  • 148 students in four Jharkhand schools test positive for COVID-19

    JAMSHEDPUR: One-hundred and forty-eight students in four girls’ residential schools in Jharkhand’s East Singhbhum district have tested positive for COVID-19, an official said on Wednesday.

    Deputy Commissioner Vijaya Jadhav on Tuesday directed to carry out COVID-19 test in all Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) schools in the district after 69 students tested positive for the virus on Monday, the official said.

    Led by Civil Surgeon Dr Jujhar Majhi doctors carried out COVID-19 testing in three other KGBV schools in Dumaria, Potka and Jamshedpur blocks of the district and detected 79 more students inflicted with the virus.

    While KGBV Dumaria recorded for 14 cases, KGBV Potka 10 and KGBV Jamshedpur 55 COVID-19, an official statement said.

    All the students were isolated as per Coronavirus protocol and the school premises were completely sanitised.

    On the directive of Jadhav, the Civil Surgeon had a virtual meeting with the wardens, teaching and non-teaching staff of all KGBVs and ordered them to implement COVID-19 guidelines.

    The deputy commissioner also directed health officials to conduct COVID-19 tests in railway stations, bus stands, schools and colleges to contain the spread of the virus in view of increasing coronavirus cases.

  • Elton John tests positive for COVID-19

    WASHINGTON: Music icon Elton John on Tuesday revealed that he has tested positive for COVID-19.

    The 74-year-old singer took to his Instagram stories to reveal the news and noted that he had postponed two planned shows in Texas.

    “Hi everyone, wanted to send a message to let you know that I have contracted COVID and so have had to reschedule my shows in Dallas. If you have tickets, you’ll be contacted with the new dates really soon,” John wrote.

    “It’s always a massive disappointment to move shows and I’m so sorry to anyone who’s inconvenienced by this but I want to keep myself and my team safe,” he continued in his statement.

    The legendary singer had been due to perform at the American Airlines Center on Tuesday and Wednesday as part of his Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour. New dates have yet to be announced by the singer and his team.

    The ‘Cold Heart’ artist also noted that he is fully vaccinated and boosted against COVID-19 and is only experiencing mild symptoms.

    He also added that he expects to be able to make the shows in Little Rock, Arkansas this weekend. At the end of his message, he thanked his fans for all their love and support said that he can’t wait to see them soon. 

  • Miss World 2021 postponed; Manasi Varanasi and others test positive for COVID-19

    The Miss World 2021 pageant finale has been “temporarily postponed” after several contestants, including India’s Manasa Varanasi, tested positive for coronavirus, according to organisers.

    The organisers posted a statement on the official social media pages of Miss World and said the finale, which was scheduled to be at Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on Thursday (December 16), will now take place after 90 days.

    “After meeting with the virologists and medical experts hired to oversee the Miss World 2021 event and discussing with the Puerto Rico Health Department, the decision has been made by the organizers of the event to postpone the globally broadcast finale at the Puerto Rico Coliseum Jose Miguel Agrelot to be held within the next 90 days.

    “As of yesterday, additional safety measures were implemented in the best interest of the contestants, production team and spectators, understanding the event increased risks on the stage and in the dressing room,” the statement read.

    The organisers said after additional positive cases were confirmed, they took the decision to postpone the event in consultations with health officials and experts.

    “The next step according to the medical experts is immediate quarantine, pending observation and further testing according to best practices in situations like this.”

    “Once and only when contestants and staff are cleared by health officials and advisors, will contestants and related staff return to their home countries,” it added.

    In a separate post on Instagram, Femina Miss India said Varanasi is among the contestants who have tested positive for coronavirus in Puerto Rico.

    “We were in great disbelief that she (Manasa Varanasi) might not be able to grace the world stage inspite of her immense hard work and dedication, however, her safety is of utmost importance to us,” Miss India Organisation said on their official Instagram page.

    “We can’t wait to welcome Manasa back home, nurture her back to health and send her back stronger, healthier and happier,” it added.

    Julia Morley, CEO of Miss World Ltd, said, “We are very much looking forward to the return of our contestants, (who we have grown to know and love), to compete for the Miss World crown.”

    “Puerto Rico offers a safe environment and a spectacular backdrop for filming the Miss World Festival!” she added.

  • SRH bowler T Natarajan tests positive, match against DC to go ahead as scheduled

    DUBAI: Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer T Natarajan has tested positive for COVID-19 but the team’s IPL match against Delhi Capitals on Wednesday will go ahead as scheduled, the BCCI said.

    Left-arm pacer Natarajan, who is coming back from knee surgery, has been isolated along with six close contacts which also include out of favour India all-rounder Vijay Shankar.

    “Sunrisers Hyderabad player T Natarajan tested positive for COVID-19 at a scheduled RT-PCR test. The player has isolated himself from the rest of the squad. He is currently asymptomatic,” a BCCI release stated.

    “The rest of the contingent including the close contacts underwent RT-PCR tests at 5 am local time this morning and the test reports are negative. As a result, tonight’s game between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals will go ahead at the Dubai International Stadium, Dubai,” it further stated.

    The close contacts identified by the medical team also include Vijay Kumar(Team Manager), Shyam Sundar J (Physiotherapist), Anjana Vannan (Doctor), Tushar Khedkar (Logistics Manager), and Periyasamy Ganesan (Net Bowler).

    The IPL resumed here on Sunday after it had to be halted in May due to multiple COVID cases in its bio-bubble when the event was being staged in India.

  • Lucknow’s KGMU to conduct screening of various departments after 30 doctors test positive for COVID-19

    LUCKNOW: The King George Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow has decided to conduct screening of various departments after 30 doctors tested positive for COVID-19.

    “In the wake of rising COVID-19 cases, KGMU administration has decided to conduct screening of various departments. On April 7, more than 30 doctors had tested positive here and screenings are being done since then,” said Sudhir Singh, spokesperson of KGMU, Lucknow.

    Those who had tested positive will be tested again so that it can be known that the earlier report was not false, he said.

    He further said that on April 6, the Chancellor of KGMU and the vice-chancellor have tested positive for COVID-19 even after receiving both shots of the coronavirus vaccine.

    “The KGMU administration is very serious about controlling the spread of infection. Screening has also been also in the view of rising infection. The administration has made every possible effort to stop the transition to the university at the initial stage,” he added.

    A night curfew has been imposed in Uttar Pradesh’s capital Lucknow, Kanpur, and Varanasi with effect from Thursday night.

    Meanwhile, as per the Union health ministry, there are currently 31,987 active cases in Uttar Pradesh. So far, 6,04,979 recoveries and 8,964 deaths have been reported. As many as 1,26,789 new COVID-19 cases were reported on Thursday, taking the total number of infections to 1,29,28,574. Currently, there are 9,10,319 active cases in the country.
