  • Rajasthan imposes night curfew in 8 cities from Monday; visitors told to carry COVID negative report

    JAIPUR: Amid a surge in COVID-19 cases, the Rajasthan government has decided to impose night curfew in eight cities from 11 pm to 5 am and ordered closure of markets by 10 pm from Monday.

    The government has also made it mandatory for people coming to Rajasthan from other states to carry a COVID-19 negative test report along with them from March 25.

    If passengers do not have the negative test report, they will have to stay in quarantine for 15 days, according to an official statement.

    Passengers will also be examined at airports, bus stands and railway stations.

    The decisions were taken in a review meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

    The night curfew will be imposed in Ajmer, Bhilwara, Jaipur, Jodhpur, Kota, Udaipur, Sagwada (Dungarpur) and Kushalgarh (Banswara) from 11 pm to 5 am.

    The night curfew will not be applicable to those factories which have continuous production and have a system of night shifts.

    Also IT companies, restaurants, medical shops, offices-related to essential and emergency services, wedding ceremonies, medical institutes, bus stands, railway stations and airports will be exempted from the night curfew.

    A total of 476 fresh COVID-19 cases were reported in Rajasthan on Sunday, while two more people succumbed to the disease.

    Of the new cases, a maximum of 86 cases were reported from Jaipur, among others.

    At present, there are 3,585 active cases in the state.

    The chief minister directed officials for strict implementation of coronavirus-related protocols and to allow a limited number of people in ceremonies and programmes.

    In the review meeting, the chief minister said COVID-19 cases are increasing rapidly in many countries of the world as well as in many states of India.

    In Rajasthan also, the daily count has suddenly increased in the last few days.

    In such a situation, it is necessary to take some steps to save the lives of people from the second wave of COVID-19, the statement quoting Gehlot said.

    The government has made RT-PCR negative report (not older than 72 hours) mandatory for all passengers coming to Rajasthan from March 25.

    All district collectors have also been asked to restart the institutional quarantine facilities in their districts.

    The system of mini-containment zones will be implemented again, according to the statement.

    “Wherever there are more than five positive cases, that cluster or apartment will be declared as a contention zone,” it said.

    Primary schools will remain closed till further orders.

    In the classes above primary and in colleges, educational activities will be conducted with the COVID-19 protocol.

    Only with the written consent of parents, children will be able to come to educational institutions.

    Not more than 50 per cent of the students will be present in the class at a time.

    In cities with more than one lakh population, a maximum of 200 people will be allowed in public events at open spaces, according to the statement.

    The chief minister appealed to the people to avoid going to crowded places during festivals.

  • Maharashtra sees 15,602 new COVID-19 cases, 88 deaths

    MUMBAI: Maharashtra on Saturday recorded 15,602 fresh COVID-19 cases and 88 deaths, taking the tally to 22,97,793 and the toll to 52,811, the state Health department said.

    Of these 88 fatalities, 40 occurred in the last 48 hours and 21 in the last week.

    Rest 27 deaths had occurred in the period preceding the last week, it said.

    With 7,461 patients getting discharged from hospitals during the day, the count of recoveries in Maharashtra rose to 21,25,211.

    Maharashtra is now left with 1,18,525 active cases, it said.

    At 1,828, Nagpur city recorded the highest number of fresh COVID-19 cases in the state, followed by 1,709 in Mumbai and 1,667 in Pune city.

    Mumbai’s COVID-19 tally increased to 3,41,999 while five more fatalities took the toll to 11,528, the department said.

    Among various divisions in Maharashtra, Pune division comprising civic bodies of Pune, Pimpri Chinchwad as well as districts such as Pune, Solapur and Satara, reported the highest number of 3,365 infections, the department said.

    The overall number of cases in the Pune division stood at 5,56,429 and death toll at 11,845.

    Mumbai division reported 3,198 new cases and 17 fatalities, taking the cumulative caseload to 7,56,184 and the death toll to 19,949, the department said.

    Nashik division’s total case tally stood at 3,14,975 and the death toll at 5,369.

    Kolhapur division has reported 1,20,980 cases and 4,087 deaths until now, while Aurangabad division’s case tally is 89,527 and the death count is 2,094, it said.

    Latur division has so far reported 91,512 cases and 2,559 fatalities.

    Akola division has reported 1,16,438 cases while 1,905 people have succumbed to the COVID-19 disease until now.

    Nagpur division has so far reported 2,51,602 infections and 4,912 fatalities.

    With 97,918 new tests, Maharashtra has so far tested 1,74,08,504 samples for coronavirus.

    There are 5,70,695 people in home quarantine while 5,031 are in institutional quarantine across the state.

    Maharashtra’s COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases 22,97,793, new cases 15,602, death toll 52,811, discharged 21,25,211, active cases 1,18,525, people tested so far 1,74,08,504.

  • West Bengal reports 241 new COVID-19 cases, 2 fresh deaths

    KOLKATA: West Bengal’s COVID-19 tally rose to 5,77,267 as 241 more people tested positive for the infection while two fresh fatalities pushed the death toll to 10,283, the health department said on Wednesday.

    The two deaths were due to the comorbidities where COVID-19 was incidental, it said.

    The state now has 3,127 active COVID-19 cases, while 5,63,857 people have recovered from the disease.

    The COVID-19 recovery rate in the state is 97.68 per cent.

    The state has so far tested 87,48,775 samples for COVID-19 including 18,272 samples in the last 24 hours, it said.

    Meanwhile, 1,44,322 people received the COVID-19 vaccine on Wednesday, the health department added.

  • With 13,000-plus new coronavirus cases, Maharashtra records highest spike this year

    MUMBAI: Maharashtra on Wednesday recorded 13,659 new coronavirus cases, the highest one-day spike this year, which took the state’s caseload to 22,52,057, a health official.

    With 54 fatalities, the death toll stood at 52,610, he said.

    On October 8 the state had reported 13,395 cases after which the number of daily cases had declined.

    As many as 9,913 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, taking the total of recoveries to 20,99,207.

    There are 99,008 active cases in the state.

    Mumbai city reported 1,539 cases, Pune city 1,384, Nagpur city 1,513, Nashik city 750, Yavatmal district 403, Aurangabad 560 and Pimpri Chinchwad 590.

    Mumbai’s COVID-19 tally increased to 3,37,134 and five deaths took the fatality count to 11,515.

    The wider Mumbai division reported 2,933 new cases and nine deaths, taking the cumulative caseload to 7,46,993 and death toll to 19,910.

    Nashik division’s case tally stood at 3,06,985 and the death toll at 5,333.

    The number of cases in the Pune division stood at 5,46,396 and death toll at 11,813.

    Kolhapur division has reported 1,20,599 cases and 4,081 deaths till now, while Aurangabad division’s case tally stood at 86,406 and death count at 2,072.

    Latur division has reported 89,577 cases until now and 2,556 fatalities.

    Akola division has reported 1,11,229 cases while 1,878 people have succumbed to the disease until now.

    Nagpur division has reported 2,43,726 infections and 4,877 fatalities so far.

    With 93,219 tests carried out on Wednesday, the state has so far tested 1,71,15,534 samples for coronavirus.

    There are 4,71,187 people in home quarantine while 4,244 are in institutional quarantine.

    Maharashtra’s COVID-19 figures are as follows: Positive cases: 22,52,057, new cases: 13,659, death toll: 52,610, discharged: 20,99,207, active cases: 99,008, people tested so far: 1,71,15,534.

  • 9,927 new coronavirus cases in Maharashtra, 56 deaths

    MUMBAI: Maharashtra on Tuesday reported 9,927 new COVID-19 cases which took the caseload to 22,38,398, while 56 fatalities pushed up the death count to 52,556, said a health official.

    On the other hand, 12,182 patients were discharged from hospitals during the day, taking the tally of recoveries to 20,89,294, he added.

    There are 95,322 active cases in the state now.

    After several days, the number of active cases declined a little.

    On Monday, there were 97,637 active cases.

    Pune city reported the highest 1,110 new cases, taking its tally to 1,01,389.

    Mumbai city reported 1,012 new cases taking its tally to 3,35,595, while two deaths took the fatality count to 11,510.

    Mumbai division, which includes surrounding satellite towns, reported 1,940 new cases and 11 deaths.

    It increased the cumulative infection figure in the region to 7,44,060 and death toll to 19,901.

    Nashik division’s COVID-19 tally stood at 3,04,620 with a death count of 5,318.

    The number of cases recorded in the Pune division so far stood at 5,43,514 and deaths at 11,810.

    Kolhapur division has reported 1,20,513 cases and 4,080 deaths till now, while Aurangabad division’s case tally stood at 85,325 and death count at 2,068.

    Latur division has reported 89,124 cases until now and 2,554 fatalities.

    Akola division has recorded 1,09,689 cases while 1,863 people have succumbed to the disease until now.

    Nagpur division has reported 2,41,407 infections and 4,872 fatalities so far.

    With 84,088 tests on Tuesday, the state so far has carried out 1,70,22,315 coronavirus tests.

    As many as 4,57,962 people are in home quarantine while 3,827 are in institutional quarantine.

  • Maharashtra records 8,744 new coronavirus cases, 22 deaths

    MUMBAI: After recording over 10,000 new coronavirus cases for the last three days, Maharashtra on Monday reported a dip as 8,744 new infections came to light.

    The caseload in the state rose to 22,28,471, while the death toll reached 52,500 with 22 fatalities, a health department official said.

    As many as 9,068 persons were discharged from hospitals, taking the total of recoveries to 20,77,112.

    The state now has 97,637 active cases.

    Mumbai city reported 1,014 new cases increasing its tally to 3,34,583.

    With four deaths, the death toll in the country’s financial capital reached 11,508.

    The Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), which includes Mumbai city and satellite towns, reported 1,770 new coronavirus cases, taking the cumulative caseload to 7,42,120 while the fatality count stood at 19,890.

    Nashik division’s COVID-19 tally is 3,02,902 and the death count stands at 5,311.

    The number of cases recorded so far in the Pune division stood at 5,41,223 and death toll at 11,798.

    Kolhapur division has reported 1,20,453 cases and 4,079 deaths till now, while Aurangabad division’s case tally stood at 84,786 and death count at 2,066.

    Latur division has reported 88,711 cases until now and 2,553 fatalities.

    Akola division has recorded 1,08,300 cases while 1,847 people have succumbed to the disease until now.

    Nagpur division has recorded 2,39,830 infections and 4,866 fatalities so far, the official informed.

    With 70,941 tests conducted on Monday, the tally of samples tested for coronavirus rose to 1, 69,38,227.

    There are 4,41,702 people in home quarantine while 4,098 are in institutional quarantine.

  • COVID-19: ‘Partial lockdown’ in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad during March 11-April 4

    AURANGABAD: In view of the spike in coronavirus cases, the administration in Maharashtra’s Aurangabad on Sunday decided to impose a “partial lockdown” in the district between March 11 and April 4, as part of which markets, malls and cinema halls shall remain shut during the weekends, officials said.

    The world-famous heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora, and other tourist spots in the district will also remain shut on Saturdays and Sundays, while marriages will not be allowed to be held in function halls during the lockdown period, they said.

    Colleges, schools and training institutes will remain shut, they said.

    The decision to implement this partial lockdown across the district was taken during a meeting of the ‘task force’ comprising Collector Sunil Chavan, Municipal Commissioner Astik Kumar Pandey, Police Commissioner Nikhil Gupta, Superintendent of Police Mokshada Patil and other officials.

    “The partial lockdown in Aurangabad district will come into force from March 11 and will continue till April 4,” collector Chavan told reporters after the meeting.

    “Markets shall remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays, but essential services shall operate on these days. Marriage ceremonies will not be allowed to be held at function halls and banquet halls during this period to avoid crowding. But the facility of registered marriage will be open,” he said.

    Malls and cinema halls will remain shut during the weekends.

    Restaurants and hotels can operate at 50 per cent of their seating capacity till 9 pm everyday and people can order food from them till 11 pm, he added.

    According to Chavan, online education shall continue as colleges, schools, and training institutes shall remain shut and libraries shall operate at 50 per cent of their seating capacity.

    “Political, religious, social meetings, marches will be prohibited during this period. Swimming pools, sports competitions shall not be permitted,” Chavan said.

    The world heritage sites of Ajanta and Ellora along with other tourist spots in the district shall remain closed on Saturdays and Sundays, he said.

    Industries will continue to operate in this period but the the workforce there will be instructed to undergo RT-PCR tests, the collector said.

    The administration has decided to shut Jadhavwadi market in Aurangabad city for seven days from March 11, he said, adding, “If traders from this market commit to follow guidelines we can rethink of this decision later.”

    “Bringing activities to a halt will not be done if partial lockdown works. If cases continue to go up, the option of imposing a stricter lockdown is open,” Chavan said.

    The district had reported 459 coronavirus cases on Friday, which took its overall infection count to 52,103 that day.

    Till Friday night, there were 2,910 active cases in the district, officials said.

  • For fifth day in a row, no new COVID-19 case in Andamans

    PORT BLAIR: Picturesque Andaman and Nicobar Islands have not reported any coronavirus case for the last five days notwithstanding a steady inflow of tourists into the archipelago, health department officials said Sunday.

    The Union Territory has not reported any new COVID-19 case since Tuesday, they said.

    The virus caseload in the archipelago remained at 4,994, with only four active cases, a senior health official said.

    No casaulty due to the virus has been reported for over a month time as the death toll stays at 62.

    One more person was cured of the disease in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of recoveries in the islands to 4,928, the official said.

    The administration is ensuring a strict compliance of COVID protocols by the natives as well as the tourists visiting the place.

    The Andaman and Nicobar administration has conducted 2,21,875 sample tests for COVID-19 so far, and the positivity rate stands at 2.25 per cent, the health official said.

    Inoculation drive is going on at a smooth pace in the islands.

    So far a total of 2,844 beneficiaries including Defence healthcare workers have received COVID-19 vaccine in the union territory of which 1,518 are in South Andaman district, 1,000 in North Andaman district and 326 in Nicobar district, the official said.

    The islands known for its dazzling beauty remained coronavirus-free till the first week of June last year.

    The first case in the union territoy was detected on June 10, 2020.

    Andaman and Nicobar Islands reported its first COVID-19 death of a 49-year-old patient on July 27 last.

    With the islands opening to the tourists and resumption of daily economic activities, the administration has been observing strict COVID protocols to contain spread of the virus.

    Official sources said anybody arriving by flight or reaching by ship from Kolkata or Chennai is mandatorily required to show a negative coronavirus report before the authorities allow them to enter the islands.

    A compulsory coronavirus test is conducted on everybody deboarding a jetty even after inter-islands movemement, officials said.

    Besides, a fine of Rs 2000 is imposed on anybody found moving without face mask in Port Blair and other places in the UT, officials said.

    The civil and police officials have also launched a vigorous awareness drive against COVID-19 as safety protocols against the deadly disease, they said.

    The tourism industry which was hit due to the COVID-19 pandemic has started receiving a large number of visitors as all the major tourist attractions in the archipelago have been opened by the administration.

    Tourists must carry a COVID-19 negative report before they are allowed entry into the islands.

  • India records 11,666 new Covid-19 cases, 123 deaths

    NEW DELHI: India’s COVID-19 tally of cases crossed 1.07 crore with 11,666 new coronavirus infections being reported in a day, while the national recovery rate climbed to 96.94 per cent, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Thursday.

    The total infections have mounted to 1,07,01,193.

    The death toll increased to 1,53,847 with 123 daily new fatalities,  the data updated at 8 am showed.

    The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,03,73,606 pushing the national COVID-19 recovery rate to 96.94 per cent.

    The COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.44 per cent.

    The COVID-19 active cases remained below 2 lakh for the ninth consecutive day.

    There are 1,73,740 active coronavirus infections in the country which comprises 1.62 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

    India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

    It went past  60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on  October 11, crossed 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and surpassed the one-crore mark on December 19.

    According to the ICMR, 19,43,38,773 samples have been tested up to January 27 with 7,25,653 samples being tested on Wednesday.

    The 123 new fatalities include 32 from Maharashtra, 20 from Kerala, 10 from Punjab and 9 from Delhi.

    A total of 1,53,847 deaths have been reported so far in the country including 50,894 from Maharashtra followed by 12,333 from Tamil Nadu, 12,207 from Karnataka, 10,829 from Delhi, 10,139 from West Bengal, 8,636 from Uttar Pradesh and, 7,152 from Andhra Pradesh.

    The health ministry stressed that more than 70 per cent of the deaths occurred due to comorbidities.

    “Our figures are being reconciled with the Indian Council of  Medical Research,” the ministry said on its website, adding that state-wise distribution of figures is subject to further verification and reconciliation.

    NEW DELHI: India’s COVID-19 caseload climbed to 1,05,42,841 on Saturday with 15,158 more people testing positive for the disease while recoveries surged to 1,01,79,715, according to the Union health ministry data.

    The country’s death toll increased to 1,52,093 with 175 more fatalities, the data updated at 8 am showed.

    The number of people who have recuperated from the disease surged to 1,01,79,715, pushing the national COVID-19 recovery rate to 96.56 per cent.

    The country’s COVID-19 case fatality rate stands at 1.44 per cent.

    The COVID-19 active caseload remained below 3 lakh on Saturday.

    There are 2,11,033 active coronavirus infections in the country which constitute 2 per cent of the total caseload, the data showed.

    India’s COVID-19 tally had crossed the 20-lakh mark on August 7, 30 lakh on August 23, 40 lakh on September 5 and 50 lakh on September 16.

    It went past  60 lakh on September 28, 70 lakh on October 11, 80 lakh on October 29, 90 lakh on November 20 and crossed the one crore-mark on December 19.

    According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 18,57,65,491 samples had been tested up to January 15, with 8,03,090 tested on Friday alone.
