  • Fighting Covid: Uttarakhand administers over nine lakh vaccine doses in 10 days

    DEHRADUN: In a span of 10 days, the Uttarakhand government administered more than nine lakh Covid vaccine doses in the state.

    A total of 9,44,518 doses were administered with an average of 94,452 doses per day. Experts are seeing this as a positive sign in the state’s fight against Covid-19.

    “The pace of vaccination has picked up which gives hope that all of adult population will be vaccinated till December. However, availability of vaccine is imperative.” said Anoop Nautiyal, whose Social Development for Communities Foundation has been collating and analysing data since March 2020 when first ever case surfaced.

    Earlier in August, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had announced that vaccination of the entire adult population in the hill state will be completed by the end of this year.

    An average of 64,254 doses per day are needed to achieve complete vaccination of the adult population by December 31, 2021.

    Till August 5, Uttarakhand needed to administer 66,267 doses per day to a achieve target of vaccination for adult population. 

    In July 2021 over 15.07 lakh doses were administered while in June around 14.83 lakh doses were given. 

    According to state government data, a total of 80.50 lakh adult population needs to be vaccinated which will require 1.61 crore doses.

    The hill state has total population of 49,34,219 in age-group of 18-44 years, 27,95,247 in age-group of 45+, 1,28,002 healthcare workers and 1,93,216 front line workers. 

    In total, 80,50,684 people are to be vaccinated in the state with 1,61,01,368 doses. 

    In January 2021 total 31,228 doses were administered followed by 1,31,080 in February 2021, 5,14,516 in March 2021, 13,38,530 in April 2021, 8,33,149 in May 2021, 14,83,185 in June 2021 and 15,06,647 in the month of July 2021.

    The vaccination drive for Covid-19 started on January 16 in Uttarakhand. 

  • Night curfew, other Covid-related curbs in Uttarakhand extended till August 10

    DEHRADUN: Night curfew and other Covid-related curbs in Uttarakhand have been extended for a week till August 10 without any further relaxation despite a fall in positive cases.

    The order issued by Chief Secretary Sukhbir Singh Sindhu late on Monday night said the night curfew will remain in force till 6am on August 10, it said.

    Government and private schools which were opened for classes nine and 10 on Monday have been asked to strictly follow the Covid standard operating procedure.

    Similarly, separate SOPs will be issued for opening ITIs, polytechnics, colleges, and medical and engineering institutes.

    District administrations have been asked to ensure Covid-appropriate behaviour by visitors in popular tourist places since large crowds have been gathering there on weekends.

    Visitors from outside Uttarakhand who have taken the second dose of Covid vaccine at least 15 days ago have been exempted from carrying a negative RT-PCR report.

    However, those who have not received both doses have to carry a negative report with the test conducted not earlier than 72 hours from arrival.

    Migrants returning to their villages from outside the state will have to stay in isolation for seven days before they are allowed to proceed to their homes.

    Gyms, shopping malls, cinema halls, spas, saloons, swimming pools, entertainment parks, theatres and auditoriums can open with 50 per cent occupancy.

    Central and state government offices will open with 100 per cent capacity.

    Offices in the private sector can also open with full capacity but they have been asked to encourage their employees to work from home as much as possible.

  • Covid-19 pandemic shrinks job opportunities in Uttarakhand

    DEHRADUN: According to the data provided by Uttarakhand’s employment office, the state has managed to provide jons to only less than half per cent of people durign the Covid-19 pandemic.

    Minister of Labor and Employment Harak Singh Rawat said, “The Covid pandemic has affected efforts to get opportunities for employment as lesser job fairs were orgazined. Efforts are on to generate more opportunities for the employment.”

    The officials from the state government also added that earlier class 3 and 4 vacancies were filled through the employment office but now those vacancies are being filled by outsourcing to non-government agencies, which are trimming opportunities.

    The pandemic hit the employment drive most in last two years bringing the ration down further.

    In financial year 2019-2020 only 0.34 per cent got jobs with total 2,709 getting jobs against 7,78,077 registering as unemployed.

    Earlier, in year 2018-19 the percentage was 0.68 per cent with 5,678 getting jobs against 8,29,139 registrations.

    In financial year 2017-18 condition were a bit better with 0.84 per cent securing jobs as 7,489 got jobs while 8,91,141 registered themselves as unemployed.

    In year 2016-17 only 0.29 per cent were able to secure jobs as 9,26,308 registered as unemployed while 2,773 got jobs.

    Unemployment in Uttarakhand has increased more than six times in last five years.

    According Center for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE) data, in financial year 2016-17 the unemployment rate in the state stood 1.61 per cent which shot to 10.99 per cent in FY 2020-2021.

    Maximum increase in the unemployment rate was registered during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

    In FY 2017-18 rate was recorded 1.02 per centfollowed by 2.79 per cent in FY 2018-19 which increased to 5.32 per cent in 2019-20.

    Last week, Uttarakhand Migration Commision report submitted to Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat revealed that over 53,000 migrants returned to the state from different parts of the country in second wave of Covid pandemic.

    Total 53,092 migrants have returned to Uttarakhand between April 1 to May 5 2021.

    Highest number of people have returned in Almora with 27.97 per cent followed by Pauri (17.84 per cent), Tehri (12.53 per cent), Udham Singh Nagar (0.66 per cent), Dehradun (0.29 per cent) and Haridwar (0.11 per cent).

    Most of these people belong to hospitality sector who lost their jobs due to restrictions amid raging second wave.

    Atleast 39.4 per cent people belong to the hospitality sector followed by students (12.9 per cent), manual workers (11.1 per cent) and any othes from various fields.

    The state government had asked the commision to make a report to assess the unemployment situation to further address it.
