Maruti Suzuki, a leading car manufacturer in India, is set to introduce a hybrid version of its popular Fronx model, signaling a strategic shift towards hybrid technology. Reports indicate that the company has begun testing the hybrid variant of the Fronx, with sightings during testing in the country. This suggests an imminent launch by Maruti Suzuki.

Notably, the test model included LIDAR sensors, hinting at the possibility of the hybrid Fronx featuring an ADAS system, potentially with Level-2 ADAS. The introduction of Level-2 ADAS in the upcoming Fronx would follow the e-Vitara, the first Maruti car to incorporate this safety feature, indicating a trend of enhancing safety features across other models.

The prototype, observed during testing, resembles the existing petrol version, with the primary distinction being a hybrid badge at the rear. This hybrid variant is based on the Maruti Suzuki Baleno crossover, slated to be sold through the Nexa showroom network.

The forthcoming Maruti Suzuki Fronx hybrid is expected to be equipped with a new Super 48V hybrid system. This system will combine an electric motor with either a new 1.0-liter or a 1.5-liter turbo petrol engine. The design and other features are expected to remain largely unchanged, but with added Level-2 ADAS features alongside existing safety features.

Specific details on power, torque, and mileage (fuel efficiency) have yet to be released by the company. The launch timeline remains undisclosed, though the uncovered appearance of the car during testing suggests it might launch within the current year. The Fronx has quickly become the fastest-exported crossover from India, achieving a milestone of 100,000 units exported within 25 months since June 2023. The hybrid version is also likely to be exported to major international markets.

If you’re in the market for a new hatchback under Rs 10 Lakh, now might be a good time to pause. While immediate needs should be addressed, those who can wait a few months could have more options. Several new vehicles, including facelifts and hatchbacks, are slated to launch soon.

Maruti Suzuki plans to introduce a hybrid version of the Fronx. This could be an appealing alternative to the CNG versions of the Baleno, Fronx, and Swift. Hyundai is also planning new launches, including a compact crossover hybrid model, internally codenamed BC4i (Bayon). It will be powered by a new 1.2-liter Kappa engine, which will serve as a foundation for Hyundai’s hybrid portfolio in India. This engine aims to bridge the gap between the 1.0-liter and 1.5-liter turbo petrol engines.

Maruti Suzuki is also planning a new 5-seater SUV, possibly called the Escudo. Positioned between the Vitara Brezza and Grand Vitara, it will compete with the Kia Seltos and Hyundai Creta. It’s designed for buyers wanting a more luxurious SUV than the Vitara Brezza at a lower price than the Grand Vitara. It may feature the existing 1.5cc, four-cylinder engine with hybrid enhancements.

Renault India is working on revamping its lineup. Currently selling the Kwid, Triber, and Kiger, the brand is set to introduce a new Duster and an EV hatchback. The Kwid EV has been spotted testing, and the new model resembles the Dacia Spring EV sold in global markets.

The Suzuki Fronx, a crossover variant of the Baleno hatchback, has been introduced with advanced Level 2 ADAS capabilities. The India-made Fronx is already sold in over 70 countries, including markets in Africa and Latin America. Recently, the Fronx underwent testing by Japan NCAP, achieving a four-star safety rating with an overall score of 163.75 out of 193.8 points. The car also scored 76.33 out of 100 points in the test. The Indian version’s safety is expected to improve with the integration of ADAS features, which are currently available in the Indonesian model. The Indonesian Fronx is powered by a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol engine. The K15B petrol engine has multiple transmission choices, while the 1.5-liter K15C engine is paired with either a five-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed automatic transmission.
