fault with the pitch but blamed poor batting for the defeat.

“The surface was good, new ball had movement, our seamers got early wickets. Their batters tried to continue the momentum throughout, we didn’t do that.”

“Even though they got 150-plus, as a batting team we could have gotten that. Losing three wickets was a cardinal sin for us. Given the circumstances, Saurabh (Tiwary, 50 not out) batted really well,” he said.

  • IPL 2021 CKS vs MI: Chennai beats Mumbai by 20 runs

    Express News Service

If there were some old wounds for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) to overcome from their sojourn in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) last year, there was no better way to do so than registering victory against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians to mark the resumption of IPL 2021.

The leading protagonist of Chennai’s 20-run win on Sunday was Ruturaj Gaikwad, whose unbeaten 88 set the platform for a turnaround after a shaky beginning to the night. The Chennai bowlers then played their part, with Deepak Chahar, in particular, showing his effectiveness with tidy figures of 4-0-19-2.

The only note of concern will be that Chahar had to walk off the field after 18 overs owing to possible cramps. Opting to bat first, the Men in Yellow had to endure a horror start as they were reduced to 24/4 after six overs with Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni back in the dugout. It was effectively 24/5 with a blow on the elbow also forcing Ambati Rayudu to retire hurt. While they had no retort when faced with such situations last year, the fact that they were able to bounce back on Sunday should hold them in good stead going forward.

They now have six wins in eight games and just need two more victories from their remaining six league games to confirm a berth in the play-offs. Mumbai Indians, who were without Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya for this game, should not be unduly worried either.

The opening exchanges in Dubai on Sunday were identical to Chennai’s 10-wicket thrashing at the hands of Mumbai last year, when they were reduced to 30/6 and 43/7 at one stage before recovering to a total of 114/9. Unlike last year though, when Gaikwad was out for 0 to precipitate the collapse, the 24-year-old from Pune steadied the ship before launching into a timely assault in the second half of the innings. He batted through the 20 overs and returned unbeaten on 88 off 58 balls, helping Chennai to a total of 156-6. Chennai’s fightback with the bat began with a partnership of 81 off 64 balls between Gaikwad and Ravindra Jadeja. They allowed a few quiet overs to pass at the start of their alliance before flicking a switch in the 12th over.

With Krunal Pandya not being a big turner of the ball, they decided to take their chances and took 18 runs off the over. Gaikwad stepped out to hit a six straight down the ground before hitting another boundary with a cheeky reverse sweep to end the over. That seemed to set Gaikwad on his way, as the opening batsman exhibited his delightful timing to keep the CSK dugout in good spirits. He didn’t spare Bumrah either, managing to second-guess the ace death bowler’s intentions on a couple of occasions to send the ball soaring beyond the boundary hoardings.

The trademark insouciance of Dwayne Bravo was the icing on the cake towards the end as the all-rounder joined in on the act with a 8-ball 23, dealing harshly with the left-arm pace of Boult in the 19th over that went for 24 runs. The opener must be chuffed at having begun well in the UAE after the tumultuous campaign that he had to endure last year.

Infected by Covid before the tournament, he had a trial by fire at the start of the tournament with a string of low scores resulting in him being dropped from the side. He got another look-in only when Chennai’s chances of qualifying for the play-offs had all but ended, but then capitalised on those opportunities. He is now far more assured and comfortable in his own skin, with his debut for India in the T20I format a couple of months ago a testament to his progress.

  • Ruturaj Gaikwad’s 88 lifts Chennai Super Kings to 156/6 against Mumbai Indians

    By PTI

DUBAI: The supremely-talented Ruturaj Gaikwad batted through the innings for an unbeaten 58-ball 88 to lift Chennai Super Kings from 7/3 to 156 for six against Mumbai Indians as the IPL-14 resumed here on Sunday.

The late spark was provided by Dwayne Bravo (23 off 8 balls) as CSK recovered from a disastrous start to put up a fighting total.

The 24-year-old Gaikwad added 81 runs for the fifth wicket with Ravindra Jadeja (26) to steady the ship after they lost skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni in the sixth over and the score was 24 for 4.

Gaikwad smashed nine fours and three sixes, while Bravo hit three maximums.

CSK lost four wickets in the power play, including the wickets of skipper Dhoni and the team’s seasoned run-getter Suresh Raina, as three top-order batsmen failed to open their account.

The start was inauspicious for CSK as Trent Boult dismissed Faf du Plessis in the fifth ball of the very first over when the New Zealand pace spearhead had the veteran South African caught by the backward point fielder Adam Milne, who was standing very fine, after the batsman had shaped himself up to play the cut shot.

One for one became two for two in the next over as Milne got Moeen Ali who slapped a slightly short ball straight to Saurabh Tiwary at cover.

What didn’t help Moeen was that the ball seemed to stop as the England all-rounder went for his shot.

More trouble was in store for CSK as the three-time winners lost the big wicket of Raina in the third over when the experienced left-handed batsman, who has helped the team win so many matches in the past, got out to an irresponsible shot when he miscued one while trying to attack the Kiwi seamer.

Meanwhile, Ambati Rayudu retired hurt after taking a blow on his body to make matter worse for the Super Kings.

If that was not enough, holders Mumbai Indians piled more misery on CSK by sending the veteran Dhoni back to the hut for a poor score.

The World Cup-winning Indian captain timed his shot well but, to his shock, Boult completed a well-judged catch at deep square leg, capping a forgettable powerplay for the unit from Chennai.

After that, Gaikwad and Jadeja put together invaluable runs by mixing caution with aggression to give their team a total to defend against a side that is missing two of their big players in regular skipper Rohit Sharma and all-rounder Hardik Pandya, whose seam-up bowling was missed when the Chennai duo was rebuilding their innings.

  • CSK skipper MS Dhoni wins toss, elects to bat against Mumbai Indians

    By PTI

DUBAI: Chennai Super Kings skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni won the toss and opted to bat against defending champions Mumbai Indians, who are being led by Kieron Pollard in the absence of regular skipper Rohit Sharma, as IPL action resumed here on Sunday.

The IPL-14 was postponed after the coronavirus breached its bio-bubble in May.

Dashing all-rounder Hardik Pandya is also missing the game for MI, making the way for Anmolpreet Singh’s debut.

On Rohit’s absence, Pollard said, “He is okay, we will see him sooner rather than later. He is the captain of this ship. I am just standing in.”

For CSK, Faf du Plessis, Moeen Ali, Dwayne Bravo and Josh Hazlewood are the four foreigners playing in the match.

    Teams:

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (C), Faf du Plessis, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Moeen Ali, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Ravindra Jadeja, Dwayne Bravo, Shardul Thakur, Deepak Chahar, Josh Hazlewood
