  • Elderly man gets 20 years rigorous imprisonment for raping girl in Arunachal Pradesh

    ITANAGAR: A special POCSO court at Khonsa in Arunachal Pradesh’s Tirap district on Thursday sentenced a 62-year-old man to 20 years in prison for raping a nine-year-old girl in an inebriated condition.

    The court of special judge Justice H Kashyap also slapped a fine on Unilye Chakma alias Anil Kumar Chakma.

    The court also referred the matter to the District Legal Services Authority at Changlang for providing adequate compensation to the survivor under the Arunachal Pradesh Victim Compensation Scheme.

    The incident had taken place on July 25 last year when the girl had gone to a shop to buy some biscuits.

    Chakma, who was in an inebriated condition, had dragged her into a nearby bamboo grove, and raped her.

    A passerby noticed the incident and informed the girl’s mother, who lodged an FIR with Diyun police station.

    Chakma was nabbed and chargesheet filed upon completion of investigation.

  • Elderly chartered accountant held for raping 24-year-old assistant in Gujarat’s Vadodara

    AHMEDABAD: A 24-year-old woman was allegedly raped by an elderly chartered accountant, who had hired her as his assistant in Gujarat’s Vadodara city, police said on Thursday.

    The Vadodara city crime branch arrested the 69-year-old accused from his hideout in Palitana town of Bhavnagar district in the early hours of the day, said D S Chauhan, assistant commissioner of police, Crime.

    “The accused went into hiding after the victim, who is a law student, lodged a complaint of rape against him and his friend.

    Based on a tip-off, we nabbed the accused from Palitana and brought him to Vadodara,” Chauhan said.

    The police had apprehended the accused man’s friend from Junagadh a week ago, and he was sent to jail after the end of his three-day remand, he said.

    In a complaint lodged at Gotri police station on September 19, the woman has alleged that her employer had spiked her soft drink and raped her at a place in Vadodara on the pretext of discussing some official work.

    The victim further claimed that the accused had warned her against disclosing anything about the assault, he said.

    A few days later, the accused’s 60-year-old friend allegedly visited the victim’s rented place and forced himself on her, the official added.

  • 42-year-old man held for repeatedly raping his 6-year-old niece in Maharashtra

    THANE: Police have arrested a man from Ulhasnagar town in Maharashtra’s Thane district for allegedly raping his six-year-old niece on multiple occasions, an official said on Saturday.

    The 42-year-old accused was arrested on Friday, the official of Hill Line police station said.

    “The accused lived in the neighbourhood of his niece’s family. The accused used to take her to his house on the pretext of playing with her. However, he would sexually assault her there. A couple of days back, the girl’s elder brother spotted the accused indulging in sexual acts with her. The boy reported the matter to his parents, who approached the police and lodged a complaint against the man,” he said.

    A medical test was conducted on the girl, which confirmed that she had been raped, police said.

    After that, the accused was arrested and booked under IPC section 376 (rape) and also under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

    He was produced before a local court, which remanded him in police custody for four days, they said.

  • Man sent to 14-day judicial custody for raping minor daughter in Kota

    KOTA: A local court here sent 30-year-old man to 14-day judicial custody for repeatedly raping his seven-year-old daughter for the last 20 days in their house in Rajasthan’s Kota district.

    He was sent to jail on Wednesday night after his arrest a day earlier, police said.

    Following the incident, the minor girl narrated her ordeal to her mother, a daily wage labourer, who went to the SP office at Baran on August 2 and lodged a complaint, they said.

    Superintendent of Police, Baran, Vineet Bansal immediately ordered local Mahila station police to register a zero FIR in the matter and sent an assistant sub-inspector to lodge a case in Deoli-Manji police station, where a case against the accused under various sections of the IPC and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act was registered, police said.

    The girl has been sent for medical examination, they said.

    Taking a serious note in the matter, a special team, led by Station House Office Deoli-Manji police station Ramavtar Sharma, arrested the accused from the forests of the Kalisindh river near Rupaheda village, Superintendent of Police, Kota Rural, Sharad Choudhary said.

    Police produced the accused before a local court here on Wednesday evening and he was sent to 14-day judicial custody, he said.

    The accused, a native of Baran district, had been working and living in a rented accommodation in Deoli-Manji town of Kota district with his wife and three children, SHO at Deoli–Manji police station Ramavtar Sharma said.

    The statements of the minor girl were recorded under section 164 before a magistrate and further investigation into the matter is underway, the SHO said.

    A separate case lodged against the accused under section 302, 302 and 120 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in Kelwada police station in 2017 is already pending in the court, he said.

  • Two minor girls from Uttar Pradesh taken to Hyderabad, raped

    BALLIA: Two minor girls from Uttar Pradesh were allegedly kidnapped and taken to Hyderabad where they were raped, police said on Thursday.

    The girls, aged 12 and 16, are friends and belong to a village under Narhi police station area, Sub-Inspector Dharmendra Singh said.

    Two days after they were abducted on June 14, the father of one of the girls lodged a kidnapping case.

    And, on Wednesday, the girls were found at the Bharauli intersection here, he said.

    The victims told the police that one Deepak of their village had abducted them along with his friend Sonu, a resident of a neighbouring village.

    The girls said they were taken to Hyderabad and raped.

    On the basis of the statements of the girls, IPC section 366 (kidnapping, abducting or inducing a woman to compel her for marriage) and section 376 (rape) and sections of the POCSO Act have been registered against the accused, Singh said.

    He added that the girls have been sent for medical examination and efforts are on to arrest the accused.

    NEW DELHI: Hitting out at the BJP government in Uttar Pradesh over the issue of crime against women, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Wednesday said that in “‘jungle raj’ women’s safety is in God’s hands”.

    The Congress general secretary alleged that such crimes are being committed against women in Uttar Pradesh which would make “one’s soul tremble”, but the government is “sleeping”.

    “In Mathura, goons who had been harassing a girl for a year entered her house and threw her from the terrace.

    A girl, troubled over being teased, ended her own life in Hamirpur,” she said in a tweet in Hindi.

    “In jungle raj, the safety of women is in God’s hands,” Priyanka Gandhi added.

    Her attack on the government came after three men barged into the house of a 17-year-old girl on Tuesday and allegedly threw her off the second floor of the building.

    The girl is battling for life in a hospital.

    The district police has lodged an FIR in the case and arrested two of the three accused.

  • 50-year-old woman gang-raped, murdered in UP’s Badaun; priest among three booked

    BUDAUN: A 50-year-old woman was gang-raped and brutally murdered allegedly by a priest and two others in Badaun district in Uttar Pradesh, police said on Wednesday.

    The attack on the woman took place on Sunday when she had gone to a temple, they said, adding that all three accused have been booked, and two of them arrested on Tuesday.

    Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sankalp Sharma said “the post-mortem report confirms rape, and there are injuries in her private parts and a fracture in the leg”.

    He added that the station house officer of Ughaiti police station has been suspended for laxity in the case.

    “On Sunday, the 50-year-old woman, who had gone to a temple, was found dead under mysterious circumstances. Family members of the woman have accused the temple mahant and his aides of raping and murdering her. Based on this, a case was registered against the accused. Two of the accused persons were arrested on Tuesday night, while the mahant is still absconding,” he said.

    Four teams have been formed to nab the priest, the SSP said.
